Australian Red Wine

Australia is an enormous country but it's area under vine is relatively small when compared to European countries. There were no native grapes until the British settlers arrived, and conditions for survival for any living thing can be challenging to say the least. Virtually all the vineyards are in the cooler South, although Tasmania is probably just too cold to produce any great wines. The Australian wine industry is now booming, thanks to it's abundance of sunshine being tempered by advanced irrigation systems, and the recognition of the need for cooler vineyard sites at altitude to prevent over ripening. Australia seems to produce better wines every year and, if you steer clear of the mass produced factory brands, you will find a variety of styles to suit every taste.

Five Red Stars "Outstanding Winery... James Halliday 2006 to 2016 Australian Wine Companion

Again we have sourced a small parcel of this wine from the 2008 vintage. Please note this wine is cool climate (for Australia) and is a more restrained style than the likes of Barossa for example. It is more European in style rather than a big fruit bomb!

The grapes were sourced from low yielding vines in Frankland River and Mount Barker which are regarded amongst the best sites for Shiraz in all Australia. The wine was matured for 24 months in French oak barriques, both new and one year old.

RRP £17.99. Special offer reduced to £12.95. Very limited stock.

Maxwell's is a small family run operation of 40 acres in Mclaren Vale. Their particular vineyard site is widely regarded one of the best areas for producing top quality Shiraz. The business is run by Mark Maxwell who continues the family tradition of making outstanding hand crafted wines with no compromise. Their wines are very highly regarded by James Halliday - and by me too, as it happens!

Maxwell Silver Hammer Shiraz Mclaren Vale 2011

Royal Adelaide Wine Show - Gold Medal. James Halliday 92 Points.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

The winter of 2010 brought very good rainfall to the region. The combination of good water levels in the subsoil and a mild Summer ripening period encouraged healthy canopy growth and good fruit crops across both red and white varietals. Harvest commenced later than average and the resultant wines have good natural acidity and fruit spice with supple tannin profiles. Grape sugar levels were generally lower than average at the point of harvest and this paired with good acidity has produced some elegant wines which will age gracefully.

COLOUR AND AROMA

The colour is deep dark red with crimson hues. The bouquet is abundant with plum, mulberry and red cherries, coupled with hints of mocha, vanilla, liquorice and black olive.

PALATE

The Maxwell Silver Hammer Shiraz delivers all the hallmarks that make the combination of this variety and the McLaren Vale region so famous - a plush palate showing vibrant dark berry fruits, mulberry and dark chocolate, with underlying notes of freshly ground black pepper, matched with some subtle American oak. The result is a wonderfully generous and approachable wine with excellent depth of flavour, fine silky tannins and fruit length.

CELLARING POTENTIAL

This wine is made to enjoy upon release, however it is expected that it will continue to mature to 6 years of age, assuming satisfactory cellaring conditions.

Maxwell Four Roads Mclaren Vale 2011

THE VINEYARD

These old Grenache vines have grown for 88 years on a classic contoured hill with a south facing aspect. They were bush vines with their thick trunks and sprawling arms until a few years ago when they were lifted up and put on a trellis wire to keep them ripening evenly as they grow older. The soil profile is a light loam over some clay and then deep limestone. The vines are hand pruned and hand picked for the highest quality fruit.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS

The winter of 2010 brought very good rainfall to the region. The combination of good water levels in the subsoil and a mild Summer ripening period encouraged healthy canopy growth and good fruit crops across both red and white varietals. Grape sugar levels were generally lower than average at the point of harvest and this paired with good acidity has produced some elegant wines which will age gracefully.

COLOUR AND AROMA

Vibrant red cherry tones with bright pink hues. The wine shows aromas of maraschino cherries with white pepper spice along with traces of musk.

PALATE

This is a medium bodied wine showing bright mixed red berry fruits balanced perfectly with savoury spices with hints of lavender on the back palate.

CELLARING POTENTIAL

This wine is made to enjoy upon release, however it is expected that it will continue give excellent flavour at 3 to 7 years of age, assuming satisfactory cellaring conditions.

Hugh is the fifth generation of his family to operate their vineyard which was established way back in 1837 at the very beginning of the Australian wine industry. It's a family run business with his wife Pam and daughter Mary. Their wines are exceptional, made with pride and passion. Hugh sees himself as something of a 'black sheep' hence the theme for his winery. They're very highly regarded with James Halliday awarding them a five star rating meaning 'An outstanding winery capable of producing wines of the highest calibre'.

Hugh Hamilton Shiraz Mclaren Vale The Rascal 2011 75cl

Shiraz flourishes in Mclaren Vale and the Hamiltons are particularly proud of this wine, as it's made with minimal intervention as an expression ot the 'terroir'. The wine is dark in colour with lots of ripe fruit on the palate. It has great mouth feel, it's very smooth and almost velvety on the tongue. Although very strong, the palate's not dominated by the alcohol, more enhanced by it. This wine's very good indeed and, a little suprisingly, a great accompaniment to food.

Hugh Hamilton Cabernet Sauvignon Mclaren Vale The Villain 2007/8 75cl

Very deep ruby in colour with powerful aromas of chocolate on the nose. This wine has big powerful fruit on the palate with caramel flavours. The strong fruit is beautifully balanced by big alcohol and integrated tannins. Supremely long on the finish. This wine is superb.
