Where to start? France has probably the most varied range of wines in the world due to many factors. Tradition, a myriad of grape varieties, mediteranean and maritime climates, a highly confusing classification system to name but a few. France has been the envy of the world for years when it comes to wine quality and has been the bench mark against which all other wines are judged. The wines commanded price on reputation which unfortunately led to many wine merchants sourcing the cheapest (and poorest) example of each appellation. This has damaged the reputation of many French wines in the UK as the cheapest Muscadet, Chablis, Sancere and Claret were unscrupulously promoted for profit. There are great examples of all these wines available, the secret is knowing which are good. In France, where temperatures are often only just sufficient to propel the grapes to maximum ripeness, the unique mesoclimate of each vineyard is crucial, and can mean the difference between a poor wine in one vineyard and a stunning wine from it's neighbour across the valley.
