Campania, Puglia & Southern Italy
Perhaps the biggest current sensation in the Italian wine world. Southern Italy has unrivalled heat and sunshine. It also has some fantastic native grape varieties like Negroamaro, Aglianico and Primitivo which thrive in these hot conditions. This has now been combined with modern technology and individual mesoclimates to produce some sensational wines. Together with Sicily, this region is now producing superb fruit driven reds and full flavoured whites, all representing excellent value for money.

Vigna Marziacanale DOC Irpinia 2005 Vinosia 75cl

14% abv. Made from 100% Aglianico by the famous wine making brothers, Mario & Luciano Ercolino. Truly stunning wine. As far as we know only available in the UK through ourselves or Harrods. We took a bottle to our friend's superb Italian restaurant to sample together, to make sure we weren't just being biassed. It was delicious, big powerful fruit balanced by strong alcohol and beautifully smooth tannins. Incredible length. But then, after our first glass, we consumed the rest with food and it was magnificent. I couldn't stop remarking at how the food kept refreshing the flavours. We waited three months for this wine to arrive from Italy and it was well worth it. When it finally arrived it was in bottles weighing 1.1 kg, even more empty than a normal bottle of wine when full! So the Ercolino brothers really value this wine to spend so much on the bottle! We only have a very limited amount available.

Vigna Camarato Falerno del Massico DOC 2001 Villa Matilde 75cl

Gambero Rosso 'Tre Bicchieri' 2008. 14%abv. 80% Aglianico 20% Piedirosso from Campania. After fermentation the wine is aged in Allier oak barriques for 12 months then a further 12 to 18 months in bottle before release. This is a truly sensational wine. The Aglianico grape, while relatively unknown in the Uk, makes some truly fantastic wines. This wine has a deep red colour, with an elegant and intense bouquet. Wonderful big fruit flavours, full and rich, plenty of body with superbly balanced tannin and acidity. This wine is sensational. A 'Super Campanian!'

Primitivo di Salento IGT Cantine due Palme 2005 75cl

IWSC Silver Medal. IWC Bronze Medal. 13.5% abv. Another delicious wine from the 'Heel of Italy', this time from the local Primitivo grape. This wine is bursting with fruit, so much so it can be opened and consumed virtually straight away, without needing to breathe. We enjoyed just drinking it on it's own to begin, but it transformed into something even better when we paired it with food. This is the best Primitivo we've ever tried and is a great introduction to the wines of Salento. Recommended.

Sollione Negroamaro IGT Salento 2006 75cl

13% abv. From the 'heel' of Italy. The hot weather combined with modern techniques is transforming the once 'too hot' Southern Italy into a premier wine producing region. This is a soft and fruity, easy drinking red with vanilla flavours produced from the local grape Negroamaro. Great value and delicious to drink on it's own or equally good with food.
