Umbria

Umbria lies between Tuscany and Marche in the foothills to the west of the Appenine Hills. It's unique grape is the Sagrantino, which produces an excellent, unusual red.

Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG 2004 Fattoria Colsanto 75cl

14%abv. Previous vintages have won numerous awards in Italy including Gambero Rosso 'Due Bicchieri' Duemilavini - 3 Grappoli. Made from 100% Sagrantino grapes, hand harvested. They then undergo malolactic fermentation for 15 days before being split so 70% is transferred to small wooden barriques and 30% to stainless steel tanks where the wine is stored for 15 months. It is then expertly blended and aged for a further 12 months in bottle prior to release. An unusual nose gives way to a full and spicy palate with superbly balanced acidity and a long finish This is a great food wine, the Umbrian equivalent to a Super Tuscan.
