New Award Winning Wines arriving shortly!

Spain has more acreage under vine than any other country but it doesn't produce the most wine. Vines are one of the few hardy plants that can grow on the huge dessert plain of La Mancha and poor quality quaffing wine has been produced for local consumption for decades.\nSpain's biggest success is the Tempranillo grape which produces some excellent wines in the well known Rioja and Navarra regions in the fertile foothills of the Pyrenees in the north east. However the Spanish wine industry has undergone something of a revolution in recent years, replanting little known local grape varieties with Cabernet Sauvignon and other well known grapes. The introduction of new technology and modern techniques like temperature controlled fermentation has enabled Spain to finally reach it's potential and the lesser known regions like Catalunya, Aragon and La Mancha are now producing fruit driven reds.

Callejo 6 Meses DOC Ribera del Duero 2009 75cl

The 2007 received 90 Points from Robert Parker, the 06 got 89.

This is a good wine from a family owned vineyard with 100 hectares of vines at an altitude of 850 metres. Having spent 6 months in barriques it's very soft and smooth with good fruit and a great overall balance making it a very easy drinking wine, lovely with food or on it's own.

Cosme Palacio 1894 Rioja 2007 75cl

New Wave Spanish Wine Awards 2010 - Gold Medal. Decanter - Commended.

Currently available at Harrods at £49.95. We've put it on offer at £28.99

DOC Rioja. This is a brand new premium wine from this prestigious award winning boutique winery, made in tiny quantities, and is available on an allocation only basis of course. My tasting notes from last May say 'excellent wine, exceptionally smooth....' I look forward to tasting it again now it's in stock as I remember it was something special. Bodegas Palacio was founded in 1894 and this wine has been named '1894' as a tribute to that event, as it is the winery's ultimate wine. Michel Rolland has input into the winemaking.

Pascona Tradicio Biodynamic Red 2006 75cl

Reduced for January. Was £14.24, Now Only £11.99 while stocks last!

Premios Mezquita (Spanish National Wine Awards) Bronze Medal

This is a handcrafted, boutique wine, very low in sulphites, produced biodynamically. Virtually everything is done by hand on the 14 hectare vineyard. The grapes from selected old vines, are picked in small 20kg boxes so they actually arrive in the winery within 2 minutes of picking to ensure there's no risk of oxidation starting, eliminating the need to add sodium metabisulphate powder in the vineyard. The grapes are sorted by hand to ensure only the best are selected, then the varieties are fermented separately under temperature control. The wines are then blended and naturally stabilised so all these methods eliminate the need to add sulphur at the various stages of production. The resulting wine is superb. Deep ruby in colour with lovely fruit flavours and some noticeable oak on the finish. It has a smooth, full mouthfeel with well balanced cleansing acidity and a long finish. If you like smooth, fruit driven wines this is a real cracker, and it's very low in sulphur so it's fine for sulphite intolerant people too.

Decanter - Commended (over £10)

D.O. Pla de Bages, Catalonia. The Oller del Mas dynasty stretches back to the 10th century when the castle, which now houses the winery, was built. While the family own a vast vineyard of over 400 hectares, they select the best grapes to produce their two premium red wines named after historical family members. Bernat Oller held important positions in the ecclesiastical heirarchy during the XVth century, and held a PhD in Theology. Virtually everything is done by hand, as this wine is crafted with real pride. The wine is ruby in colour with purple hints. There's big, soft round red fruits on the palate with medium body and a long finish with some vanilla. It's very well balanced with cleansing acidity, lovely to drink on it's own or will pair beautifully with food. It's very good wine.

This is the first release of this wine anywhere. Oscar has very kindly allowed us a small allocation. We wish him luck with his wines, and having tasted them, I'm sure they'll be a great success!

D.O.Rioja Alavesa. This is a superb handcrafted, boutique Rioja from Oscar Robedero. 100% Tempranillo Peludo aged in French oak for 17 months. Deep ruby in colour with rich, full fruit flavours. Very smooth, with good mouthfeel and plenty of body, very well balanced with palate cleansing acidity and a long finish. This wine is soft and elegant, not a big oaky powerful Rioja as in the traditional Reserva or Gran Reserva style. It's a great wine, best enjoyed with food.

Titan del Bendito DOC Toro 2006 75cl

This is a tiny boutique vineyard of only 8 hectares owned by Frenchman Antony Terryn producing some stunning wines. Located in the little known DOC of Toro in North West Spain, he makes his wines from Tinto do Toro, the local variety of Tempranillo.

15% abv, 20 months in oak. Made from low yielding vines of between 50 and 100 years old. Severely limited. Deep opaque purple in colour with viscous legs and a big nose of dark cherry. This is a big wine which needs to breathe. Intense fruit on the palate with noticeable alcohol and acidity, all supremely balanced. Very very long with a concentrated dry finish. Great with food, we had it with steak. Jane absolutely loved it. I thought it was superb too but I tend to go for reds in a slightly less dry style such as Amarone. If you like this style - big powerful dry reds - this is superb!

Vina Encineda Valle Mayor Rioja DO Cosecha 2004 75cl
13% abv. The small bodega of Valle Mayor call this wine a 'semi Crianza'. It's a beautiful wine from Rioja Alta, 100% Tempranillo, made predominantly for the Spanish market, with only 20 000 bottles made each year. The wood aging has mellowed the fruit flavours to create a delicious, soft wine with vanilla and oak on the finish. Great presentation and individual bottle numbers. A great bottle of wine at this price for everyday drinking.

Sonsierra Rioja Tempranillo 75cl
14% abv. 100% Tempranillo from Rioja Alta. Deep ruby red colour. Leave to breathe for twenty minutes and the nose will open up. Strong fruit flavours on the palate with a dry finish. It goes well with red meats and I recently had a bottle with barbequed steak and really enjoyed it. It gets better the longer you can leave it to breathe. Great value Rioja at this price.
