Piedmont & Lombardy

Possibly Italy's most prestigious wine region. Piedmont is famous for two big, powerful reds, Barolo and Barbaresco. They are both made from the same grape, Nebbiolo. Barolo is traditionally the bigger and heavier of the two, spending considerably longer in oak. However, from the right producer, both these wines can be fantastic, depending on which style you prefer. The softer wines from the region include Barbera D'Alba and Dolcetto D'Alba, and also Langhe Rosso.

Batasiolo

Batasiolo, owned by the Dolgani family, is one of the largest privately owned wineries located in the prestigious Langhe Barolo region of Piedmont, where it owns seven of the best vineyards in the Barolo DOCg covering over one hundred hectares. Here the emphasis is firmly on quality from long serving oeneologist Giorgio Lavagna. The Gambero Rosso says 'what is truly astonishing is that such a wide range of wines has been able to achieve such good overall standards and produce some real gems'. They are most famous for their outstanding Barolos but every wine they produce has a class and quality to it.

Barolo DOCg Beni Di Batasiolo 2004 75cl

IWC Silver Medal.IWC Bronze Medal & Decanter Commended for 2003 vintage.13.5%abv. This wine is made from Nebbiolo grapes grown on the slopes of the Barolo wine-making area, which is formed by eleven villages all located on the lower spurs of the Langhe. It's got plenty of fruit, big and powerful with great length. It's not as dry or as tannic as many typical Barolos which makes it more approachable for the amateur enthusiast. I personally found it delicious.

14%abv. The vineyards from which this wine is made, are located in the village of Monforte d’Alba, and cover one of the most interesting slopes of the Munie hillside, which is considered by many to be one of the best positions in the valley of Barolo. Intensely garnet-red with orange highlights, it has an ethereal, spicy nose with a touch of vanilla, and a dry, full, velvety, well-balanced taste with a liquorice aftertaste.

Barolo Vigneto Cerequio DOCg Beni Di Batasiolo 2000 75cl

1998 Vintage won IWSC Silver Medal. 14%abv. Our fourth single-vineyard Barolo, Vigneto Cerequio, is made with Nebbiolo grapes selected from one of the most historical vineyards in the Barolo region. Cerequio, located in the town of La Morra, borders two other great vineyards, “La Serra” and “Brunate”, while its slopes facing South to South-East, reach at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level. Due to this ideal exposition, as well as the typical soil of the Langhe hills, composed of blue marl and sand, the grapes from Cerequio produce a wine of intense garnet-red, with a bouquet of wild berries balanced by hints of tobacco, and a dry, warm, voluptuous sensation on the palate.

Barolo Vigneto Boscareto DOCg Beni Di Batasiolo 2000 75cl

14%abv. This wine is made from Nebbiolo grapes grown on the better, higher slopes of the Boscareto vineyard in the village of Serralunga d’Alba. The traditional fermentation with maceration on the skins lasts 10-15 days.

Following this, the wine is aged in oak casks for at least two years and then in the bottle for around one year. Bright garnet-red, it has an ethereal, engaging nose, and an austere, well-structured taste with overtones of tannins which blend perfectly with the bouquet.

Barolo Vigneto Corda della Briccolina DOCg Beni Di Batasiolo 2000 75cl

1998 Vintage won IWSC Silver Medal. 14%abv. The Nebbiolo grapes used to produce the Corda della Briccolina cru are grown on the hills of the village of Serralunga d’Alba in the heart of the Barolo wine-making area. Following its fermentation on the skins lasting around 15 days, the wine is placed in barriques, where it stays for at least two years. A further year in the bottle develops an intensely garnet-red coloured wine with a full nose, which has overtones of ripe fruit that blend well with the wood. Its dry, full, well-balanced taste is provided by the soft, velvety tannins, while its length and aftertaste are decidedly inviting and intense.

Sovrana DOC Barbera D'Alba Beni Di Batasiolo 2006 75cl

IWC Bronze Medal & Decanter Bronze Medal for 2005 vintage.14%abv. The area of production of this wine extends over the hills of the Langhe in the Barolo wine-growing area. The fermentation with maceration on the skins lasts from 10 to 15 days, and the wine is stored in small oak barrels for around 12-15 months. After careful tasting the wine is blended and bottled. The Sovrana - or sovereign - is then matured for a further 8-10 months to bring out its very best. Many Barbera's at the lower end of the market can be thin and weak and this has discouraged the Uk buyer. However this one is exceptional, rich smooth fruit, full in the mouth, great length. Delicious to drink on it's own or will go beautifully with food.

Dolcetto D'Alba DOC Beni Di Batasiolo 2006 75cl

13.5%abv. This wine’s area of production extends over the hills around Alba, to the right of the river Tanaro. The grapes are crushed on the same day on which they are harvested, and they remain in contact with the skins for 8/10 days. The wine does not undergo any ageing process. Purple colour with reasonable fruit, well balanced. Dolcetto is typified by a slightly bitter aftertaste, but this can actually make it more appealing with food. This wine's not sweet enough to drink on it's own but it would be delicious with foods like pizza or spicy tomato based dishes.
