Sardinia

85% of Sardinia is mountainous which is ideal terrain for grape cultivation. Conversely, the more the vine has to struggle, the better the quality of the grapes. Unfortunately the Sardinian cooperative winemakers took the easy option of planting on the plains, where they produced masses of unexciting wines. That however has now changed to a degree. There are some fantastic reds being made by individual producers up in the hills especially from the native Cannonau grape. If you want to sample the best Sardinia has to offer, it's very important to look out on the label for a reputable producer and avoid the cooperatives.

Turriga VdT Argiolas 2004 75cl

Gambero Rosso 'Tre Bicchieri' IWC Silver Medal for Best in Class, Wine Enthusiast 91 Points 14%abv, Sardinia. What a wine! One of only 9 wines out of a staggering 1613 to have been awarded 'excellent' status by all of the five main Italian wine guides. Just about every vintage from 1992 to 2002 has won 'Tre Bicchieri'. as well as a host of other awards including Duemilavini 5 Grappoli, Concours Bruxelles - Gold, Decanter - Bronze. The list goes on and on. Made from traditional Sardinian grapes Cannonau, Carignano & Bovale Sardo. This wine is big and powerful, full bodied with strong fruit aromas and wonderful depth of flavour, with persistent length. A 'Super Sardinian'. I absolutley love this one.
