Good Wine Online Germany

German wine has long since had the reputation in the UK of being artificially sweetened, semi fermented grape juice, thanks to the copious volumes of Qualitatswein consumed in the Uk in the 1980s. In truth, the German wine industry has always been capable of producing some very good wines, but most of them were never exported. They make good dessert wines from 'auslese' to 'eiswein', and an increasing number of dry whites and even reds from the pinot noir, known in Germany as spatburgunder. The big problem is the confusion created by the classification system, it can be a minefield for the untrained enthusiast. There is no obvious difference to non German speakers between the name of a specific vineyard and the name of a region encompassing numerous villages Hence it's very difficult to distinguish a top quality single vineyard wine from a wine from a large cooperative. At least until you taste it!

Pinot Grigio Schmitt Sohne 2006 75cl

12.5% abv. What a great discovery this wine is! Pinot Grigio vines were planted in specifically targetted areas of the Pfalz to maximise the benefits of the area's cooler climate. The grapes are picked early and the juice is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The resulting wine is dry with flavours of honey, almond and vanilla. It is delicious, a lot more flavoursome than many traditional Italian Pinots! Recommended.
