Domaine Viret La Coudee D'Or sulphite free wine
A natural gourmet wine, big and rich. If you like something crisp and pale this isn't for you. This wine contains a slight sediment and has a vaguely pink colour from the skin of one of the grapes. Pair it with good French cheese and charcuterie and enjoy leisurely. Please don't order this wine if you don't like this style as it is exceptionally limited.
AOC Cotes du Rhone. This is a remarkable gourmet wine, made without the addition of any sulphur. It's extremely limited, made in tiny quantities, and is normally reserved by the winery for a handful of their best customers. Philippe has kindly allowed us a very small allocation.
We've been stocking this wine for several years and this is the best vintage yet. Please note though this is a natural wine. It has a slight pink hue and some sediment so if you're used to drinking manipulated whites with introduced yeasts or heavy filtering you're likely to find this wine quite different. This wine is stunning but please only order it if you want something natural and you're prepared for this wine's unique style. It is a real treat to get our hands on some stock and we want this to go out to our regulars who can appreciate it for what it is!
All Philippe's wines are beyond organic, being produced under his trademarked system of "Cosmoculture" which is a blend of organic and biodynamic principles with ancient beliefs about nature derived from as far afield as the Aboriginees and the Native American Indians. This is further coupled with telluric energy as Alain, Philippe's father, built the winery on an ancient Roman site around an underground spring which they believe energises the vineyards and the winery. They have obelisks dotted around the vineyards to suck down energy from the stars too!
It goes much deeper than this as they built the winery on the former Roman site out of the same stone the Romans used (5 tonne blocks of sandstone), in the same method using no mortar. And they designed it to face a certain direction, as had the Romans, which is something to do with "the magic number". Please read their explanation of Cosmoculture on their website, it is fascinating. And I can honestly say Philippe makes wines like nobody else - they are superb, delicious, healthy and energising!
