Low Sulphite Wine

Here we are lisitng some genuine artisan wines made properly with minimal use of additives, which don't fall within our categories of "organic, biodynamic or sulphite free". They are handmade on a very small scale by small family wineries combining traditional techniques with modern advancements.

Many of them farm organically or biodynamically although don't believe in having to pay annual fees to be certified as such. They don't see any reason why they should be charged extra for making wines as they've always been made.

These wines are very low in sulphites and any of the other 80+ chemicals commonly found in big brand factory produced wines. Many are fermented with the grapes' own natural yeast, and many have only a light filtering, some have none at all so all the goodness and natural anti oxidants are left in the wine.

They are a very healthy lifestyle choice, and of course when buying these wines you will also be helping small dedicated winemakers, as without customers they would not be able to continue making these fantastic wines..

  1. Grangehurst Daylea Red Blend

    90 Points Winemag.co.za

Grangehurst Daylea red blend 2007 - is a recent release for Jeremy for "everyday drinking". I don't know any other artisan winemaker ageing a wine for nearly ten years before release. It is typical of his style, big opulent, super smooth and thoroughly delicious.

The presentation has been improved and the wine itself is superb and fantastic value.

This artisan Tampesta Prieto Picudo Roble is from the DO Tierra de Leon in North Western Spain. It is a beauty. Not big and powerful, more subtle, soft and smooth with great overall balance. We focus heavily on natural wines that are easy to drink, harmonising with the body and this is one of our best finds this year. 5. Rainbow's End Wooded Chenin Blanc Stellenbosch

Rainbow's End is one of my favourite wineries. This time Anton has aged some of his excellent Chenin Blanc in wood for a few months.

Absolutely delicious! The wood has added some body and good mouthfeel. Ful of flavour yet still clean and fresh on the finish. This is excellent wine and very low sulphite too, so no ill effects or headaches etc.

    Highly recommended.

  6. Tinta Rosa D.O. Toro

Rosa Maria Zarza is one of Toro's most respected winemakers. You may recall we previously listed wines from two wineries where she was the winemaker (Pago de Cubas and Bodega Contadero).

Well here Rosa is making two wines from selected plots in her 50 year old family vineyard. 100% Tempranillo (Tinta de Toro). For this wine the assorted lots were aged in oak for between between four and six months.

Great wine, tasting notes to follow.

  7. Herederos Valcavada Rioja

A fantastic new wine from this superb boutique winery in Rioja.

The wine itself is beautiful. Plenty of body, super smooth and integrated as all Herederos's wines are. Like their other wines it is low in sulphites and additives as they farm biodynamically and use absolute minimal additives or manipulation.

Great value. We predict this will be a big seller.

  8. Rainbows End Mystical Corner

Rainbows End Mystical Corner is a blend this vintage consisting of Shiraz 6%, Malbec 20%, Cabernet Sauvignon 66% and Petit Verdot 8%. It's a great wine as are all Rainbows End wines. Anton is an exceptional winemaker and Rainbows End iis a tiny family winery so they are able to make wines the way they choose rather than to fit a specific commercial market. Hence an unusual blend like this, at a great price which is so high quality it the previous vintage was awarded Michaelangelo Awards highest rank of Double Gold! We await awards info for this vintage just released.

Fantastic once again, in my opinion the best vintage to date. Big, full and round without being too heavy. Black fruit with integrated oak, nice and smooth with red fruits coming through on the finish.

This is an excellent low sulphite red at an affordable price.
