Piedmont & Lombardy

Possibly Italy's most prestigious wine region. Piedmont is famous for two big, powerful reds, Barolo and Barbaresco. They are both made from the same grape, Nebbiolo. Barolo is traditionally the bigger and heavier of the two, spending considerably longer in oak. However, from the right producer, both these wines can be fantastic, depending on which style you prefer. The softer wines from the region include Barbera D'Alba and Dolcetto D'Alba, and also Langhe Rosso.

Batasiolo

Batasiolo, owned by the Dolgani family, is one of the largest privately owned wineries located in the prestigious Langhe Barolo region of Piedmont, where it owns seven of the best vineyards in the Barolo DOCg covering over one hundred hectares. Here the emphasis is firmly on quality from long serving oeneologist Giorgio Lavagna. The Gambero Rosso says 'what is truly astonishing is that such a wide range of wines has been able to achieve such good overall standards and produce some real gems'. They are most famous for their outstanding Barolos but every wine they produce has a class and quality to it.

Sovrana DOC Barbera D'Alba Beni Di Batasiolo 2008 75cl
Reduced for January. Was £11.99, Now Only £9.98 while stocks last!

IWC Bronze Medal & Decanter Bronze Medal for 2005 vintage.14%abv. The area of production of this wine extends over the hills of the Langhe in the Barolo wine-growing area. The fermentation with maceration on the skins lasts from 10 to 15 days, and the wine is stored in small oak barrels for around 12-15 months. After careful tasting the wine is blended and bottled. The Sovrana - or sovereign - is then matured for a further 8-10 months to bring out its very best. Many Barbera's at the lower end of the market can be thin and weak and this has discouraged the Uk buyer. However this one is exceptional, rich smooth fruit, full in the mouth, great length. Delicious to drink on it's own or will go beautifully with food.

Dolcetto D'Alba DOC Beni Di Batasiolo 2006 75cl
13.5%abv. This wine’s area of production extends over the hills around Alba, to the right of the river Tanaro. The grapes are crushed on the same day on which they are harvested, and they remain in contact with the skins for 8/10 days. The wine does not undergo any ageing process. Purple colour with reasonable fruit, well balanced. Dolcetto is typified by a slightly bitter aftertaste, but this can actually make it more appealing with food. This wine's not sweet enough to drink on it's own but it would be delicious with foods like pizza or spicy tomato based dishes.
