Campania, Puglia & Southern Italy

Perhaps the biggest current sensation in the Italian wine world. Southern Italy has unrivalled heat and sunshine. It also has some fantastic native grape varieties like Negroamaro, Aglianico and Primitivo which thrive in these hot conditions. This has now been combined with modern technology and individual mesoclimates to produce some sensational wines. Together with Sicily, this region is now producing superb fruit driven reds and full flavoured whites, all representing excellent value for money.

Vigna Marziacanale DOC Irpinia 2005 Vinosia 75cl

Currently £26.50 at Harrods

14% abv. Made from 100% Aglianico by the famous wine making brothers, Mario & Luciano Ercolino. Truly stunning wine. As far as we know only available in the UK through ourselves or Harrods. We took a bottle to our friend's superb Italian restaurant to sample together, to make sure we weren't just being biassed. It was delicious, big powerful fruit balanced by strong alcohol and beautifully smooth tannins. Incredible length. But then, after our first glass, we consumed the rest with food and it was magnificent. I couldn't stop remarking at how the food kept refreshing the flavours. We waited three months for this wine to arrive from Italy and it was well worth it. When it finally arrived it was in bottles weighing 1.1 kg, even more empty than a normal bottle of wine when full! So the Ercolino brothers really value this wine to spend so much on the bottle! We only have a very limited amount available.

Vigna Camarato Falerno del Massico DOC 2003 Villa Matilde 75cl

IWSC Bronze Medal. 14%abv. 80% Aglianico 20% Piedirosso from Campania. After fermentation the wine is aged in Allier oak barriques for 12 months then a further 12 to 18 months in bottle before release. This is a truly sensational wine. The Aglianico grape, while relatively unknown in the Uk, makes some truly fantastic wines. This wine has a deep red colour, with an elegant and intense bouquet. Wonderful big fruit flavours, full and rich, plenty of body with superbly balanced tannin and acidity. This wine is sensational. A 'Super Campanian!'

Primitivo di Salento IGT Cantine due Palme 2009 75cl

IWSC Gold Medal for the 2007. IWSC Silver Medal & IWC Bronze Medal for the 2006. 13.5% abv. Another delicious wine from the 'Heel of Italy', this time from the local Primitivo grape. This wine is bursting with fruit, so much so it can be opened and consumed virtually straight away, without needing to breathe. We enjoyed just drinking it on it's own to begin, but it transformed into something even better when we paired it with food. This is the best Primitivo we've ever tried and is a great introduction to the wines of Salento. Be warned though, most Southern Italy reds tend to be sweet in style due to the high sugar content of the grapes caused by the intense sunshine. If you prefer a more savoury style this may not be for you! Recommended.

Megale Negroamaro Barrique Salento IGT 2010 75cl

Luca Maroni Italian Wine Guide 87 Points for the 2008, Luigi Veronelli 2 Stars (his 2nd highest rating)

14%abv. This is a barrique aged Negroamaro from Feudo di Santa Croce, which is part of the Tinazzi wine family, famous in particular for their Amarone in Verona but also with vineyards in other parts of Italy. That would help explain why this wine is so good. Plenty of ripe fruit on the palate with noticeable oak. Very easy drinking, smooth with sweet tannins. This is a great bottle of wine to enjoy with food, suited to anything from tomato based dishes to grilled red meats. Great value.

Selvarossa Riserva DOC Salice Salento Cantine due Palme 2007 75cl

Gambero Rosso - Tre Bicchieri for a remarkable four successive vintages, 04,05,06 and this 07. Cantine due Palme was also recognised as Italy's Best Cantina at Vinitaly 2009.

14% abv. A blend of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera, hand picked. After the wine is fermented it is blended then aged in French oak for nine months with a further four months in bottle prior to release. It's a big, soft and warming red. Smooth, sweet tannins, bags of fruit and a very long finish. Great with food. If you enjoy the sweeter Southern Italian reds you'll love this. It's one of the region's very best wines. It was also listed in Gentleman's Magazine in the top 100 Italian wines.
