Low Sulphite Wine

Here we are lisitng some genuine artisan wines made properly with minimal use of additives, which don't fall within our categories of "organic, biodynamic or sulphite free". They are handmade on a very small scale by small family wineries combining traditional techniques with modern advancements.

Many of them farm organically or biodynamically although don't believe in having to pay annual fees to be certified as such. They don't see any reason why they should be charged extra for making wines as they've always been made.

These wines are very low in sulphites and any of the other 80+ chemicals commonly found in big brand factory produced wines. Many are fermented with the grapes' own natural yeast, and many have only a light filtering, some have none at all so all the goodness and natural anti oxidants are left in the wine.

They are a very healthy lifestyle choice, and of course when buying these wines you will also be helping small dedicated winemakers, as without customers they would not be able to continue making these fantastic wines..

  1. Grangehurst Pinotage 2008

Both 06 and 07 were awarded 4.5 Stars Platter and we expect the same for this 2008

Grangehurst Pinotage is fabulous - one of the best Pinotages on the market. All Grangehurst red wines are very good indeed. Jeremy has a real passion for Pinotage and is regarded as one of the finest Pinotage producers in South Africa. Rich, full bodied, full flavoured and super smooth with weight on the palate. A long lingering finish. This is excellent wine, and a great introduction to anybody who has not tried Pinotage before, or who has only had a mass produced cheap one, as they can put you off Pinotage for life (tasting like burnt rubber). This is a different animal altogether being a fabulous wine!

  3. Herederos 1808 Viura D.O.C. Rioja

The Martinez family began producing wines in the beautiful town of Laguardia back in the 16th century. Today they are still there making these handcrafted wines in tiny quantities. Their total production is just 40,000 bottles per year. They practice sustainable methods, farm biodynamically and always ferment the grapes with their own natural yeasts. They produce some delicious outstanding wines.

The grapes were all hand picked from forty year old vines. Very pale gold in colour. Hold your glass up to the light and you will see this wine has wonderful clarity. On the nose there's an array of citrus fruits and some delicate perfume. On the palate it has good weight with delicate elegant flavours. Fresh and complex, it very quickly grows on you! We loved it.

Rainbow's End is one of my favourite wineries, and this Chenin Blanc is excellent.

Bright and clear in the glass. Big round and full on the palate with lovely flavours. Plenty of body and a long lingering finish. This Chenin Blanc is low in additives, made properly with passion and expertise. It's a long way from the mass produced Chenins found in the UK. Bags of flavour, full and mouthfilling yet clean and fresh on the finish. This is very good wine and I'd heartily recommend it, particularly for any Chardonnay fans to try .

This "350" is a limited edition Pinotage from Jeremy at Grangehurst, to celebrate 350 years of winemaking in South Africa (1659-2009).

Jeremy sources his Pinotage grapes from his neighbour Kautzenburg, also on the Heldeberg which is the best site for red grapes in Stellenbosch due to a combination of altitude and the cooling breezes off False Bay. Neighbours of note include Ernie Els, Rust en Vrede and Eikendaal, all producing good reds.

The wine was aged for 35 months in French oak and left to fine naturally via gravity. The wine was also bottled by hand via a gravity feed.

  17. Low Sulphite Spain Mixed Wine Taster Case

A mixed case of 6 excellent artisan Spanish wines, all made properly and very low in sulphites.

We import directly from tiny family wineries across northern Spain. Some are established families such as Herederos who have been making excellent wine in Rioja since the 1600s, some are father and son such as Valtonar, and we go even smaller than that with Juan Simon and La Senda both of which are effectively one man wineries making tiny quantities each year.

They have several things in common though - they're all delicious wines, the vineyards are tended by hand, generally organically or better and all the wines are made properly with minimal additives. These are good healthy wines which won't give you a bad head in the morning!

This case includes one bottle each of:

  24. Rainbows End Cabernet Franc Limited Edition 2015

    4.5 Stars Platter

Rainbows End Limited Edition Cabernet Franc 2015 is the latest vintage release of this single clone Cabernet Franc from Anton Malan. His standard blended Cabernet Franc is a beautiful wine and in my opinion one of his best wines, but this Limited Edition is right up there with it. 25. Rainbows End Cabernet Franc Limited Edition 2013

    4.5 Stars Platter

Rainbows End Cabernet Franc Limited Edition is unique in that it is the only South African Cabernet Franc to be produced from a single clone, rather than a blend of different clones. Is it better than Anton's blended Cabernet Franc? That is a matter of personal opinion. I prefer the blended version as it is softer with more red fruit. The Limited Edition Cabernet Franc is a little greener and tighter at first. It will be very interesting to see how the two compare with a little bottle age.

Clearly the Platter team rate this wine highly.

Many of the best and most famous South African red wines fetch a real premium, so for Anton at Rainbows End being a relative newcomer, he has introduced his wines at affodable prices.
