Eagles Nest Shiraz 2012 75cl
Eagles Nest Shiraz is in my opinion consistently the best Shiraz from South Africa. I've tried several vintages and all have been excellent. The different vintages of Eagles Nest Shiraz have won just about every major award going in the southern hemisphere. This is a stunningly good wine, this 2012 having been awarded:
Michaelangelo - Trophy highest rated wine in show
Platter 2016 - 5 Stars
Veritas 2015 - Double Gold
Decanter 2015 - Gold & 94 Points
Tim Atkin 94 Points
Shiraz Association SA Top 12
Eagles Nest Shiraz 2012
Eagles Nest is a unique vineyard sitting on the steep slopes of Constantia Neck below Cape Town. I know just how steep these slopes are as Du Toit got the landrover stuck and we could only get half way up! It was winter, which is just like a British summer, but this was a serious heavy duty vehicle. The vines here have to be worked by hand as you simply can't get machines up there.
The vineyard has wonderful panoramic 270 views which give it exposure to the sun and cooling winds of both False Bay and the Atlantic. The secret to their superb winemaking is the perfect matching of each varietal to individual plots at varying altitudes and exposure. They've been able to achieve this "thanks" to the estate being ravaged by a serious fire around 2000 - I can't remeber the date exactly. But it forced them to replant the entire estate. The results have been remarkable together with Stuart Botha's expert winemaking. They are South Africa's finest Shiraz producer.
The owner, Peter, is a great guy too. More often found surfing than farming, but a wonderful host and very humble individual.
The wine itself is fantastic of course. Eagles Nest tasting notes state:
"This vintage shows a deep purple colour that is both fresh and lively. On the nose dense aromas of stewed plum and ripe berry fruit with crushed red pepperkernel.A creamy mouth filling tannin, with hints of pepper spice embrace your taste buds and are deliciously dry. Dark berry fruits and warm baking spice enrich the flavour experience, one soon realises this is a wine of complexity and layering. A truly great wine from maturing vineyards, this wine will age gracefully for 15 years from vintage.
