We've selected some of the very best sparkling wines from different regions, all selected for their outstanding quality. We're delighted to be offering Pongracz sparkling wines from South Africa, the Brut, the Rose and the truly amazing Desiderius. All three of these wines are truly superb, with the Rose and Desiderius only produced in small quantities and available on an allocation only basis.

This is a real beauty - one of Argentina's best sparkling wines. Top Champagne quality. I've been wanting to try it for some time and was fortunate when last in London that I went to the fabulous Constancia Argentine Grill on the corner of Tower Bridge Road. (One of the Argentine importers we deal with took us there on their opening night the previous year while we were at the London Wine Fare, and it was fantastic so we go back whenever we're in London). Although it wasn't on the list I asked Sebastian if he had any, and by chance he had one bottle so we snapped his hand off! I've now retasted a bottle which we took to Carlo's. It's superb. A very very fine mousse with tiny bubbles, very pale in colour. Sweet fruit initially which is then tempered by a very clean, bone dry finish, which reminded me very much of top class Prosecco. It's delicious, far better than many Champagnes twice the price! Highly recommended.

Vina Casablanca Blanc de Blanc Brut 75cl

 13% abv. A superb sparkling wine from Vina Casablanca, from the Casablanca Valley in Chile. It's a blend of 92% Chardonnay and 8% Chenin Blanc. The grapes are all hand picked in the early hours to retain maximum freshness, then they undergo another selection by hand when they reach the winery to ensure only the very best grapes make it into this blend. The must is cool fermented in stainless steel to gaurantee maximum flavour. The resulting wine is elegant with delicious citrus fruit flavours, a fine persistent mousse and superbly balanced acidity, with a long lingering finish. It's delicious.

Pongracz Desiderius 2002 75cl

 The 2001 was judged South Africa's best sparkling wine and was awarded a host of gold medals and trophies including - Double Gold Medal Winner at the Veritas Awards, Decanter Trophy for Best South African Sparkling, Michael Angelo Awards Gold Medal, Tri Nations Gold Medal.

The 2002 has only just been released after spending 87 months ageing on the lees! The 2001 is the best sparkling wine I've tasted. It was exquisite, but sadly now all gone. This 2002 is also excellent although as it's only just been bottled it will really benefit from 6 months bottle ageing prior to drinking, and before we can compare it fairly with the mighty 01. It is of course extremely limited availability, on an allocation only basis from Pongracz, and I doubt there will be any left in 6 months so it would be wise to buy some now and lay it down. We are one of only a handful of stockists in the UK and we have only got about 40 bottles left. Please read all about it here

Pongracz Rose 75cl

 Again extremely limited, it's a new wine for Pongracz made in tiny quantities and sold on an allocation only basis. Fabulous wine, like a Laurent Perrier Rose! Salmon pink with tiny bubbles. Lovely flavours with great length, superbly balanced acidity. Fine concentrated mousse which lasts and lasts. I predict the price of this wine will rocket as it gets discovered. It's a real bargain at this price - limited stocks of course, so be quick!

Pongracz Brut 75cl

 Michael Angelo Awards - Gold Medal, South African Airlines Business Class - Trophy Best Sparkling, plus a host of other awards over the years.

Pongracz sparkling wines are amongst the best we've discovered. Again limited, this is a superb sparkling wine and great value. Clean and crisp with flavours of green apples. Lively mousse with fine bubbles and very well balanced acidity. Delicious! This is a great sparkler for any celebration.

Krone Methode Cap Classique Brut Rose 2005 75cl

 John Platter 4 Stars for the previous vintage (the 02). This vintage has only just been released and hasn't been rated yet but I'm sure it'll do very well!

12% abv. Krone Sparkling Rose is produced by a family owned vineyard called Twee Jongen Gezellen, meaning two young bachelors. 'The House of Krone' distinguishes their premium sparkling range from the vineyards still offerings. They are the second oldest family owned vineyard in South Africa, proudly producing premium wines. The grapes for this Rose were hand picked in the middle of the night, and the wine subsequently hand crafted and matured on the lees. It's pale salmon pink in colour with wonderful flavours and a fine mousse. Supremely balanced and eminently drinkable. Mary Krone is also very keen on producing wines naturally with minimal additives such as sulphur, and Jane can drink this wine with no adverse reaction whatsoever. It's delicious and great value.

Prosecco Di Valdobbiadenne, Bortolomiol Banda Rossa 75cl

 IWC Bronze Medal. 11.5% abv. Fabulous! If you've never tried a good Prosecco please try this one. The sparkling wine market has been dominated by expensive Champagne and bone dry, sometimes acidic, Cava. Now the Italians are showing the rest of the world how to do it. The 'Banda Rossa' denotes this is the best wine from the prestigious Bortolomiol House. Persistent mousse, but not overly gassy, supremely balanced acidity, great flavour and just off dry on the finish. This wine is absolutely delicious and highly recommended. Perfect for weddings, christenings, birthdays etc but at this price there's no need to wait for a special occassion. Great presentation too.

This is also a superb sparkling wine. The presentation issue has now been resolved and it looks pretty good. The wine itself is superb. Great mousse, very well balanced with delicious flavours. No suprise really when you consider Morton are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir aficianados. Highly recommended!

Prosecco IGT Corda Domiziano Frizzante 75cl

 11% abv. A frizzante - lightly sparkling - Prosecco with a cork closure, requiring a corkscrew to open, but still goes off with a pop! This style of Prosecco has always been popular with the Italians as an aperitif or a summer drink, and it's now growing quickly in popularity in the UK too. Lovely flavours with a degree of sweet fruit, full in the mouth, with a really dry crisp finish. Well balanced acidity too. This is a very enjoyable summer wine, give it a try!

 11% abv. Extra dry Spumante. This is a delicious Prosecco with concentrated fruit flavours from the premier Prosecco region. The sweetness of the fruit is beautifully contrasted against the crisp, bone dry finish. Well balanced acidity with a consistent mousse. Ideal aperitif or celebration wine, or just to enjoy with friends. Presentation is also very impressive with an embossed bottle, making it an ideal expensive looking gift.

Below are my tasting notes for the 2000. I will be tasting this 2002 shortly. They've used Chardonnay in the new blend although it's still dominated by Pinot Meunier in the Champagne stlye. Morton say it's as good as the 2000 so I'm really looking forward to trying it.

This is a fantastic sparkling wine, better than many Champagnes. Morton have been waiting five years to release this vintage. as it's their first vintage to consist of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Pinot Meunier. They've dropped the Chardonnay to concentrate on the two other Champagne grapes. Pinot Meunier gives this wine it's concentrated nose and strong fruit characteristics, while the Pinot Noir contributes body and structure. The wine has a concentrated nose followed on the palate by strong fruit flavours with a rich and creamy mouthfeel. Great mousse with very well balanced acidity and a bone dry finish with great length. Once you've tried this wine you'll never go back to non vintage Champagnes again, it's pure indulgence! This is an exclusive wine with serious prestige as it's extremely rare in the UK.

This is the very last of the stunning 2000 vintage in the world as far as we know. Even Morton Estates themselves have none left in New Zealand. Now this vintage is very special. Jaume Serra Cava Brut Nature 75cl

 11.5% abv. This is a delicious, easy drinking Cava with well balanced acidity. Most Cavas at this price tend to be green and overly acidic, and can leave you wondering how it ever became so popular. This one however goes a long way to restoring people's faith in the name. Great as an aperitif or for any celebration. As regards sulphites, Jane can drink it without a reaction but if you're sulphite sensitive I'd recommend playing it safe and going for the fabulous Morton Estates Sec, which Jane and I drink buckets of!
