Sensational Wines

These are ideal gifts of course! Exclusive high quality wines make a great present. Many of these wines are exclusive to us in the UK

We have a lot of exceptional wines as we cherry pick the very best wines we discover, and the whole ethos of our business is about quality first.

We have far too many to list on one page though so please read through the various countries in the menu on the left of this page to find wines to suit your tastes. And please be open minded to new countries and regions, and new grape varieties as well, as there is a great deal to discover.

We now specialise in wines from Argentina and South Africa as they are producing truly world class wines, at very reasonable prices compared to old world equivalents. Cheap factory produced wines from both these countries have damaged their respective reputations in the UK, but taste their best hand made wines and you'll be amazed at the quality....and quickly converted.

We've got some very good wines from Italy too, from some of the country's top producers like Zenato, La Scolca, Santa Margherita and St Michael Eppan. We also have a small selection of excellent boutique wines from various regions in Spain.

We've put together an initial selection for you below, but there are many more on our site. So please read through the site at your leisure to discover some of the best wines available anywhere in the UK.

  1. Santa Margherita Lugana DOP

Santa Margherita Lugana is a brand new wine and it is superb!

Pale gold in colour with good body and mouthfeel. Big fruit flavours, yet elegant and superbly balanced with a really long finish.

I highly recommend this wine, it really is as good as it looks!

Beautiful to drink on it's own or will pair with almost any food (particularly seafood cooked in butter).

  2. The Fledge & Co Elgin Chardonnay O Velhapi

This is the maiden release for this amazing new wine! A cool climate Chardonnay from a tiny vineyard in Elgin.

Leon produced just 1,320 bottles so we are extremely fortunate to have got a sizeable chunk of it!

Barrel fermented and barrel matured, made in a very Burgundian style for South Africa. This will rival fine Burgundy on quality and blow it away on rarity and price!

Surprisingly light in colour for a barrel fermented Chardonnay. Leon is quite right, this will benefit from some bottle ageing. It is very enjoyable now - I decanted it  to give it some air - but it will keep improving if you can lay it down for a few months (or even years).

It is full flavoured with some body and good mouthfeel. Very fresh and clean yet complex with a long finish.

All the Fledge wines are low sulphite, but we also wanted to mention that all the free SO2 readings were at bottling which will have reduced significantly since, so they will in fact be even lower than stated now.

  3. The Fledge & Co Red Blend

    Platter 4.5 Stars

Hand harvested grapes, traditionally fermented in lagars then aged in oak for 30 months.

This is a beauty. Big and powerful with red and black fruit flavours, wonderfully smooth with well integrated oak and natural acidity. Delicious on it's own or would pair well with red meats or casseroles.

    Highly recommended!

  4. The Fledge & Co Stellenbosch Cabernet

This is the maiden release of this new artisan wine which Leon just launched in Johannesburg at the end of August. He produced just 1880 bottles.

Leon says it is still tight so will benefit from decanting.

Delicious! Deep ruby opaque. Black fruit initially with some lighter red fruit toward the finish and integrated but noticeable oak. Good weight on the palate and super smooth. I decanted it to give it some air but I reckon it'd be a great wine to savour throughout an evening from freshly opened to fully aerated. Ideal in front of a log fire!

  5. Santa Margherita Chiaretto DOC Stilrose

    James Suckling 90 Points

Santa Margherita Chiaretto Stilrose is a superb rose for the discerning wine drinker. Pale salmon pink in colour, full and round in the mouth with complex concentrated flavours. Gentle acidity cleanses the palate on the long finish. This wine is the Italian equivalent to good Cotes de Provence, although this is comparatively low in sulphites too (which is very difficult to find in France). This is the Italian "Whispering Angel".

  6. Santa Margherita Spumante Rosato VS Brut

Santa Margherita tell me this wine is basically the same as their other rose spumante, although it is from a different cuvee/vintage. This one with the new presentation is set to replace the more traditional bottle.

However the wines are different with this being a bit paler in a lighter fresher style, doubtless because the older one has a few months more bottle age. We tasted them back to back at Carlo's where they both went down very well. The quality of both is excellent, opt for this if you prefer the lighter style, opt for the other if you prefer more concentration of flavour. They are both worthy replacements for the limited edition "52" which has just about finished.

  10. Atamisque Assemblage

Atamisque Assemblage is a superb Bordeaux blend from Tupungato in the Uco Valley in Mendoza. This is the flagship wine of Bodega Atamisque and consists of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot

The winery was designed on a gravity system to avoid the use of pumps. The grapes from the low yielding vines were hand harvested into small boxes to avoid damage then underwent a rigorous selection at the winery. The wine was subsequently aged for 14 months in new French oak. It's a full flavoured wine with power and elegance combined, very smooth with a very long finish.

Sergio Zenato's personal Riserva Amarone is something special. We've been stocking it for years and enjoyed many great vintages. It is the one wine we turn to when we decide to treat ourselves to a special wine. Sergio Zenato sadly passed away a few years back, so this wine is now made by his son Alberto. It is still extremely limited of course and made to honour the great Sergio Zenato who is one of the all time great exponents of Amarone.

Only one bottle left which is 2013 vintage. We are unable to get more at present due to obstruction in the supply chain from the effects of the pandemic.

  13. Benegas Lynch Meritage

Benegas Lynch Meritage is quite simply one of Argentina's finest wines. A top Bordeaux blend to rival the very best from France. The first release to reach the UK was the 2004 and on first tasting I immediately bought the lot. I had never tasted anything so good from Argentina. It had great reviews from many critics being likened to a first growth Bordeaux. We have stocked all the successive vintages. The trend in Argentina now is to make their wines more European in style, a little leaner and tighter than previously which I can understand for some of the fruit bomb Malbecs, but it isn't needed here - this is Argentine Bordeaux already!

  14. Amarone Zenato

Amarone Classico Della Valpolicella Zenato to give it it's full name is one of the finest Amarones on the market and Zenato are one of the top Amarone producers. They are members of the elite Amarone producers consortium of course. This Amarone is made by Alberto Zenato who took over the winemaking from his father, the great Sergio Zenato, who sadly passed away a few years back.

In my opinion one of the best and most consistent Amarones on the market. Certainly my favourite out of all the big name Amarones out there. I've been drinking this wine for as long as I can remember and have never had a disappointing vintage. Consistently excellent every year!

  15. Bodegas El Porvenir - Laborum Malbec

El Porvenir Laborum Malbec is in my opinion one of Argentina's very best Malbecs with many awards to it's name. Pure fruit expression with superb balance and length. The natural sugar level of these grapes from the highest quality winery in the world gives this wine incredible sweet fruit on entry. This is tempered by the oak (14 months in new both French and American). It's super smooth, very well balanced with some vanilla coming through on the finish. If you want to see what all the fuss being made about Malbec is all about, this is the wine to go for!

  16. Bodegas El Porvenir - PORVENIR

This is the flagship wine from El Porvenir, a blend of Cabernet, Malbec, Syrah and Tannat. Only 8500 bottles produced. I'm a huge fan of El Porvenir - they're Laborum wines are stunning, and this is even better. It's a big, powerful wine but also structured and refined. El Porvenir is the highest quality winery in the world, and that altitude lends certain characteristics to the wines which make them some of the very best in Argentina. The altitude produces wines with sweet tannins and good body with plenty of acidity which is essential for making top quality balanced wines. The soil also contains greater mineral and salt content which influences the wine's flavour. It's a superb wine, with big fruit flavours, sweet tannins, backbone and structure. It's full in the mouth and wonderfully smooth with great overall balance. Fantastic wine!

As well as power and fruit, this wine also has elegance and structure. It's beautifully made - Anton Malan is a superb hands on winemaker.

96 / 100, James Suckling, Argentine Pushes the Limits, March 2018 (2016 vintage)

    90 / 100, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2016 vintage)

Every vintage of Benmarco Expesivo has been superb in my opinion. Not many people know about it, but it is one of my favourite wines. If you like good Bordeaux you will love this! The current trend in Argentina is to downplay the fruit a bit and make more European style wines, which I personally think is turning your back on one of Argentina's strongest selling points -  the high sugar levels and superb quality grapes derived from the consistent sunshine.

I find the recent vintage of Susana Balbo Brioso for example to be a little too austere for my taste. However this Benmarco Expressivo is still that typical Argentine blockbuster and I would choose this wine over Brioso every time. It's a beauty!

  23. Susana Balbo Nosotros Francis

    92 Points - Deschorado's

Following on from her exceptional Nosotros Malbec, Susana has released two further wines in the Nosotros range. This Francis consists of 50% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Tannat, all hand harvested of course. Individual clusters of grapes were selected then fermented and aged on the lees for 30 days with regular stirring (battonage). The wine underwent full malolactic fermentation and was subsequently aged in first fill French oak barrels for fifteen months.

Nosotros line celebrates the efforts of all the people who work day by day to make this wine. It is considered the winery’s “selection of selections”. It is the blend of the best barrels chosen by Susana and her team after many tasting rounds. “Nosotros” reflects the passion, experience and spirit of each of the members of this big family that is Dominio del Plata.

98 points - James Suckling Top 100 Wines of the World - ranked number 36th best wine in the world.

To describe this wine as something special is of course an understatement - it is superb. I first tasted this Nosotros a few years back. It was at the Argentine Ambassador's residence in London at a big tasting where we tasted around 100 different Argentine wines. This Nosotros was head and shoulders above every other wine there. I was fortunate to get hold of some stock and have been stocking it ever since. Very possibly the finest wine to come out of Argentina.

  26. Tapiz Las Notas de Jean Claude

    96 Points & Best Merlot - Descorchados 2017

94 Points & Editors Choice - Wine Enthusiast

94 Points - The Wine Advocate

A collaboration between Bodega Tapiz and Jean Claude Berrouet, winemaker at Chateau Petrus for 25 years (1982 -2007). Jean Claude is regarded as one of the finest winemakers the world has ever known, and a world leader with Merlot. Under his direction Chateau Petrus became one of the most expensive and sought after wines in the world.

It comes as no surprise then to find this blend is heavily dominated by Merlot. I've copied the Tapiz wine information into the further information page. I tasted it at Barrulo and was really impressed. This is a stunning wine, very silky and elegant. It was late on at the show by the time I tasted it so I didn't even attempt to make my own tasting notes by that stage, so be guided by the official ones. The grapes are sourced from three small Pinot Noir vineyards at Ca del Bosco's Belvedere estate at 460 metres altitude just south of Lake Iseo. The grapes were picked by hand on September 2nd 2008. Then bunches were hand selected. They are extremely careful at pressing to extract only the clear juice and no pulp, so in fact they only get 50% or less from each grape! The wine is then fermented and matured in small oak casks for 5 months before a short period in steel tanks. Then the blend of the three vineyard wines is made and subsequently aged on the lees for a further eight years and three  months!
