Australian White Wine

Australia is an enormous country but it's area under vine is relatively small when compared to European countries. There were no native grapes until the British settlers arrived, and conditions for survival for any living thing can be challenging to say the least. Virtually all the vineyards are in the cooler South, although Tasmania is probably just too cold to produce any great wines. The Australian wine industry is now booming, thanks to it's abundance of sunshine being tempered by advanced irrigation systems, and the recognition of the need for cooler vineyard sites at altitude to prevent over ripening. Australia seems to produce better wines every year and, if you steer clear of the mass produced factory brands, you will find a variety of styles to suit every taste.

Hugh Hamilton Viognier Mclaren Vale The Loose Cannon 2009 75cl

A limited production wine from Hugh of less than 10,000 bottles. It's a full flavoured viognier, rich and fairly full but not heavy or cloying. In fact it has well balanced acidity and a really clean fresh finish, making it very 'moreish'. Perfect with seafood.

Here it produces a good quality Reisling showing great fruit with plenty of flavour tempered by a clean dry finish. Tim and Simon Wicks run the estate but actually have their good friend Tim Knappstein making the wine alongside their own talented winemaker, Leigh Ratzmer. They're very proud, being a successful family business producing the best quality wines they can. Their brand statement taken from their website reads 'Wicks Estate is a family owned and operated Adelaide Hills wine producer dedicated to producing high quality estate grown wines of exceptional regional character that represent excellent value.'
