Sensational Wines

We have a lot of exceptional wines as we cherry pick the very best wines we discover, and the whole ethos of our business is about quality first.

We have far too many to list on one page though so please read through the various countries in the menu on the left of this page to find wines to suit your tastes. And please be open minded to new countries and regions, and new grape varieties as well, as there is a great deal to discover.

We now specialise in wines from Argentina and South Africa as they are producing truly world class wines, but at a fraction of the price of Italian or French alternatives. Cheap factory produced wines from both these countries have damaged their respective reputations in the UK, but taste their best hand made wines and you'll be amazed at the quality....and quickly converted.

We also import directly from several boutique wineries in New Zealand who are now producing world class reds (not just Pinot Noir!) as well as the fantastic whites they're famous for. And we also source some great boutique Australian wines through a good friend of ours who imports from a dozen wineries in the Mclaren Vale/Adelaide Hills region.

We've put together an initial selection for you below, but there are many more on our site. So please read through the site at your leisure to discover some of the best wines available anywhere in the UK.

Made from grapes grown exclusively at their Mere Road vineyard, all hand picked. These "Mere Road" wines are made by Tim Preston, whereas their Trust vineyard wines are made by Tim's dad, Paddy. So there is plenty of rivalry between them as you can imagine!

Exceptionally limited of course. Mills Reef wines are exclusive to us in the UK and we only have a few cases on our allocation. This wine is about to be featured at the Taste of Gold event in London so will likely sell out within a few days. If you want some I suggest you order now.

Julicher Estate Martinborough Pinot Noir 2009 75cl

New Zealand International Wine Show 2011 - Gold Medal

This wine is a blend of different clones of Pinot Noir from different parts of the vineyard, giving Wim the opportunity to blend the wine to his exact requirements. The grapes were hand harvested on 7th April 2009 into small vats. After fermentation the wine was aged in 35% new French oak for 11 months. This is a superb Pinot, outclassing many of it's Central Otago rivals at twice the price.

Extremely limited.

Fresh stock has just arrived, although it will sell quickly!

Just moved onto 09 - Argentine Wine Awards Silver Medal. The 2007 won Argentine Wine Awards Gold Medal and Decanter Bronze Medal, 2005 was awarded IWC 2007 - Gold Medal, Wines of Argentina 2007 - Gold Medal, Hyatt Best Wines - Gold Medal.

What a wine for showcasing what Argentina can produce. YBS stands for Year's Barrel Selection, and is the personal selection of winery owner Matias Sanchez. It's a blend of the year's best three barrels, 60% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah, blended to perfection then barrel aged. The wine is big and powerful, wonderfully smooth, well balanced with a really long lingering finish. It's gaining a reputation in the Uk and demand is soon likely to outstrip supply.

Bodegas El Porvenir - PORVENIR 2006 75cl

New vintage 2006 just arrived. Presentation has changed slightly. Hong Kong International Wine Show - Trophy for Best Argentine Wine. Wine Advocate 90 Points

This 2006 vintage is superb - one of our very best wines, and seriously good value.

This is the flagship wine from El Porvenir, a blend of Cabernet, Malbec, Syrah and Tannat. Only 8500 bottles produced. I'm a huge fan of El Porvenir - they're Laborum wines are stunning, and this is even better. It's a big, powerful wine but also structured and refined. El Porvenir is the highest quality winery in the world, and that altitude lends certain characteristics to the wines which make them some of the very best in Argentina. The altitude produces wines with sweet tannins and good body with plenty of acidity which is essential for making top quality balanced wines. The soil also contains greater mineral and salt content which influences the wine's flavour. It's a superb wine, with big fruit flavours, sweet tannins, backbone and structure. It's full in the mouth and wonderfully smooth with great overall balance - new to the UK market. Fantastic wine!

Riglos Gran Corte 2009 75cl

2009 has just been awarded Wine Enthusiast's "Best Wine of 2012" globally! 2008 was one of the Top 10 South American Wines 2012, Wine Enthusiast 93 Points and Editor's Choice. We have just received the 2009

Riglos is a new venture, a group of talented winemakers who got together to produce ultra premium wines. Their vineyards are in the Uco Valley, Mendoza.

This Gran Corte is their top wine and it blew me away - it is something very special. From a single vineyard, only 3824 bottles were made of this vintage. Naturally they grow the grapes and make their wines with great care so I won't labour the point about needing perfect fruit to make perfect wine - you can read all about that at their website if you like. I'll just tell you about the wine.

It's a blend of 50% Malbec, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc aged in new French oak for 22 months. What I will say however is that this wine is quite spectacular. Floral on the nose with intense concentrated fruit on the palate. Medium bodied, elegant and structured with a very long finish.

We've got some stunning wines from Argentina such as Eral Bravo YBS, Susana Balbo Nosotros, Porvenir, Mauricio Lorca Inspirado and Benegas Lynch Meritage, and this wine is right up there amongst them.

Extremely limited of course, although on first tasting we bought half the UK allocation!

Susana Balbo Nosotros Malbec 2008 75cl

2007 was awarded Robert Parker Wine Advocate 93 Points, Steven Tanzer 92 Points. We've just moved onto the 2008.

Nosotros is perhaps Argentina's ultimate wine, a joint venture from Susana Balbo and Pedro Marchevsky. 100% Malbec. Very deep purple in colour with strong liquorice on the nose. Incredible concentration of fruit, supremely balanced with palate cleansing acidity and superb length. Exceptionally limited.

UPDATE - We have just visited the biggest and best Argentine tasting of the year "Malbec and More" at the Argentine Ambassador's residence, where some of the country's top wines were on taste. This Nosotros was the ultimate wine at the tasting, and it was incredible, it stood out head and shoulders above all the others - and it was up against some great wines! It is a remarkable wine.

August 2009 - Jancis Robinson has just declared this wine to be 'truly excellent' and one of her top 10 super premium Argentine reds! We don't always share the same opinions but she's definitely got it right this time.

Robert Parker 90 Points

Only 1 bottle of 05 left then we're onto 06.

15% abv. This is an incredible wine, made from vines over 80 years old, aged in new French oak. These are the oldest vineyards at Finca Libertad and Federico only makes a tiny quantity of this beautiful wine - 2000 bottles annually. Both Parker and Spurrier give it high praise indeed, and I'm sure there's quite a few envious Borderlaise who wish they could produce wine of this standard. The wine is deep ruby in colour, full flavoured and tremendously smooth with mature tannins. Very very long. Quite simply it's one of the best wines I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. Drinking superbly already but will keep (improving?) for years to come. If you're looking for a really good wine to splash out on and treat yourself to, I highly recommend you try a bottle!

Ernie Els Proprietor's Blend 2010

Platter 4.5 Stars, Veritas Awards 2012 Silver Medal, International Wine Challenge Silver Medal

Personally for my own tastes, I believe this is their best wine. It's a six way blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, all vinified separately then blended and aged in oak for 15 months. Very deep ruby in colour, again with great legs. Just reviewing my tasting notes here, I described it as "spectacular....incredibly smooth.....wonderful weight and balance....great length (dry finish)....black fruits....perfectly balanced". As you can tell I was very impressed by it!

Bodegas Palacio was founded in 1894 and this wine has been named '1894' as a tribute to that event, as it is the winery's ultimate wine. Michel Rolland has input into the winemaking.

Schiopetto Rivarossa 2009 75cl

This wine is very highly regarded by Gambero Rosso, Robert Parker (and me!). As this 09 has only just been released it hasn't been entered for any awards yet, or reviewed by GR, but I'm sure it will do very well.

15% abv. IGT Venezia Giulia. Mario Schiopetto is the 'godfather' of the Friulian wine industry, as he pioneered the transformation from strong, rustic wines to classic, structured wines of quality, reflecting Friuli's unique terroir. Since his death his children, Mario, Carlo and Giorgio have continued running the estate making elegant, complex wines with a dedication to quality over commercialism. They're world famous for their whites but they make two excellent reds as well. The winery was named Winery of the Year 2009 by Wine & Spirits Magazine.

This Rivarossa is superb. I actually remarked on tasting it that 'it was better than Zenato's Ripassa' which is high praise indeed as Zenato Ripassa has consistently been one of my favourite wines every year for the last five years! I was certainly surprised at how good it was. It's a different style, more complex, structured and somehow classical - a purity of fruit rather than power. Medium bodied, somehow elegant, with tremendous length. It's a great wine, perfect with food.

Morton Estates Hawkes Bay Black Label Chardonnay 2007 75cl

Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2011 - Gold Medal. Mercedes Benz Hakes Bay Wine Awards Gold Medal 2010, Decanter World Wine Awards Silver Medal 2011, International Wine Challenge Silver Medal 2011 amongst others!

Made from fruit from their Riverview vineyard, fermented in new French oak then aged for a further twelve months, again in French oak. This is a rich, full wine with intense fruit and a long dry finish. Another great wine in a different style to the White Label Chardonnay below. This Black Label is a little fuller and richer suited to richer foods, or to savour on it's own. We've just moved onto this 07 which is fantastic. In fact the fruit was so good that Morton's debated whether or not to make a Coniglio from this 2007. In the end they chose not to, so after 2004 they only made Coniglio again from the 2010 (not ready for release for quite some time of course!). So this Black Label 2007 is "a baby Coniglio" - almost as good but half the price. I highly recommend it at this price, it is a stunning wine.

Very limited. And a superb wine!

15% abv. Please don't be deterred from trying this wine because it's a Sangiovese that's not from Italy! This is a fantastic wine and is something special. 100% Sangiovese from 55 year old vines, with only 14500 bottles produced. Consultant winemaker Michel Rolland has worked his magic once again as he does with all the Benegas reds. This is a superb wine, big, warm and rounded, supremely smooth, structured and layered. Plenty of delicious fruit, well balanced and nowhere near as dry on the finish as traditional Italian Sangiovese. We thoroughly enjoyed this wine in our friend's Italian restaurant where we followed it with an Amarone Zenato and it stood up very well indeed. Highly recommended, have it with food. Claymore 'Nirvana' Reserve Shiraz Clare Valley 2009 75cl

Sorry - the 2006 Winestate Best Shiraz in the World Winner has now sold out. We're now onto the fabulous 2009.

James Halliday - 92 Points

This is Claymore's ultra premium wine. 100% Shiraz from Claymore's Penwortham vineyard at altitude. This is a big, powerful, savoury Shiraz full of complex flavours of dark chocolate and black fruits. Well balanced with good body added from 24 months in French oak, with a 'velvet' mouth feel. This is a big wine and needs 20 minutes breathing or decanting to open up to be fully appreciated. Intense fruit flavours with vanilla on the really long finish. Can be savoured on it's own but I thoroughly enjoyed it with a Chinese banquet. Superb wine, but very limited. It sells out in no time in Australia so we're very fortunate to get a small allocation each year.

14.5% abv. This is the flagship wine from this highly successful winery. Although it's now grown to be South Africa's third largest producer, this is because it's grower owned with a firm focus on producing quality wines at affordable prices. Platter describes this wine as 'Rich, powerful and alluring. Layers of ripe red berries, vanilla and cinnamon, sheathed in svelte harmonious fruit, and oak tannins (34 months in French and American oak). Bold, structured and poised'. I was tipped off about this wine by a colleague who was involved with the winery, and bought some on his recommendation. I'll be adding my tasting notes shortly although I can never be as clear and concise as Platter!

Took a bottle to Carlo's restaurant to pair it with a Welsh Black Tbone. It's fantastic. Big juicy fruit with a mouthfeel like velvet, silky smooth, lively acidity making it ideal with food. Great length too. Like a South African Amarone! This is a cracker!

Grand Hyatt - Gold Medal 2010 for the 06

Please note this is a library photo of the Carmenere. This blend has fantastic presentation - it looks similar but is in an even larger heavy weight bottle.

14.5%abv. Made up of 45% Syrah, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot. Made from hand picked grapes, aged for 18 months in French oak. This wine is a brand new release for Aresti and is the premium wine of the estate. It isn't even on their website yet. It's stunningly good! Purple colour with ruby hints, with a big nose. Intense fruit flavours on the palate balanced by the oak, with a little white pepper, and vanilla on the finish. It's very very smooth, full in the mouth with a very long finish. The best fruit from their Stone Creek vineyard in Marlborough was harvested at the optimum time to produce this delicious wine. Fermented in stainless steel without wood ageing, to preserve the cherry fruit flavours and the slightly earthy notes from the terroir of the particular vineyard. A lovely full wine, smooth and lingering with soft tannins. Pair with light meats or poultry. I recently enjoyed a bottle in a very good local restaurant with John Coney. It was the ideal accompaniment to our duck leg starter and our Welsh lamb main course. This is a great food wine. Highly recommended.

Wine Orbit 90 Points. New Zealand International Wine Show 2011 - Bronze Medal, 4.5 Stars Sam Kim, 4.5 Stars Yvonne Lorkin, 87 Points Bob Campbell, 4 Stars Raymond Chan

A delicious Chardonnay with fruit, oak and power. The grapes were sourced from three different vineyards in the Meeanee district of Hawke's Bay, noted for producing strong fruit aromas and flavours. Each parcel was vinified separately in barrel with a third of the wine also undergoing malolactic fermentation to give a richer, creamier style. The entire parcels of wine were then further barrel aged for ten months before final blending.

The wine is delicious with strong fruit and butter notes. The oak is well integrated giving a wonderful overall balance. This is very good wine, one our very best Chardonnays!

Awards info pending, but the 2010 is superb so should be highly rated. John Platter 4 Stars for the 09

Zevenwacht Z Gewurztraminer Stellenbosch is produced in tiny quantities of only 1200 bottles per vintage. It's made from grapes from 25 year old vines, which underwent 'rigorous selection' before being picked by hand in the early hours of Saturday morning, March the 8th! Now that's what I call a hand crafted wine! I can't praise this wine enough. Zevenwacht describe it as 'sumptuously fragrant... beautiful mouthfeel....seductive mid palate and a lingering finish'. This really is an exceptional wine, and a real bargain at this price, but be quick it's extremely limited. It's gained popularity in SA and is hugely oversubscribed, so we now get an annual allowance from Denise of ony 15 cases of 6.
