Hogue Gewurztraminer Columbia Valley 2005 75cl

12.5% abv. A delightfully unusual wine. Rich fruit and body, almost sweet but with a dry finish. This is a great wine for just enjoying in the garden on a sunny day or it would be well suited to Asian foods, especially spicy dishes.

Hogue Gewurztraminer Columbia Valley 2005 75cl

The Californian wine industry is huge, with vast tracts of land under vine, the equivalent of driving from Manchester to London and seeing nothing but vines! They make some truly stunning wines but struggle against an image dominated by cheap factory produced brands. The immense Central Valley is a mass producer of mediocre grapes, trapped inland between two mountain ranges, too hot, where the grapes ripen too quickly. The secret to finding good Californian wines is to look for vineyards which are cooled by the sea. We've sourced some great wines, in particular The R H Phillips range are exceptional and highly recommended.

Smoking Loon Chardonnay 2005 75cl

IWC Bronze Medal 2007. Wine Spectator 86 Points & Best Buy

13.5% abv. From the Sebastiani family who have been making fine wines in California since 1904 when they emigrated from Northern Italy. They were voted American Winery of the Year in 2005 in Wine Enthusiast magazine. Don Sebastiani's sons, Donny and August joined with their father to create the present Company, Don Sebastiani & Sons in 2001, based in Sonoma County. This Chardonnay is pale in colour with green tints. Good nose with lovely fruit on the palate and very subtle oak. This is a delicious, light, buttery wine, suited to enjoy with seafood or just enjoy drinking on it's own on a sunny day.

R.H. Phillips. The Giguiere family founded their own vineyard in the Dunnigan Hills area. Despite being in the poor quality Central Valley, the vineyards specific location is cooled by sea breezes from San Francisco Bay. As a result of this unique mesoclimate they produced excellent grapes, and facing reluctance by winemakers to trust this unproven grape growing region, they founded their own winery. They now produce nearly half a million cases per year. I personally believe their wines are excellent. Check out http://www.bairds-wines.co.uk/frame_usa.asp

R H Phillips Chardonnay 2002 75cl

13.5% abv. Part barrel fermented for body and toasty flavour, the remainder fermented in stainless steel to retain freshness and flavour. This is a delicious wine, bigger and heavier than most Chardonnays. Very full in the mouth, with long lingering flavours, enhanced by the oak but not overpowered by it. If you enjoy a strongly flavoured Chardonnay this wine is a delight. Great presentation too.

R H Phillips Sauvignon Blanc 2002. Barrel Cuvee 75cl

12% abv. 10% Semillon is added to the Sauvignon to give it a richer texture and more body. To me personally, this makes the wine a little too flabby. It has good fruit and is perfectly nice but I prefer my Sauvignons a little crisper. I've featured it because the rest of the range are so good, but I'd recommend the Hacienda from Chile or McCorkindale from Marlborough over this one.

18 bottles only of this vintage as we're awaiting delivery of 2005.

14.5% abv. I first tasted this wine after six other Chardonnays and was bowled over by the wonderful nose. I knew it was going to be something special. Fabulous full flavours, full in the mouth, supremely balanced and very very long. This wine is aged 'sur lies' in toasted oak for seven months, hence the name. Absolutely Delicious!

R H Phillips Toasted Head Viognier 2005 75cl

14% abv. Very full bodied, rich wine but the flavours are very subtle, more old world France than new world California in style. Be careful not to overchill or you'll kill the flavours. It has a good length and would go very well with buttered fish and subtley flavoured foods.. If you like fine white Burgundies you're likely to enjoy this one. Too subtle for me to drink on it's own but Jane loved it!
