Sicily

Sicily has the single greatest expanse of vineyard in all Italy and wine has been made there since antiquity. Sicily's best reds are ranked amongst the very best in all Italy. The vast majority of wine is made by cooperatives, but now small independent producers with prime vineyards at altitude are producing some stunning wines.

Sagana IGT Sicilia Cusumano 2006 75cl

'Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri 2008. 88 Points Wine Spectator' 14%abv. Made from 100% Nero d'Avola grapes, vinified in 20hl wooden casks, followed by malolactic fermentation in oak barrels where the wine remains for six months. Intense floral nose, medium bodied, plenty of fruit and a dry finish. This wine is fantastic and has won 'Tre Bicchieri' for the last four consecutive years, as well as a whole host of other awards including Duemilavini - 5 Grappolis, Decanter - 3 stars, Winespectator 87 points. This wine is elegant and subtle in style and would appeal to fans of good Burgundy. Sicilian wine has improved dramatically in recent years, combining modern techniques with abundant sunshine and decades of expertise.

Noa IGT Sicilia Cusumano 2006 75cl

Gambero Rosso 'Tre Bicchieri' 2008. IWSC Silver - Best in Class. 14%abv. The big brother to Sagana. This wine has also won a whole host of awards for previous vintages including Tre Bicchieri in 2000, 03, 04, IWSC - Gold 2001, IWC - Silver 2001, Decanter - 4 stars 2002, Winespectator 90 points 2002, Duelilavini - 5 Grappolis 2004, 02 to name only a few. 14%abv. 40% Nero d'Avola 30% Merlot 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are hand picked from separate vineyards, vinified and matured separately in small French oak casks prior to blending. The blend alters slightly each year to ensure they get the best out of the resulting wine. This is the flagship wine of the Cusumano estate and is absolutely beautiful. Fabulous flavours, full in the mouth with great acidity so it pairs beautifully with food. Simply magnificent.

Tenuta Rapitala IGT Sicilia Nero D'Avola 2007 75cl

13.5% abv. 100% Nero D'Avola grapes from low yielding vines from selected parts of the Tenuta Rapitala vineyard at 400 metres above sea level. The grape must is carefully vinified, partly in wood, then aged for twelve months before bottling. The resulting wine is full flavoured and well balanced, making it ideal to accompany food.

Please note this wine is unfiltered and will contain some natural sediment of grape particles. These will be found on the base of the cork and at the bottom of the bottle. Please pour carefully, decant or use the excellent Vinturi if you don't want to get sediment in your glass. It's completely harmless and is a natural biproduct of wine production. Many producers choose to bottle their wine unfiltered as they believe filtering can take away some of the natural flavour. I've just drunk a bottle after a customer reported the sediment as a fault. It's not a fault of course and the wine was lovely, but I can understand some people may be put off with sediment in their wine if they're used to drinking factory produced, large volume wines.
