Boplaas Bobbejaanberg Sauvignon Blanc
Boplaas is a top family winery in Calutzdorp and this "Bobbejaanberg" (meaning baboon mountain) is a top class Sauvignon Blanc. A handmade limited production wine - clearly cool climate, pale in colour with a floral nose. Beautiful flavours, yet subtle and elegant. Great balance and a long finish. This isn't "green fruit Marlborough", it is more sophisticated, more old world. This is seriously good wine.
This is only the third ever vintage of this new cool climate Sauvignon Blanc from the Nel family (first release won Veritas Gold, 2nd release wone Veritas Double Gold and Michaelangelo Double Gold), although they do have a history of producing excellent Sauvignons having been back to back winners of the best Sauvignon Blanc at the South African Young Wine Show in 2009 and 2010.
Bobbejaanberg means "baboon mountain" as this high altitude vineyard is raided by baboons significantly reducing the crop of grapes!
For this vintage the grapes were hand harvested on the 31st March 2014, then soft pressed and only the best free run juice was then cool fermented to produce this excellent wine. Double Gold is usually only awarded to less than half a dozen wines out of 1000+ at a wine competition, so to have been awarded it at both Vitis ViniFere and Michaelangelo in the same year is quite some acheivement! These awards, like the Old Mutual and Veritas, are genuine. I'm somewhat sceptical about other more mainstream awards!
Only 5000 bottles were produced and this wine is only available at Boplaas's tasting rooms. It's not in any retailers or any hotels or restaurants in South Africa. However as we took Rozanne to Carlo's and plied her with Amarone Zenato we've now got some for our customers!

Named after the troop of marauding Baboons (Bobbejane in Afrikaans) which each year decimate the already meagre crop from the windswept vines planted at over 650m in elevation in the shadow of the craggy peaks of the Outenique range in the Upper-Langkloof ward, the Bobbejaanberg is testament to Sauvignon Blanc's fickle terroir specific nature and these vines at the very edge of the Cape's winelands.
Hand harvested at optimal ripeness, in the cool morning hours of 31 March 2014 - a full week earlier than the maiden vintage - and hastily trucked to Boplaas, the Bobbejaanberg Sauvignon was crushed and allowed a period of skin contact prior to a gentle pressing with only the free-run juice cold fermented in stainless steel and allowed a period of lees contact prior to bottling with a very light filtration.
Lime leaf, subtle white peach, lemon grass, sugar snap pea & hints of zingy green chilli, capsicum and green asparagus aromatics are wrapped in a svelte palate with oyster shell minerality, bright acidity and fynbos finish adding to the intrigue. True to this wines cool climate origins, this wine will improve with bottle maturation over the coming few years. A total of 888 cases of the Bobbejaanberg were crafted in this vintage.
