Cuvee Joana Organic Bodega Vagal D.O.P Valtiendas
Bodega Vagal is a tiny artisan winery practising biodynamic methods (pending certification) roughly midway between Madrid and Logrono at altitude. They only make three wines and this Cuvee Joana is excellent. In fact I'd go further and say definitely try a bottle as it is something special. Beautifully made with power, grace and purity.
This Cuvee Joana is Bodega Vagal's younger wine. Made from 100% Tempranillo, grown at 940 metres in a climate with cold snowy winters and hot dry summers with significant fluctuations between day and night time temperatures. These factors creat great acidity in the grapes as well as concentrated flavours. Add to that that they are farmed biodynamically including significant pruning back to keep the yield to just 4000kg per hectare and you can see they are working with optimum quality grapes.
Hand picked of course then fermented with their own natural yeasts. Aged for nine months in French oak. This wine is something special.
