Colmant is a small family winery producing South Africa's finest sparkling wines, in the traditional Champagne style. Rich full and biscuity with bags of flavour and excellent balance.
The Colmants emigrated from Belgium to South Africa in 2002 and settled in the stunning Franschoek Valley. Here they bought a small vineyard and set about making "Champagne" in South Africa.
They were fortunate to have help from French champagne producing friends, and only planted champagne grapes (chardonnay and pinot noir). They follow the traditional champagne methods of extensive lees ageing, degorgement and back blending of older cuvees to produce wines which I believe are better than many Champagnes three times the price. They released their first vintage in 2005.
Last year at the South African sparkling wines competition (Method Cap Classique) their Blanc de Blancs Chardonnay won best Blanc de Blanc NV, and their Brut Reserve also won the best Brut Reserve NV!
These wines are special. They keep production very small and sell out annually, as their focus is on quality above all else - not commercial gain! I consider myself very fortunate that they made 30 dozen available for me as their Blanc de Blancs had only just been released when I asked so I struck lucky!
You would have to spend a lot more to get the French equivalent in quality!
