Gran Maestro Appasimento Rosso IGT Puglia
New label for the 2016.
Gran Maestro Appasimento Rosso IGT Puglia for this 2016 vintage is made from 100% Primitivo grapes, pre dried on mats to concentrate the sugars before fermentation in the "Amarone" method.
Gran Maestro is produced by Cantina Dei Colli Berci, a winery in the Veneto region and member of the Veneto Wine Group ( aka Collis), which explains the "appassimento" method being employed as it is native to Veneto. In fact this is the first time I've been made aware of it being used on Puglia fruit.
This is a big co-operative prodcing value for money wines. Production is much larger than we normally go for, so sulphite levels are also higher than we would normally allow on our site. But if you're not bothered by sulphite content or you regularly drink factory produced wines such as big brands or supermarket wine, it is a decent tasty wine at this price.
Soft, smooth, good fruit with sweet tannins.
Gran Maestro Appasimento Rosso IGT Puglia is a good example of Italy producing good red wines at affordable prices. Although the sulphur levels are higher than we would ideally like, for anybody not concerned about sulphur or anybody who normally consumes factory produced wines, this is an opportunity to buy an Amarone style wine at a bargain price.
