Sensational Wines

These are ideal gifts of course! Exclusive high quality wines make a great present. Many of these wines are exclusive to us in the UK

We have a lot of exceptional wines as we cherry pick the very best wines we discover, and the whole ethos of our business is about quality first.

We have far too many to list on one page though so please read through the various countries in the menu on the left of this page to find wines to suit your tastes. And please be open minded to new countries and regions, and new grape varieties as well, as there is a great deal to discover.

We now specialise in wines from Argentina and South Africa as they are producing truly world class wines, at very reasonable prices compared to old world equivalents. Cheap factory produced wines from both these countries have damaged their respective reputations in the UK, but taste their best hand made wines and you'll be amazed at the quality....and quickly converted.

We've got some very good wines from Italy too, from some of the country's top producers like Zenato, La Scolca, Santa Margherita and St Michael Eppan. We also have a small selection of excellent boutique wines from various regions in Spain.

We've put together an initial selection for you below, but there are many more on our site. So please read through the site at your leisure to discover some of the best wines available anywhere in the UK.

  1. Matias Michelini SuperUco

This is the top wine from Matias Michelini, one of four brothers pioneering true biodynamic winemaking in Gualtallary, Argentina.

The winery is simply amazing, a tiny place built in an octagon housing concrete eggs and fudres (extra large wooden barrels). There is no stainless stell whatsoever as they believe in using only natural resources for their wines.

This wine is superb. More details to follow.

  3. Santa Margherita Chiaretto DOC Stilrose

Santa Margherita Chiaretto Stilrose is a superb rose for the discerning wine drinker. Pale salmon pink in colour, full and round in the mouth with complex concentrated flavours. Gentle acidity cleanses the palate on the long finish. This wine is the Italian equivalent to good Cotes de Provence, although this is comparatively low in sulphites too (which is very difficult to find in France). This is the Italian "Whispering Angel".

  4. Santa Margherita Spumante Rosato VS Brut

Santa Margherita tell me this wine is basically the same as their other rose spumante, although it is from a different cuvee/vintage. This one with the new presentation is set to replace the more traditional bottle.

However the wines are different with this being a bit paler in a lighter fresher style, doubtless because the older one has a few months more bottle age. We tasted them back to back at Carlo's where they both went down very well. The quality of both is excellent, opt for this if you prefer the lighter style, opt for the other if you prefer more concentration of flavour. They are both worthy replacements for the limited edition "52" which has just about finished.

  5. Grangehurst Pinotage 2008

Both 06 and 07 were awarded 4.5 Stars Platter and we expect the same for this 2008

Grangehurst Pinotage is fabulous - one of the best Pinotages on the market. All Grangehurst red wines are very good indeed. Jeremy has a real passion for Pinotage and is regarded as one of the finest Pinotage producers in South Africa. Rich, full bodied, full flavoured and super smooth with weight on the palate. A long lingering finish. This is excellent wine, and a great introduction to anybody who has not tried Pinotage before, or who has only had a mass produced cheap one, as they can put you off Pinotage for life (tasting like burnt rubber). This is a different animal altogether being a fabulous wine!

  8. Kaapzicht Steytler Pentagon 2012
    Kaapzicht Steytler Pentagon 2012

    Michaelangelo Awards - Double Gold

    Platter 4.5 Stars

Kaapzicht is an excellent family winery in the Bottelary Hills region of Stellenbosch just up above Jordan, Zevenwacht and DeMorgenzon. The Steytler family have been farming there since 1946. I've visited the farm, and met the family including Yngvild several times although I've still not yet met either Danie (Junior or Senior), who both collaborate to make this particular wine. By all accounts they have a huge passion for quality wines and are very highly thought of by other members of South Africa's elite Cape Winemakers Guild.

Kaapzicht are a big farm but only estate bottle about 30% of their wines as they are passionate about quality and their reputation. These estate wines are pretty good but it's their premium "Steytler" wines that are just in a different league. Danie Jnr is regarded as producer of one of the Cape's best Pinotages, and to add to that he makes two blends - "Vision" and "Pentagon" in the Steytler range which are only produced in exceptional vintages when the grapes are perfect. I had the 2007 vintages of both which were amazing. Both tend to win numerous top awards.

Here we have been very fortunate to get hold of 150 bottles of 2012 Pentagon, a five way Bordeaux Blend. There is no more, the winery have sold out and I doubt there is any in the UK except possibly for the odd bottle on the shelf of a lucky wine merchant somewhere. Don't be fooled if you see it advertised by one of these online "wine marchants" who simply list every wine they can think of then try to buy it in if they get an order for it - they won't have any or be able to get any!

This wine is Danie's pride and joy and is exceptional. Presentation is superb too in a big heavyweight bottle, wrapped in heavy duty paper. Only 6000 bottles produced all individually numbered. This is a classic and will keep for 15 years plus if you want to lay some down. A future classic.

  9. Amarone Sergio Zenato Riserva

Sergio Zenato's personal Riserva Amarone is something special. We've been stocking it for years and enjoyed many great vintages. It is the one wine we turn to when we decide to treat ourselves to a special wine. Sergio Zenato sadly passed away a few years back, so this wine is now made by his son Alberto. It is still extremely limited of course and made to honour the great Sergio Zenato who is one of the all time great exponents of Amarone.

  10. Benegas Lynch Meritage

Benegas Lynch Meritage is quite simply one of Argentina's finest wines. A top Bordeaux blend to rival the very best from France. The first release to reach the UK was the 2004 and on first tasting I immediately bought the lot. I had never tasted anything so good from Argentina. It had great reviews from many critics being likened to a first growth Bordeaux. We have stocked all the successive vintages. The trend in Argentina now is to make their wines more European in style, a little leaner and tighter than previously which I can understand for some of the fruit bomb Malbecs, but it isn't needed here - this is Argentine Bordeaux already!

  11. Amarone Zenato

Amarone Classico Della Valpolicella Zenato to give it it's full name is one of the finest Amarones on the market and Zenato are one of the top Amarone producers. They are members of the elite Amarone producers consortium of course. This Amarone is made by Alberto Zenato who took over the winemaking from his father, the great Sergio Zenato, who sadly passed away a few years back.

In my opinion one of the best and most consistent Amarones on the market. Certainly my favourite out of all the big name Amarones out there. I've been drinking this wine for as long as I can remember and have never had a disappointing vintage. Consistently excellent every year!

  12. Bodegas El Porvenir - Laborum Malbec

El Porvenir Laborum Malbec is in my opinion one of Argentina's very best Malbecs with many awards to it's name. Pure fruit expression with superb balance and length. The natural sugar level of these grapes from the highest quality winery in the world gives this wine incredible sweet fruit on entry. This is tempered by the oak (14 months in new both French and American). It's super smooth, very well balanced with some vanilla coming through on the finish. If you want to see what all the fuss being made about Malbec is all about, this is the wine to go for!

  13. Bodegas El Porvenir - PORVENIR

This is the flagship wine from El Porvenir, a blend of Cabernet, Malbec, Syrah and Tannat. Only 8500 bottles produced. I'm a huge fan of El Porvenir - they're Laborum wines are stunning, and this is even better. It's a big, powerful wine but also structured and refined. El Porvenir is the highest quality winery in the world, and that altitude lends certain characteristics to the wines which make them some of the very best in Argentina. The altitude produces wines with sweet tannins and good body with plenty of acidity which is essential for making top quality balanced wines. The soil also contains greater mineral and salt content which influences the wine's flavour. It's a superb wine, with big fruit flavours, sweet tannins, backbone and structure. It's full in the mouth and wonderfully smooth with great overall balance. Fantastic wine!

Lovely wine. Still young of course, with racy acidity and firm tannins. This wine will certainly reward some cellaring but can be enjoyed now if you give it time to breathe and open up. I recommend decanting, ideally for a couple of hours or more to get the best out of it as it really opens up to become super smooth with flavours of plum and damson. 94 Points - Tim Atkin

    92 Points - Stephen Tanzer

Every vintage of Benmarco Expesivo has been superb in my opinion. Not many people know about it, but it is one of my favourite wines. If you like good Bordeaux you will love this! The current trend in Argentina is to downplay the fruit a bit and make more European style wines, which I personally think is turning your back on one of Argentina's strongest selling points -  the high sugar levels and superb quality grapes derived from the consistent sunshine.

I find the recent vintage of Susana Balbo Brioso for example to be a little too austere for my taste. However this Benmarco Expressivo is still that typical Argentine blockbuster and I would choose this wine over Brioso every time. It's a beauty!

  26. Susana Balbo Nosotros Francis

    92 Points - Deschorado's

Following on from her exceptional Nosotros Malbec, Susana has released two further wines in the Nosotros range. This Francis consists of 50% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Tannat, all hand harvested of course. Individual clusters of grapes were selected then fermented and aged on the lees for 30 days with regular stirring (battonage). The wine underwent full malolactic fermentation and was subsequently aged in first fill French oak barrels for fifteen months.

Nosotros line celebrates the efforts of all the people who work day by day to make this wine. It is considered the winery’s “selection of selections”. It is the blend of the best barrels chosen by Susana and her team after many tasting rounds. “Nosotros” reflects the passion, experience and spirit of each of the members of this big family that is Dominio del Plata.

It was at the Argentine Ambassador's residence in London at a big tasting where we tasted around 100 different Argentine wines. This Nosotros was head and shoulders above every other wine there. I was fortunate to get hold of some stock and have been stocking it ever since. Very possibly the finest wine to come out of Argentina.

94 Points - The Wine Advocate

A collaboration between Bodega Tapiz and Jean Claude Berrouet, winemaker at Chateau Petrus for 25 years (1982 -2007). Jean Claude is regarded as one of the finest winemakers the world has ever known, and a world leader with Merlot. Under his direction Chateau Petrus became one of the most expensive and sought after wines in the world.

It comes as no surprise then to find this blend is heavily dominated by Merlot. I've copied the Tapiz wine information into the further information page. I tasted it at Barrulo and was really impressed. This is a stunning wine, very silky and elegant. The grapes are sourced from three small Pinot Noir vineyards at Ca del Bosco's Belvedere estate at 460 metres altitude just south of Lake Iseo. The grapes were picked by hand on September 2nd 2008. Then bunches were hand selected. They are extremely careful at pressing to extract only the clear juice and no pulp, so in fact they only get 50% or less from each grape! The wine is then fermented and matured in small oak casks for 5 months before a short period in steel tanks. Then the blend of the three vineyard wines is made and subsequently aged on the lees for a further eight years and three  months!

  42. Franciacorta Ca del Bosco Dosage Zero 2013

Franciacorta Ca del Bosco Dosage Zero 2013 Vintage Collection.

This is a blend of 65% Chardonnay, 13% Pinot Bianco and 22% Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) from a selection of 25 small vineyards all owned by Ca del Bosco. The vines are all low yielding, harvested by hand with individual bunches selected for this wine. After a unique washing procedure the grapes are vinified and matured in small oak casks for five months, The wine is then blended and aged on the lees for 48 months. There is then a special disgorgement process in an oxygen free zone, which means Ca Del Bosco don't need to add sulphites at this stage so it is a low sulphite wine. As the name suggests there is no "dosage", the process of adding a little sugar, so this wine is bone dry.

  43. Franciacorta Ca del Bosco Prestige Cuvee Brut Rose DOCG

Franciacorta Ca del Bosco Prestige Cuvee Brut Rose is a stunning sparkling rose wine with extremely limited availability. Ca del Bosco make quite a bit of their excellent white Franciacorta Cuvee Prestige Brut, and it is a beautiful wine. But for this Rose version production is much more limited.

Ca del Bosco is part of the Santa Margherita Group of wineries, all of whom produce high quality wines. The Ca del Bosco still wines are very highly rated and highly sought after, but it is their excelent Franciacorta that they are best known for. Indeed they have helped establish the reputation of Franciacorta as the best region for sparkling wines in Italy - referred to by some as "Italian Champagne".
