Argentinian White Wine

Argentina is the fifth largest producer of wine in the world and until recently was a large consumer too. However economic crisis and spiralling inflation have helped reduce their domestic consumption. At the same time a shift in political attitudes opened up Argentina's borders and investors from the USA and Europe invested heavily in vineyard and winery projects.

The results were a dramatic improvement in quality and the replanting of some traditional grape varieties with International ones, and the introduction of Argentinian wines onto the International market. Argentinian grapes of note include Torontes for the white and Bonarda and Tannat for the red. They are best known for their excellent reds made from the Malbec grape, which ripens far better in the Argentinian climate than it ever could in it's native France. Argentina lies between the same lines of latitude as South Africa, South Australia and New Zealand and has a similar climate. Add to this glorious sunshine, the cooling effect of the vineyards at altitude in the foothills of the Andes and Argentina has the natural attributes to produce truly world class wines.

Argentina's image has suffered due to the mass produced cheap plonk featured in the supermarkets for the last few years, and the low end wines imported by the big on-trade wholesalers. But don't be fooled, that is much more a reflection on the supermarkets and wholesalers than on Argentina! The quality end of the spectrum in Argentina is right up there amongst the very best in the world. They're able to produce stunning world class wines and at very competitive prices. If you've never tried GOOD Argentine wine before please try a few bottles from our site, and you'll wonder why you didn't do it years ago! Value for money they are currently unbeatable.

Mauricio Lorca Fantasia Chardonnay 2011 75cl

A fantastic wine from Mauricio. From low yielding vines, all hand picked made in Maurio's typical style where the quality of the fruit does all the talking. He's made this wine withoout oak to let the purity of the fruit shine through. It's full of tropical fruit flavour, good body with a fresh clean finish. This is a great value quality Chardonnay, highly recommended.

Susana Balbo Dominio del Plata Zohar Fiano 2011 75cl

This delicious wine is a world first!

Fiano is a traditional Italian grape from Campania where it makes some exceptionally fresh aromatic dry white wines which have the longevity to develop into fuller, rounder wines with age. Susana has a tiny 2 hectares of Fiano in the La Rioja district north of Mendoza, the only known plantings in Argentina, which she had intended using for blending purposes. However once she tasted the actual wine from tank it was so good she decided to release it as a single varietal - and we're delighted she did.

It's pale gold in clour. Swirl it around and the legs stick to the glass suggesting it's going to be a big, full wine. And yes, it is big and rich with plenty of body but also packed with fruit and very fresh, very Italian in style. This wine is delicious. Well done Susana for giving us the opportunity to try such an unusual and fantastic offering!

Susana Balbo Dominio del Plata Anubis Chardonnay 2011 75cl

A lovely fresh Chardonnay from Susana. This wine is unoaked retaining the clean fresh zingy citrus flavours of the grape. It's tropical fruit is enhanced by a rich creamy palate (suggesting this wine underwent a degree of malolactic fermentation). It's very well balanced with palate cleansing acidity and a long lingering finish.

A super fresh Sauvignon. Plenty of flavour with noticeable body for a Sauvignon. Not in the crisp "green apple" style, more rounded and full with gentle acidity.

Bodegas El Porvenir Laborum Torrontes 2011 75cl

Just moved onto the 2010 vintage. Stephen Spurrier - Best New World White Wine August 2010 for the 2008

13.5% abv. Only 10526 bottles produced. Beautiful wine. 2004 vintage won International Vinalies Paris Silver Medal, Women's Choice Argentina Gold Medal, with 2002 vintage winning a host of medals too. Highly floral, full of tropical flavours with nicely balanced acidity and great length. Torrontes is a native Argentinian grape. This wine has Sauvignon like fruit without the high acidity level, to make it a delicous, full flavoured, refreshing wine to enjoy on it's own as a 'glass of wine'. However it's also well suited to certain foods especially salads, some buttered fish dishes and strongly flavoured non-spicy curries.
