  13. Joubert Tradauw Chardonnay

    Platter 4 Stars

This Joubert Tradauw Chardonnay is a beauty. Joubert Tradauw is a superb tiny family winery in the Little Karoo, producing some excellent handcrafted wines in a natural style. Meyer Joubert farms organically (although not certified) and uses minimal additives or manipulation in the cellar. This Chardonnay is superb, as are his red wines.

Barrel fermented and left on the lees for 12 months to add body, weight and complexity. Initial citrus flavours with some vanilla, the oak is tempered and the whole wine has great balance of fruit, oak and natural acidity.

The 32 mg/l free SO2 was at bottling and will have reduced by now. This is very low for an oak matured white. It's a clean wine, very natural and a great choice for healthy drinking.

Rainbow's End is one of my favourite wineries, and this Chenin Blanc is excellent.

Bright and clear in the glass. Big round and full on the palate with lovely flavours. Plenty of body and a long lingering finish. This Chenin Blanc is low in additives, made properly with passion and expertise. It's a long way from the mass produced Chenins found in the UK. Bags of flavour, full and mouthfilling yet clean and fresh on the finish. This is very good wine and I'd heartily recommend it, particularly for any Chardonnay fans to try .

  16. Grande Provence Angels Tears Red

This Angels Tears Cabernet Merlot from Grande Provence is a superb red wine for the money. Grande Provence is an excellent boutique winery in the stunning Franschoek Valley. The original property dates back to 1694 and occupies a beautiful location right in the middle on the flat, surrounded by vines. It is a magnificent setting and if you are lucky enough to be visiting Cape Town it is well worth a short detour. The secret to the quality of their wines though is that they own some of the finest vineyard sites dotted across the mountains.

Soft, smooth and fruit driven with a hint of oak. This wine is delicious for everyday drinking and superb value at this price.

  19. Herederos 1808 Viura D.O.C. Rioja

The Martinez family began producing wines in the beautiful town of Laguardia back in the 16th century. Today they are still there making these handcrafted wines in tiny quantities. Their total production is just 40,000 bottles per year. They practice sustainable methods, farm biodynamically and always ferment the grapes with their own natural yeasts. They produce some delicious outstanding wines.

The grapes were all hand picked from forty year old vines. Very pale gold in colour. Hold your glass up to the light and you will see this wine has wonderful clarity. On the nose there's an array of citrus fruits and some delicate perfume. On the palate it has good weight with delicate elegant flavours. Fresh and complex, it very quickly grows on you! We loved it.
