Gladstone is a fantastic boutique winery in Wairarapa in the Martinborough region, at the bottom of North Island up in the hills to the east of Wellington. Wairarapa is very possibly the biggest success story in "boutique New Zealand" in the last ten years, as it's soil and microclimate produce outstandlingly concentrated fruit. The wineries here are mainly family affairs producing great wines with real passion and flare.

Christine and David Kernohan - both originally from bonnie Scotland - have been making wine here since 1996. Minimal intervention is the key, letting the fruit do all the talking. Although it is coupled with expert dedicated winemaking of course. They are in conversion to organic, which is straight forward for them as they have always minimised additives and intervention anyway.

This Pinot Noir is from their flagship "Gladstone" range. Cherry fruit, soft and silky with medium body, slightly earthy undertones. A mineral streak with good acidity comes in on the finish.

Presentation is slightly different to the image shown with a gold border on the label.

Gladtone say:

An intense hit of black cherry and Doris plum, with alluring floral and earthy nuances. There is a lovely dark spice component on the nose, liquorice and star anise combining beautifully with the plush juiciness of cherry and plum on the palate. A rich and rounded generous palate, sweet ripe tannins and balanced, elegant length with a silky textural weight of integrated fine tannins. Drink now, or cellar for up to 10 years.

IN THE WINERY

We chilled and crushed the fruit into 1.5 and 2 ton fermentation tanks. As far as possible all clones were vinified separately to give expression to each clones' unique character. We applied a cold soak period of 3-5 days followed by natural yeast fermentation. All batches received a post-soak of between 2-3 weeks. All plunging was done by hand to maintain a soft extraction of tannins. We then pressed off the batches and matured them in French oak barrels (23% new) for 10 months, each with its own balanced oak regime of barrel age and choice of coopers. We carried out a final filtration prior to bottling.

IN THE VINEYARD

The 2013 Pinot Noir is a single vineyard wine with all the grapes grown at our Dakins Road block. The wine is crafted from a range of clones including 5, 6, 114, 115, 667, 777, 10/5 and Abel, adding complexity and nuance to the final blend. The vines were carefully managed to give maximum sun exposure to the fruit for optimum ripeness, and the fruit was hand harvested to ensure gentle handling and top quality fruit
