Argentina

Argentina is the fifth largest producer of wine in the world and until recently was a large consumer too. However economic crisis and spiralling inflation have helped reduce their domestic consumption. At the same time a shift in political attitudes opened up Argentina's borders and investors from the USA and Europe invested heavily in vineyard and winery projects. The results were a dramatic improvement in quality and the replanting of some traditional grape varieties with International ones, and the introduction of Argentinian wines onto the Inernational market. Argentinian grapes of note include Torontes for the white and Bonarda for the red. They also make some excellent reds from Malbec, which ripens far better in the Argentinian climate than it ever could in it's native France. We look forward to sourcing more quality Argentinian wines in the near future.

Clara Benegas Chardonnay 2005 75cl

13%abv. Limited production of only 15 000 bottles per year. Fantastic presentation. Pale gold in colour. This wine is 100% Chardonnay but has an unusually floral nose, almost Sauvignon like, which carries through into the initial flavours where it transforms into Chardonnay fruit. Full in the mouth with plenty of body, nicely balanced with good length. Very enjoyable to drink on it's own or will pair well with light dishes like chicken or salads. A great summer wine.

Bodegas El Porvenir Laborum Torrontes 2008 75cl

13.5% abv. Only 10526 bottles produced. Beautiful wine. 2004 vintage won International Vinalies Paris Silver Medal, Women's Choice Argentina Gold Medal, with 2002 vintage winning a host of medals too. Highly floral, full of tropical flavours with nicely balanced acidity and great length. Torrontes is a native Argentinian grape. This wine has Sauvignon like fruit without the high acidity level, to make it a delicous, full flavoured, refreshing wine to enjoy on it's own as a 'glass of wine'. However it's also well suited to certain foods especially salads, some buttered fish dishes and strongly flavoured non-spicy curries.

Gouguenheim Chardonnay Valle Escondido 2007 75cl

13%abv. This is a pale, crisp wine. Lovely flavour, well balanced with good length. Very much in the style of a good white Burgundy, but substantially cheaper. It's well worth trying to put aside your sceptisism and trying this wine if you're a Burgundy fan. You'd have to pay a lot of money for the French equivalent.

Don Prospero Pizzorno Sauvignon Blanc 2008 75cl

13%abv. This wine is actually from Uruguay wedged between Argentina and Brazil, but more importantly between 30 and 35 degrees South, the optimum latitude for grape cultivation in the Southern hemisphere. This is a superb fresh, crisp Sauvignon from a boutique family winery. Ana Laura Rodriguez handles the marketing while her husband, Carlos, oversees the daily activities in their vineyards. Virtually everything is done by hand including the picking. Ana was delighted that we were so impressed with this wine and we're equally delighted to promote it to our customers. It's delicious.
