Rainbows End Family Reserve 2015
94 Points Tim Atkin
Nominated for 5 Star Platter
91 Points James Suckling
The Family Reserve is the flagship wine from Rainbows End - a superb Bordeaux blend, complex and elegant, really showing how the best South African reds can compete with France and the rest of the world. As well as power and fruit, this wine also has elegance and structure. It's beautifully made - Anton Malan is a superb hands on winemaker.
Rainbows End is one of my very favourite wineries and is a name to watch out for. I expect Anton will go on to achieve great things in the South African wine world.
Rainbows End Family Reserve
"Anton and Francois Malan, direct descendants of the French Huguenot winemaker, Jacques Malan, waited patiently for ten years for their vineyard blocks to age to perfection in order to select the best possible grapes for this artisan creation.
Only the best barrels of each variety were selected, blended and aged for two years in small French oak barrels. A reflection of our Rainbow’s End terroir and one of the best wines our estate has produced to date."
Merlot 39%, Malbec 19%, Cabernet Sauvignon 19%, Petit Verdot 19% & Cabernet Franc 4% - aged in medium toast French oak for 24 months, then a further 18 months in bottle before release. Each bottle is individually numbered and only 10 barrels were produced.
This is a fantastic wine. It is elegant and sophisticated rather than big and powerful, more for the connoisseur and educated palate. Like "The Grande Provence", another excellent example of South African winemakers producing top class European style wines. I recommend you have this wine with food.
