Bonfils

Bonfils is a family run wine business which now owns 15 estates stretching from Perpignan to Montpellier, including two Chateaux in Bordeaux. It's run by the sons of Jean Michel who are the 6th generation of the family to take the helm. They have just over 1000 hectares of vineyards making them big enough to benefit from savings made from economies of scale, which they subsequently pass on, making their wines great value for money.

As well as their own vineyards they are also negociants dealing with other winegrowers in the region. They have a state of the art winery on one of their Domaines - de la Motte, roughly in the centre of their vineyards near Narbonne, with a capacity to produce 10 million bottles per year. However this doesn't mean they make mass produced wines! Of course they blend and bottle for other vineyards through their negociant business, but all their own wines under the Bonfils name are made with minimal intervention (including minimal use of sulphur) with the emphasis firmly on quality. As keen advocates of Bonfils, we have been very fortunate to get a limited supply of their GPS range, just released and made in tiny quantities. In fact they only make 6000 bottles of each, the vast majority of which goes to the USA. We are the only UK retailer to offer these wines.

Bonfils GPS La Marechale 2008 75cl

Predominantly Sauvignon Blanc (pop the coordinates on the label into Google maps to view the vineyard), with some Picpoul and Vermentino, all hand harvested and hand sorted. Pale gold in colour with a surprisingly rich nose of pears. This follows onto the palate with flavours of green apples, gooseberry, vanilla and cream. Rich and full bodied in style yet with cleansing acidity and a really long clean finish.

Great wine, extremely limited supply of course.

Bonfils GPS La Serre 2007 75cl

Predominantly Chardonnay with Grenache Blanc and Chenin, all hand harvested and hand sorted. Pale gold in colour with notes of butter on the nose. Delicious full flavour, tropical fruits with some butter and oak on the finish. Again this wine has a really clean finish from the minimal use of additives, refreshing the palate ready for more!

La Coudee d'Or Blanc Domaine Viret 2009 Natural Wine 75cl

Michel Breton has just voted this the best white wine in the Rhone!

AOC Cotes du Rhone. This is a remarkable gourmet wine, made without the addition of any sulphur. It's extremely limited, made in tiny quantities, and is normally reserved by the winery for a handful of their best customers. Philippe has kindly allowed us a small allocation. We enjoyed a bottle with our lunch with Philippe and Christelle, and we were very impressed. It's rich, full and luscious without being heavy and cloying. Deep gold in colour with a nose of vanilla and caramel, flavours of citrus fruit and white chocolate. Superbly balanced with crisp acidity and a long finish. If you've ever enjoyed a white Chateauneuf you'll be very impressed with this. It's extremely difficult to make any wine without the addition of sulphur, although reds are easier as they contain natural anti oxidants in the tannins. To make a white wine with no sulphur is a feat of genius in itself - to make one this good really is a remarkable achievement. But please note, if you like a crisp white such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, you may find the style of this wine too rich and full, so I would suggest opting for one of our low sulphite Sauvignon Blancs. It's designed to accompamy food such as cured meats, dressed salads and runny cheeses.

Please note that because the total sulphur in this wine (produced naturally during fermentation and virtually all 'bound') is 15 mg/l, 'contains sulphites' is a legal requirement on the back label. The free sulphur however is under the legal requirement and is so low it's virtually undetectable.

Due to their unique composition of natural anti oxidants rather than sulphur, these Domain Viret wines will all benefit from decanting or aerating before drinking (preferably for 30 minutes) to get the best out of them. They all open up remarkably once given the chance to react with the air, even this white wine!

Chablis, La Larme D'Or Quinson 2009 75cl
A decent Chablis. Prominent fruit, well balanced with good length. Many Chablis can be a little insipid and watery, but this single vineyard one is pretty good.
