Sensational Wines

These are ideal gifts of course! Exclusive high quality wines make a great present. Many of these wines are exclusive to us in the UK

We have a lot of exceptional wines as we cherry pick the very best wines we discover, and the whole ethos of our business is about quality first.

We have far too many to list on one page though so please read through the various countries in the menu on the left of this page to find wines to suit your tastes. And please be open minded to new countries and regions, and new grape varieties as well, as there is a great deal to discover.

We now specialise in wines from Argentina and South Africa as they are producing truly world class wines, at very reasonable prices compared to old world equivalents. Cheap factory produced wines from both these countries have damaged their respective reputations in the UK, but taste their best hand made wines and you'll be amazed at the quality....and quickly converted.

We've got some very good wines from Italy too, from some of the country's top producers like Zenato, La Scolca, Santa Margherita and St Michael Eppan. We also have a small selection of excellent boutique wines from various regions in Spain.

We've put together an initial selection for you below, but there are many more on our site. So please read through the site at your leisure to discover some of the best wines available anywhere in the UK.

  1. Benegas Lynch Meritage

Benegas Lynch Meritage is quite simply one of Argentina's finest wines. A top Bordeaux blend to rival the very best from France. The first release to reach the UK was the 2004 and on first tasting I immediately bought the lot. I had never tasted anything so good from Argentina. It had great reviews from many critics being likened to a first growth Bordeaux. We have stocked all the successive vintages. The trend in Argentina now is to make their wines more European in style, a little leaner and tighter than previously which I can understand for some of the fruit bomb Malbecs, but it isn't needed here - this is Argentine Bordeaux already!

  2. Angulo Innocenti Unisono

Angulo Innocenti Unisono is the premium wine from this tiny artisan family winery, and is one of the finest wines from Argentina I have ever tasted.

Huge fruit, super smooth, black and red fruit flavours with vanilla on the finish. Very silky in the mouth with superb balance. I describe this wine as "Argentina in a glass". It is something special and well worth the £30 price tag.

  3. Eagles Nest Shiraz 2010

Eagles Nest Shiraz is in my opinion consistently the best Shiraz from South Africa.

Here we have a very limited supply of the highly sought after 2010 vintage. Du Toit informed me they have had none left at the winery for well over a year. In fact they put the last of it on at the Nederburg Auction for older/rare vintages where it fetched over 900 Rand per bottle (£56 at the historic exchange rate).

We have just 17 bottles remaining.

  4. Amarone Sergio Zenato Riserva

Sergio Zenato's personal Riserva Amarone is something special. We've been stocking it for years and enjoyed many great vintages. It is the one wine we turn to when we decide to treat ourselves to a special wine. Sergio Zenato sadly passed away a few years back, so this wine is now made by his son Alberto. It is still extremely limited of course and made to honour the great Sergio Zenato who is one of the all time great exponents of Amarone.

  5. Kaapzicht Steytler Pentagon 2012
    Kaapzicht Steytler Pentagon 2012

    Michaelangelo Awards - Double Gold

    Platter 4.5 Stars

Kaapzicht is an excellent family winery in the Bottelary Hills region of Stellenbosch just up above Jordan, Zevenwacht and DeMorgenzon. The Steytler family have been farming there since 1946. I've visited the farm, and met the family including Yngvild several times although I've still not yet met either Danie (Junior or Senior), who both collaborate to make this particular wine. By all accounts they have a huge passion for quality wines and are very highly thought of by other members of South Africa's elite Cape Winemakers Guild.

Kaapzicht are a big farm but only estate bottle about 30% of their wines as they are passionate about quality and their reputation. These estate wines are pretty good but it's their premium "Steytler" wines that are just in a different league. Danie Jnr is regarded as producer of one of the Cape's best Pinotages, and to add to that he makes two blends - "Vision" and "Pentagon" in the Steytler range which are only produced in exceptional vintages when the grapes are perfect. I had the 2007 vintages of both which were amazing. Both tend to win numerous top awards.

Here we have been very fortunate to get hold of 150 bottles of 2012 Pentagon, a five way Bordeaux Blend. There is no more, the winery have sold out and I doubt there is any in the UK except possibly for the odd bottle on the shelf of a lucky wine merchant somewhere. Don't be fooled if you see it advertised by one of these online "wine marchants" who simply list every wine they can think of then try to buy it in if they get an order for it - they won't have any or be able to get any!

This wine is Danie's pride and joy and is exceptional. Presentation is superb too in a big heavyweight bottle, wrapped in heavy duty paper. Only 6000 bottles produced all individually numbered. This is a classic and will keep for 15 years plus if you want to lay some down. A future classic.

  6. Amarone Zenato

Amarone Classico Della Valpolicella Zenato to give it it's full name is one of the finest Amarones on the market and Zenato are one of the top Amarone producers. They are members of the elite Amarone producers consortium of course. This Amarone is made by Alberto Zenato who took over the winemaking from his father, the great Sergio Zenato, who sadly passed away a few years back.

In my opinion one of the best and most consistent Amarones on the market. Certainly my favourite out of all the big name Amarones out there. I've been drinking this wine for as long as I can remember and have never had a disappointing vintage. Consistently excellent every year!

  7. Atamisque Assemblage

Atamisque Assemblage is a superb Bordeaux blend from Tupungato in the Uco Valley in Mendoza. This is the flagship wine of Bodega Atamisque and consists of 50% Malbec, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot.

The winery was designed on a gravity system to avoid the use of pumps. The grapes from the low yielding vines were hand harvested into small boxes to avoid damage then underwent a rigorous selection at the winery. The wine was subsequently aged for 14 months in new French oak. It's a full flavoured wine with power and elegance combined, very smooth with a very long finish.

  8. Benegas Lynch Cabernet Franc

My favourite wine from Federico. It's a rarity being a high altitude single vineyard Cabernet Franc from vines dating back well over a hundred years. Presentation is superb too in a super heavyweight bottle, wrapped in paper with wire tied round the neck to hold it in place.

Benegas tasting notes state: "Powerful wine with juicy and ripe tannins. In the mid palate it exhibits a set of layers where the aromas appear and complement the wine, giving it an elegant and very expressive long finish."

  9. Bodegas El Porvenir - Laborum Malbec

El Porvenir Laborum Malbec is in my opinion one of Argentina's very best Malbecs with many awards to it's name. Pure fruit expression with superb balance and length. The natural sugar level of these grapes from the highest quality winery in the world gives this wine incredible sweet fruit on entry. This is tempered by the oak (14 months in new both French and American). It's super smooth, very well balanced with some vanilla coming through on the finish. If you want to see what all the fuss being made about Malbec is all about, this is the wine to go for!

  10. Bodegas El Porvenir - PORVENIR

This is the flagship wine from El Porvenir, a blend of Cabernet, Malbec, Syrah and Tannat. Only 8500 bottles produced. I'm a huge fan of El Porvenir - they're Laborum wines are stunning, and this is even better. It's a big, powerful wine but also structured and refined. El Porvenir is the highest quality winery in the world, and that altitude lends certain characteristics to the wines which make them some of the very best in Argentina. The altitude produces wines with sweet tannins and good body with plenty of acidity which is essential for making top quality balanced wines. The soil also contains greater mineral and salt content which influences the wine's flavour. It's a superb wine, with big fruit flavours, sweet tannins, backbone and structure. It's full in the mouth and wonderfully smooth with great overall balance. Fantastic wine!

Lovely wine. Still young of course, with racy acidity and firm tannins. This wine will certainly reward some cellaring but can be enjoyed now if you give it time to breathe and open up. I recommend decanting, ideally for a couple of hours or more to get the best out of it as it really opens up to become super smooth with flavours of plum and damson. I would partner this with barbequed meats or a roast.

Every vintage of Benmarco Expessivo has been superb in my opinion. Not many people know about it, but it is one of my favourite wines. If you like good Bordeaux you will love this! The current trend in Argentina is to downplay the fruit a bit and make more European style wines, which I personally think is turning your back on one of Argentina's strongest selling points -  the high sugar levels and superb quality grapes derived from the consistent sunshine.

I find the recent vintage of Susana Balbo Brioso for example to be a little too austere for my taste. However this Benmarco Expressivo is still that typical Argentine blockbuster and I would choose this wine over Brioso every time. It's a beauty!

Brioso is Susana Balbo's signature Bordeaux blend consisting of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Malbec, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, all blended then aged for 15 months in new French oak barrels. Susana Balbo is regarded as Argentina's finest female winemaker, and this Brioso is a great wine wot showcase her talents. It's consistently good quality year on year with recent vintages aiming to be more European in style, less fruit driven and more traditional Bordeaux .

La Scolca Black Label Gavi (also known as "Gigi") is regarded as the ultimate Gavi - excepting La Scolca's exclusive extremely limited D'Antan which is Black Label Gavi aged in tanks on the lees for a straight ten years! That is extremely limited and expensive of course but this black label is more affordable and easier to get stock of.

La Scolca Black Label Gavi is highly sought after. Although pale in colour, this is deceptive as it's a big, rich wine packed with flavour and a real weight on the palate. It has a very very long finish.

  41. Grande Provence Sauvignon Blanc

Grande Provence have produced an excellent Sauvignon Blanc here.

    Platter 4.5 Stars

    Gold - Concours Mondial

    Gold - Sommeliers Selection Awards

Beautiful wine! And in my opinion this is the best vintage yet.

The secret to making great Sauvignon Blanc in Franschoek? Use coastal fruit. The fruit for this wine was all sourced from Durbanville and the Coastal Region up above Cape Town where the Atlantic winds create big temperature differences between night and day, which is perfect for cool climate varieties like Sauvignon.

Great fruit with that typical Sauvignon nose. Green fruit yet soft in the mouth with full body - I suspect some lees ageing. Very clean and crisp with a very long lingering finish. This is perhaps the finest SA Sauvignon I have tasted.

  42. Joubert Tradauw Chardonnay

    Platter 4 Stars

This Joubert Tradauw Chardonnay is a beauty. Joubert Tradauw is a superb tiny family winery in the Little Karoo, producing some excellent handcrafted wines in a natural style. Meyer Joubert farms organically (although not certified) and uses minimal additives or manipulation in the cellar. This Chardonnay is superb, as are his red wines.

Barrel fermented and left on the lees for 12 months to add body, weight and complexity. Initial citrus flavours with some vanilla, the oak is tempered and the whole wine has great balance of fruit, oak and natural acidity.

The 32 mg/l free SO2 was at bottling and will have reduced by now. This is very low for an oak matured white. It's a clean wine, very natural and a great choice for healthy drinking.

  45. Sanct Valentin Chardonnay St Michael Eppan DOC Alto Adige

Due Bicchieri - Gambero Rosso '17

Another beautiful wine from St Michael Eppan from their premium Sanct Valentin range. Normally I find Northern Italian chardonnays a little thin although I love the purity and clean feel. This one however is full bodied from being both barrel fermented (50% new, 50% used) and then further barrel aged for 11 months before bottling.

Pale gold in colour. Full of flavour with fruit and vanilla, rich and round with good mouthfeel. Beautifully balanced with integrated acidity and a long luscious finish. Superb.

  47. The Grande Provence Amphora Chenin

Grande Provence have produced a tiny amount of Chenin Blanc fermented in a clay amphora.

    Platter 4.5 Stars

A stunning "natural" wine fermented with it's own native yeasts then left on the lees in the clay amphora for seven months. As a huge fan of natural wines I believe you can really taste the life in this wine! Full bodied with intense flvours and a slightly nutty finish. I pleaded with Suzanne not to let the winemaker add any sulphites at bottling as I felt the wine didn't need it, but they couldn't take the risk, so a very small amount was added. The amounts are very low though so this wine is fine even if you have sulphite allergy.

This wine is beautiful. Big, rich and full bodied. Round on the palate with concentrated flavours and a creamy mouthfeel with a very long finish.

  51. Franciacorta Ca del Bosco Prestige Cuvee Brut Rose DOCG

Franciacorta Ca del Bosco Prestige Cuvee Brut Rose is a stunning sparkling rose wine with extremely limited availability. Ca del Bosco make quite a bit of their excellent white Franciacorta Cuvee Prestige Brut, and it is a beautiful wine. But for this Rose version production is much more limited.

Ca del Bosco is part of the Santa Margherita Group of wineries, all of whom produce high quality wines. The Ca del Bosco still wines are very highly rated and highly sought after, but it is their excelent Franciacorta that they are best known for. Indeed they have helped establish the reputation of Franciacorta as the best region for sparkling wines in Italy - referred to by some as "Italian Champagne".
