Spanish Red Wines
We are actively beginning to specialise in boutique Spanish red wines and are working with some fantastic artisan wineries, importing their handcrafted wines into the UK for our customers. All these wines are tiny production, some just a couple of thousand bottles per year, made by passionate families. They’re generally from family farms handed down from generation to generation, and the wines are still made the same way using traditional methods, with some modern improvements.
These Spanish red wines are low sulphite and great tasting, a very healthy lifestyle choice. They’re also great value for money.
A great artisan Ribera del Duero Tempranillo from vineyards at altitude, hand farmed and handcrafted in tiny quantities. Indigenous yeasts are used and the wine is produced organically using sustainable farming practices. It is aged for six months in barrel.
Lovely cherry flavours, soft and smooth with medium body. Good natural acidity from the altitude bringing all the elements of the wine together in harmony – natural acidity, gentle oak and delicious flavours, all in a very natural style.

It’s a fantastic wine produced at altitude (940 metres) so plenty of fresh acidity. It spent four months in oak.

Bodega Vagal is a tiny artisan winery practising biodynamic methods (pending certification) roughly midway between Madrid and Logrono at altitude. They only make three wines and this Cuvee Joana is excellent. In fact I’d go further and say definitely try a bottle as it is something special. Beautifully made with power, grace and purity.

Tinto de Abel is an organic red made from the Bobal grape, hand harvested and lightly pressed.
Soft and fruity, easy drinking, gentle tannins. Very enjoyable, great wine for BBQs!
Please note Jane had a very mild reaction to the sulphites so if you have a sulphite allergy you may wish to avoid this wine. I enjoyed it and for everybody else it’s a great healthy wine, we are just being extra cautious as we have quite a few customers who suffer from the sulphite allergy, so we haven’t given it a low sulphite rating (despite it being low compared to mainstream wines!

Soft and fruity, easy drinking, gentle tannins. Very enjoyable, great wine for BBQs!

The grapes are handpicked into small trays, then handsorted at the winery before being fermented in 500 litre oak barrels. The juice is then transferred to 225 litr litre French oak to undergo malolactic fermentation, then it is further aged in barrel for 20 months.

Deep purple in colour with big legs. Soft, round and full in the mouth with black fruit flavours and noticeable oak, with a long dry finish.

The wine is made by expert Galician winemaker Luis Buitrón, vice-president of the Spanish Federation of Winemakers and president of the Association of Oenologists of Galicia. Highly recommended.
