  Spain

New Award Winning Wines arriving shortly!

Spain has more acreage under vine than any other country but it doesn't produce the most wine. Vines are one of the few hardy plants that can grow on the huge dessert plain of La Mancha and poor quality quaffing wine has been produced for local consumption for decades.

Spain's biggest success is the Tempranillo grape which produces some excellent wines in the well known Rioja and Navarra regions in the fertile foothills of the Pyrenees in the north east. However the Spanish wine industry has undergone something of a revolution in recent years, replanting little known local grape varieties with Cabernet Sauvignon and other well known grapes. The introduction of new technology and modern techniques like temperature controlled fermentation has enabled Spain to finally reach it's potential and the lesser known regions like Catalunya, Aragon and La Mancha are now producing fruit driven reds.

Vina Encineda Valle Mayor Rioja DO Cosecha 2004 75cl

13% abv. The small bodega of Valle Mayor call this wine a 'semi Crianza'. It's a beautiful wine from Rioja Alta made predominantly for the Spanish market. The wood aging has mellowed the fruit flavours to create a delicious , soft wine with vanilla and oak on the finish. It's one of the best Riojas I've tasted. Great presentation and individual bottle numbers. A great bottle of wine.

Emilio Moro 2004 75cl

14.5% abv. Robert Parker 92 Points. DO Ribera del Duero. Truly stunning wine from the producer of the world famous Malleolus. Emilio has named this wine after himself, so it shows the faith he has in it. It's made from the same grape as Malleolus, Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo), it's the same style and alcoholic strength and from the same area. I tasted them both together and actually preferred this one despite it being a quarter of the price! The wine has a beautiful deep colour. It's very big in terms of flavour and alcohol with great balancing acidity. Very smooth with tremendous length. Absolutely superb. It's a delight to see Spain competing again with the best from the rest of the world.

Museum Real Rioja Reserva 2002 75cl

14% abv. A nose of fruit and vanilla. Good fruit on the palate and typically dry on the finish. This wine is relatively light in style for a Reserva and I personally prefer a more full bodied wine. I've featured it, as different people have different tastes, and my effective brother in law, Russ, loved this one. The presentation is excellent. Limited stocks available, please email for availability.

Sonsierra Rioja Tempranillo 2006 75cl

14% abv. 100% Tempranillo from Rioja Alta. Deep ruby red colour. Leave to breathe for twenty minutes and the nose will open up. Strong fruit flavours on the palate with a dry finish. It goes well with red meats and I recently had a bottle with barbequed steak and really enjoyed it. It gets better the longer you can leave it to breathe. Great value Rioja at this price.
