Low Sulphite Wine

Here we are lisitng some genuine artisan wines made properly with minimal use of additives, which don't fall within our categories of "organic, biodynamic or sulphite free". They are handmade on a very small scale by small family wineries combining traditional techniques with modern advancements.

Many of them farm organically or biodynamically although don't believe in having to pay annual fees to be certified as such. They don't see any reason why they should be charged extra for making wines as they've always been made.

These wines are very low in sulphites and any of the other 80+ chemicals commonly found in big brand factory produced wines. Many are fermented with the grapes' own natural yeast, and many have only a light filtering, some have none at all so all the goodness and natural anti oxidants are left in the wine.

They are a very healthy lifestyle choice, and of course when buying these wines you will also be helping small dedicated winemakers, as without customers they would not be able to continue making these fantastic wines..

  2. Malcaracter Roble D.O. Ribera del Duero

This Malcaracter Roble is also a natural wine, farmed organically. The Tempranillo grapes are hand harvested and fermented with their own yeast. The wine is aged in French and American oak for six months then bottled unfiltered. Good fruit with a little spice, well balanced with a nice palate weight, ideal with cheeses or similar fayre. Excellent value.

  3. Tampesta Golan Prieto Picudo D.O Tierra de Leon

This artisan Tampesta Golan is again Prieto Picudo, this time aged in oak for 26 months. It is delicious and natural. Although aged for 26 months in oak it isn't overpowering as some Reservas can be, it is far more balanced and elegant.

The wine is made by expert Galician winemaker Luis Buitrón, vice-president of the Spanish Federation of Winemakers and president of the Association of Oenologists of Galicia. Highly recommended.

This is a library picture of the Roble as there are no professional images available yet as this is a brand new wine. Presentation is very similar though.

  4. Cuvee Joana Bodega Vagal D.O.P Valtiendas

Bodega Vagal is a tiny artisan winery practising biodynamic methods (pending certification) roughly midway between Madrid and Logrono at altitude. They only make two wines and this Cuvee Joana is excellent. In fact I'd go further and say definitely try a bottle as it is something special. Beautifully made with power, grace and purity.

  6. Tampesta Maneki D.O Tierra de Leon

Tampesta  Maneki is again made from the Albarin grape, although aged for longer on the lees to impart complexity and body. There was also a brief spell in oak.

The resultant wine is lovely. Full and round in the mouth with noticeable peach flavours. Very clean and pure which is a rarity when it comes to fuller bodied whites. Highly recommended.

  10. Grangehurst Pinotage 2008

Both 06 and 07 were awarded 4.5 Stars Platter and we expect the same for this 2008

Grangehurst Pinotage is fabulous - one of the best Pinotages on the market. All Grangehurst red wines are very good indeed. Jeremy has a real passion for Pinotage and is regarded as one of the finest Pinotage producers in South Africa. Rich, full bodied, full flavoured and super smooth with weight on the palate. A long lingering finish. This is excellent wine, and a great introduction to anybody who has not tried Pinotage before, or who has only had a mass produced cheap one, as they can put you off Pinotage for life (tasting like burnt rubber). This is a different animal altogether being a fabulous wine!

  11. Herederos Rioja Selecion D'Autor

Herederos 1808 Selecion D'Autor is the top wine from this excellent family winery. More gentle and sophiticated rather than powerful. Only 6 months in oak but then 20 months in bottle so not the heavier vanilla style of Rioja. More purity of fruit with elegance and structure.

Bodegas de Galicia - Gold for 2014 vintage in 2015 and 2016

Just moved onto the 2017 vintage. A fine, elegant Albarino, full and round in the mouth with beautiful delicate flavours. Please note the free SO2 of 33mg/l was at bottling and will have reduced by now so this is a very healthy low sulphite wine.

  13. Herederos 1808 Viura D.O.C. Rioja

The Martinez family began producing wines in the beautiful town of Laguardia back in the 16th century. Today they are still there making these handcrafted wines in tiny quantities. Their total production is just 40,000 bottles per year. They practice sustainable methods, farm biodynamically and always ferment the grapes with their own natural yeasts. They produce some delicious outstanding wines.

The grapes were all hand picked from forty year old vines. Very pale gold in colour. Hold your glass up to the light and you will see this wine has wonderful clarity. On the nose there's an array of citrus fruits and some delicate perfume. On the palate it has good weight with delicate elegant flavours. Fresh and complex, it very quickly grows on you! We loved it.

  14. Herederos Rioja Reserva

Herederos farm biodynamically and inform us that all their wines are low in sulphites (under 30 ppm free SO2 in all of them). Delicious fruit with noticeable vanilla from the oak. Not a big hitter, far more elegance rather than power. Great balance and very smooth, and not over dry on the finish as many Riojas can be.

  16. Grangehurst Nikela

    John Platter 4.5 Stars

Grangehurst Nikela is a blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Pinotage, 23% Shiraz and 8% Merlot, all fermented separately and aged for 33 months in French oak (97% with 3% American). All Grangehurst red wines are extensively aged before release. This Nikela is a special wine, reflecting Jeremy's passion for Pinotage, using it here to produce an exceptional blend. If you tasted it blind you would be hard pressed to identify any Pinotage in there, as it is a complete wine, absolutely beautiful.

  17. Grangehurst Cabernet Merlot

    Platter 4 Stars

Grangehurst Cabernet Merlot is a great aged Bordeaux blend from Jeremy Walker. Jeremy ages all his wines on site at the winery for many years, and typically only releases them once they're at least ten years old! He is the only South African I know of making wines like this. The results are excellent. Big powerful wines, supoer smooth and fully integrated as the blend has had years to settle. Grangehurst wines are quite an experience and highly recommended. This Grangehurst Cabernet Merlot is full bodied and super smooth, drinking beautifully.

  18. Rainbows End Shiraz

Awaing award info but 2012 and 2013 both won SA Novare Terroir Awards - Best Shiraz from Stellenbosch

Rainbows End Shiraz has very quickly set the benchmark for quality Shiraz in Stellenbosch and indeed for South Africa. It's a winning combination of top quality wine at a reasonable price. Many of the best and most famous South African red wines fetch a real premium, so for Anton at Rainbows End being a relative newcomer, he has introduced his wines at affodable prices. Not only has his Shiraz won multiple awards each vintage but so has his Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and his blends. Without doubt Rainbows End is one of the best and best value wineries in Stellenbosch.

  19. Rainbows End Merlot

National Wine Championships - Champion, Double Gold

New 2017 just in!!! We have been waiting for this as it is one of our personal favourites. Always winning awards every year, this is one of the finest Merlots produced in South Africa.

Rainbows End Merlot is regarded by Neil Pendock of the Platter Guide as one of the best in South Africa, and I have to agree. The 2014 was exceptional as was the 2015 and 2016. We have just received stock of the 2017. Rainbows End is one of my favourite wineries and this Merlot is one of my favourite wines. This is well worth trying to see for yourself just how good top quality South African Merlot can be.

  20. Rainbows End Cabernet Sauvignon

National Wine Championships - Champion, Double Gold

    Nominated for Platter 5 Stars

No doubt plenty of other top awards to follow as usual.

Rainbows End Cabernet Sauvignon is a fabulous Cabernet. Rainbows End is one of the finest artisan red wine producers in Stellenbosch, and now also makes some very good Chenin Blanc too. Anton Malan's winemaking is exceptional. He puts in a lot of hard work such as handpicking at dawn and manually punching down of the ferment several times a day, which is richly rewarded when you taste his wines. This Cabernet Sauvignon is excellent - powerful and opulent, with weight on the palate balanced by good acidity and a purity that comes from absolute minimal use of additives.

  21. Rainbows End Cabernet Franc Limited Edition 2015

    4.5 Stars Platter

Rainbows End Limited Edition Cabernet Franc 2015 is the latest vintage release of this single clone Cabernet Franc from Anton Malan. His standard blended Cabernet Franc is a beautiful wine and in my opinion one of his best wines, but this Limited Edition is right up there with it. Slightly leaner with a little more tannin, more European in style.

We have just received fresh stock of the 2016 which has already been awarded:

SA Novare Terroir Awards - Best SA Cabernet Franc in Stellenbosch 2018 - yet again!

    90 Points by Wine Magazine

No doubt there will be plenty more awards to follow as this wine is superb and is listed at some of South Africa's finest restaurants such as La Petit Colombe, Jardine, Shortmarket Club. The previous vintage was awarded:

    4.5 Stars Platter

SA Novare Terroir Awards - Best South African Cabernet Franc in Stellenbosch 2016

This Rainbows End Cabernet Franc is fantastic. Anton makes some of the best red wines in Stellenbosch and it is his Cabernet Franc that he is most proud of, believing his vineyards have the ideal microclimate for this variety. Anton also produces other excellent award winning red wines including blends, straight Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, plus a superb Merlot.

Very pure, medium bodied with red fruit flavours, very smooth and beautifully balanced. Subtle oak ageing for 12 months, then bottled unfiltered to retain all the flavour and natural goodness. Great wine.

  23. Joubert Tradauw R62 Blend

Joubert Tradauw R62 Blend is a beautiful natural Bordeaux blend aged in French oak for 20 months.  Meyer Joubert normally keeps the blend in this wine a closely guarded secret  as it changes each vintage, but he has been open this year that it is Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (36%) and Cabernet Franc (14%), Great wine, very natural in style and low in additives.
