Susana Balbo Nosotros Malbec 2007 75cl

One of Argentina's rarest and most prestigious wines. Originally only 24 bottles released to Europe - Gaucho Grill got 8 of them and we got the other 16. We've now had the remaining stock of another 3 dozen, but that is it for UK stock!

Robert Parker Wine Advocate 93 Points, Steven Tanzer 92 Points.

14.5% abv. Nosotros is perhaps Argentina's ultimate wine, a joint venture from Susana Balbo and Pedro Marchevsky. 100% Malbec. Very deep purple in colour with strong liquorice on the nose. Incredible concentration of fruit, supremely balanced with palate cleansing acidity and superb length. Exceptionally limited, there are only 30 bottles left in Europe - all with us.

UPDATE - We have just visited the biggest and best Argentine tasting of the year "Malbec and More" at the Argentine Ambassador's residence, where some of the country's top wines were on taste. This Nosotros was the ultimate wine at the tasting, and it was incredible, it stood out head and shoulders above all the others - and it was up against some great wines! It is a remarkable wine.

Benegas Lynch Cabernet Franc 2006 75cl

August 2009 - Jancis Robinson has just declared this wine to be 'truly excellent' and one of her top 10 super premium Argentine reds! We don't always share the same opinions but she's definitely got it right this time.

Robert Parker 90 Points

Only 1 bottle of 05 left then we're onto 06.

15% abv. This is an incredible wine, made from vines over 80 years old, aged in new French oak. These are the oldest vineyards at Finca Libertad and Federico only makes a tiny quantity of this beautiful wine - 2000 bottles annually. Both Parker and Spurrier give it high praise indeed, and I'm sure there's quite a few envious Borderlaise who wish they could produce wine of this standard. The wine is deep ruby in colour, full flavoured and tremendously smooth with mature tannins. Very very long. Quite simply it's one of the best wines I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. Drinking superbly already but will keep (improving?) for years to come. If you're looking for a really good wine to splash out on and treat yourself to, I highly recommend you try a bottle!

Ernie Els Proprietor's Blend 2008

John Platter 4.5 Stars, Veritas Bronze Medal

Personally for my own tastes, I believe this is their best wine. It's a six way blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all vinified separately then blended and aged in oak for 15 months. Very deep ruby in colour, again with great legs. Just reviewing my tasting notes here, I described it as "spectacular....incredibly smooth.....wonderful weight and balance....great length (dry finish)....black fruits....perfectly balanced". As you can tell I was very impressed by it!

Cosme Palacio 1894 Rioja 2007 75cl

New Wave Spanish Wine Awards 2010 - Gold Medal. Decanter - Commended.

Currently available at Harrods at £49.95. We've put it on offer at £28.99

DOC Rioja. This is a brand new premium wine from this prestigious award winning boutique winery, made in tiny quantities, and is available on an allocation only basis of course. My tasting notes from last May say 'excellent wine, exceptionally smooth....' I look forward to tasting it again now it's in stock as I remember it was something special. Bodegas Palacio was founded in 1894 and this wine has been named '1894' as a tribute to that event, as it is the winery's ultimate wine. Michel Rolland has input into the winemaking.

Alcor Grau Vell 2005 75cl

DO Catalunya. This is a stunning boutique wine made in tiny quantities of only 5500 bottles per year. 47% Syrah, 22% Garnacha (Grenache), 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Marcelan and 5% Monastrell, part fermented in oak barrels, then subsequently aged for 18 months in half new French oak and half second use French oak. The resulting wine is incredible, amazingly smooth with huge fruit. I have it down in my tasting notes as 'simply stunning'. Very limited on allocation only.

Titan del Bendito DOC Toro 2006 75cl

This is a tiny boutique vineyard of only 8 hectares owned by Frenchman Antony Terryn producing some stunning wines. Located in the little known DOC of Toro in North West Spain, he makes his wines from Tinto do Toro, the local variety of Tempranillo.

15% abv, 20 months in oak. Made from low yielding vines of between 50 and 100 years old. Severely limited. Deep opaque purple in colour with viscous legs and a big nose of dark cherry. This is a big wine which needs to breathe. Intense fruit on the palate with noticeable alcohol and acidity, all supremely balanced. Very very long with a concentrated dry finish. Great with food, we had it with steak. Jane absolutely loved it. I thought it was superb too but I tend to go for reds in a slightly less dry style such as Amarone. If you like this style - big powerful dry reds - this is superb!

Syrah 50%, Mouverdre 44%, Viognier 4% and Grenache 2%. This is a fantastic Rhone blend. I've just tasted it again and I'm lost for words. The wine is beautiful, intense plum colour, very very smooth with wonderful 'Rhone' flavours of dark chocolate. 'Blooming gorgeous' was how Jane described it.

Schiopetto Rivarossa 2008 75cl

This wine is very highly regarded by Gambero Rosso, Robert Parker (and me!). As this 08 has only just been released it hasn't been entered for any awards yet, or reviewed by GR, but I'm sure it will do very well.

15% abv. IGT Venezia Giulia. Mario Schiopetto is the 'godfather' of the Friulian wine industry, as he pioneered the transformation from strong, rustic wines to classic, structured wines of quality, reflecting Friuli's unique terroir. Since his death his children, Mario, Carlo and Giorgio have continued running the estate making elegant, complex wines with a dedication to quality over commercialism. They're world famous for their whites but they make two excellent reds as well. The winery was named Winery of the Year 2009 by Wine & Spirits Magazine.

This Rivarossa is superb. I actually remarked on tasting it that 'it was better than Zenato's Ripassa' which is high praise indeed as Zenato Ripassa has consistently been one of my favourite wines every year for the last five years! I was certainly surprised at how good it was. It's a different style, more complex, structured and somehow classical - a purity of fruit rather than power. Medium bodied, somehow elegant, with tremendous length. It's a great wine, perfect with food.

Morton Estates Coniglio Hawkes Bay Chardonnay 2004 75cl

IWSC - Gold Medal Best in Class, Decanter - Silver Medal, 09 & 10, 94 Points Bob Campbell, "the Rolls Royce of New Zealand Chardonnays" - Michael Cooper, IWC Bronze Medal.

Just been selected by Reidel Glassware to show off their Chardonnay glasses, where Reidel described it as the Best New World White Wine they had ever tasted! - September 2011

Sorry all the 2002 is now gone. We have just moved onto the 2004. Yet again a spectacular Chardonnay as Coniglio is only produced in exceptional vintages. As always the grapes from the Riverview Vineyard - regarded as the finest vineyard in New Zealand - are hand selected and whole bunch pressed. The juice is then fermented and aged on the lees in new French oak. The wine is subsequently allowed to undergo some partial malolactic fermentation creating a bigger, rounder, fuller wine really integrating the oak. Simply stunning as always!

Presented in it's own gift box - the ideal gift for a white wine lover for xmas.

Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2011 - Gold Medal. Mercedes Benz Hakes Bay Wine Awards Gold Medal 2010, Decanter World Wine Awards Silver Medal 2011, International Wine Challenge Silver Medal 2011 amongst others!

Made from fruit from their Riverview vineyard, fermented in new French oak then aged for a further twelve months, again in French oak. This is a rich, full wine with intense fruit and a long dry finish. Another great wine in a different style to the White Label Chardonnay below. This Black Label is a little fuller and richer suited to richer foods, or to savour on it's own. We've just moved onto this 07 which is fantastic. In fact the fruit was so good that Morton's debated whether or not to make a Coniglio from this 2007. In the end they chose not to, so after 2004 they only made Coniglio again from the 2010 (not ready for release for quite some time of course!). So this Black Label 2007 is "a baby Coniglio" - almost as good but half the price. I highly recommend it at this price, it is a stunning wine.

Benegas Sangiovese 2008 75cl

Very limited. And a superb wine!

15% abv. Please don't be deterred from trying this wine because it's a Sangiovese that's not from Italy! This is a fantastic wine and is something special. 100% Sangiovese from 55 year old vines, with only 14500 bottles produced. Consultant winemaker Michel Rolland has worked his magic once again as he does with all the Benegas reds. This is a superb wine, big, warm and rounded, supremely smooth, structured and layered. Plenty of delicious fruit, well balanced and nowhere near as dry on the finish as traditional Italian Sangiovese. We thoroughly enjoyed this wine in our friend's Italian restaurant where we followed it with an Amarone Zenato and it stood up very well indeed. Highly recommended, have it with food. This wine has been on the Gaucho Grill wine list for a remarkable nine straight years!

Claymore 'Nirvana' Reserve Shiraz Clare Valley 2006 75cl

James Halliday - 94 Points

14.5% abv. This is Claymore's ultra premium wine. 100% Shiraz from Claymore's Penwortham vineyard at altitude. This is a big, powerful, savoury Shiraz full of complex flavours of dark chocolate and black fruits. Well balanced with good body added from 24 months in French oak, with a 'velvet' mouth feel. This is a big wine and needs 20 minutes breathing or decanting to open up to be fully appreciated. Intense fruit flavours with vanilla on the really long finish. Can be savoured on it's own but I thoroughly enjoyed it with a Chinese banquet. Superb wine, but very limited. We are the UK's only importer and we only have a very small quantity available. It really is worth splashing out a little extra and trying a bottle as a treat.

Robertson Number One Constitution Road Shiraz 2008

Michael Angelo Gold Medal for the 2007. The 2006 received John Platter 4.5 Stars. Decanter - Trophy for Best South African Rhone varietal over £10

Just moved onto the 2008 which I tasted last night in Carlo's, and I believe it's their best vintage yet. Fantastic wine.

14.5% abv. This is the flagship wine from this highly successful winery. Although it's now grown to be South Africa's third largest producer, this is because it's grower owned with a firm focus on producing quality wines at affordable prices. Platter describes this wine as 'Rich, powerful and alluring. Layers of ripe red berries, vanilla and cinnamon, sheathed in svelte harmonious fruit, and oak tannins (34 months in French and American oak). Bold, structured and poised'. I was tipped off about this wine by a colleague who was involved with the winery, and bought some on his recommendation. I'll be adding my tasting notes shortly although I can never be as clear and concise as Platter!

Took a bottle to Carlo's restaurant to pair it with a Welsh Black Tbone. It's fantastic. Big juicy fruit with a mouthfeel like velvet, silky smooth, lively acidity making it ideal with food. Great length too. Like a South African Amarone! This is a cracker!

Aresti Estates Family Collection Blend Rio Claro 2006 75cl

Grand Hyatt - Gold Medal 2010

Please note this is a library photo of the Carmenere. This blend has fantastic presentation - it looks similar but is in an even larger heavy weight bottle.

14.5%abv. Made up of 45% Syrah, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot. Made from hand picked grapes, aged for 18 months in French oak. This wine is a brand new release for Aresti and is the premium wine of the estate. It isn't even on their website yet. It's stunningly good! Purple colour with ruby hints, with a big nose. Intense fruit flavours on the palate balanced by the oak, with a little white pepper, and vanilla on the finish. It's very very smooth, full in the mouth with a very long finish. It also doesn't really need to breathe, it can be opened and enjoyed almost instantly - rare for such a big wine. It's very good indeed but also rare with limited availability.

The new stock has pretty much been and gone already! Just a few cases left.!

Morton Estates Black Label Pinot Noir 2007 75cl

Decanter Bronze Medal, IWC Bronze Medal. 86 points Bob Campbell.

The best fruit from their Stone Creek vineyard in Marlborough was harvested at the optimum time to produce this delicious wine. Fermented in stainless steel without wood ageing, to preserve the cherry fruit flavours and the slightly earthy notes from the terroir of the particular vineyard. A lovely full wine, smooth and lingering with soft tannins. Pair with light meats or poultry. I recently enjoyed a bottle in a very good local restaurant with John Coney. It was the ideal accompaniment to our duck leg starter and our Welsh lamb main course. This is a great food wine. Highly recommended.

Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show - Silver Medal. John Platter 4 Stars, Decanter Bronze Medal

Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. A superb Bordeaux blend with big rich fruit flavours, complexity and structure, very smooth and satisfying with great length. Specific parcels of grapes were identified and selected for this special wine from three separate vineyards, then harvested by hand. The different grapes were all vinified and aged separately for twelve months. The best barrels were then selected and blended, then returned to 50% new and 50% second fill French oak for a further four months. The resultant wine is fantastic. The Cabernet Sauvignon lends weight and structure while the Merlot adds rich red fruits and a softness in the mouth. Cabernet Franc brings delicious strong fruit flavours and mature tannins. The oak aging lends vanilla and cedar wood notes and softens the tannins. Already drinking well, this wine will cellar for at least ten years. Denise tells me Jean Daneel is a big fan of this wine, and he makes some of the best red blends in South Africa!

Bodega San Huberto Nina Petit Verdot 2004 75cl

Due to supplier increases and the weak pound, the 2005 vintage will be retailing above £20. So stock up on 2004 while you can.

14% abv. This is San Huberto's 'ultra premium wine' made from 100% Petit Verdot grapes, the unsung hero of fine red Bordeaux. The grapes are hand harvested then aged in barrique for 12 months with a further 12 months in bottle prior to release. Deep dark in colour with an inky appearance, with an intense nose of concentrated fruit. This is a complex structured wine with an array of different flavours. Strong fruit on the palate initially, gives way to a slight spice then gentle pepperiness and a hint of vanilla on the really long finish. The wine is exceptionally smooth, medium bodied with a silky mouth feel. It has great balance with just the right amount of mature tannins, acidity and alcohol. This is an exceptional wine. 14.3% abv. Only 6576 bottles produced. What a beautiful wine! Mundus Vini International Silver Medal.Tannat is originally from France but has now been successfully adopted by Argentina and Uruguay, producing some great full bodied powerful wines. Made from grapes from two vineyards of 35 year old vines and two of 10 year old. Low yielding, hand harvested grapes are vinified then aged in French and American oak for 10 to 12 months. The wine is big with intense flavour, slightly spicy, well structured with balanced acidity and sweet but firm tannins. As it's still young, it really benefits from being left to breathe. It needs 30 minutes but improves dramatically if you can leave it for 60 or even 90 minutes. Similar in style to an Amarone, but a little lighter, it's delicious with food. This wine is beautiful.

We've just moved onto the 06 which we happened to taste at a recent tasting in London and it is spectacular. It stood out as one of the very best wines at the show. My tasting notes say "magnificent". I believe it's even better than the 05.

Awards info pending, but the 2010 is superb so should be highly rated. John Platter 4 Stars for the 09

Zevenwacht Z Gewurztraminer Stellenbosch is produced in tiny quantities of only 1200 bottles per vintage. It's made from grapes from 25 year old vines, which underwent 'rigorous selection' before being picked by hand in the early hours of Saturday morning, March the 8th! Now that's what I call a hand crafted wine! I can't praise this wine enough. Zevenwacht describe it as 'sumptuously fragrant... beautiful mouthfeel....seductive mid palate and a lingering finish'. This really is an exceptional wine, and a real bargain at this price, but be quick it's extremely limited. It's gained popularity in SA and is hugely oversubscribed, so we now get an annual allowance from Denise of ony 15 cases of 6.

John Platter 4.5 Stars. Decanter - Gold Medal. The 2007 won Gold Medal Best in Class at the IWSC.

This is a great wine. Big rich buttery flavours on the palate initially, then the oak shows through on the finish. This is a full bodied, luscious wine which would be lovely to enjoy on it's own, but we also paired it with a cheese tasting we were doing, including a spicy chile cheese - Snowdonia Cheese Company's Red Devil - and it stood up to the heat and strong flavours really well. I've tasted a lot of Chardonnays but I can't recall any that balanced the fruit and the oak so superbly. Great length too. Highly recommended.

The fruit is tempered by the oak producing an elegant, balanced wine with a really long finish. Highly recommended.

More stock on it's way from Italy - if you want some of this wine you're highly advised to email to reserve it, as it's only available in tiny quantities and we struggle to keep up with demand!

Noa IGT Sicilia Cusumano 2006 75cl
Gambero Rosso 'Tre Bicchieri' 2008. IWSC Silver - Best in Class

The big brother to Sagana. This wine has also won a whole host of awards for previous vintages including Tre Bicchieri in 2000, 03, 04, IWSC - Gold 2001, IWC - Silver 2001, Decanter - 4 stars 2002, Winespectator 90 points 2002, Duelilavini - 5 Grappolis 2004, 02 to name only a few. 14%abv. 40% Nero d'Avola 30% Merlot 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are hand picked from separate vineyards, vinified and matured separately in small French oak casks prior to blending. The blend alters slightly each year to ensure they get the best out of the resulting wine. This is the flagship wine of the Cusumano estate and is absolutely beautiful. Fabulous flavours, full in the mouth with great acidity so it pairs beautifully with food. Simply magnificent.

Vigna Marziacanale DOC Irpinia 2005 Vinosia 75cl

Currently £26.50 at Harrods

14% abv. Made from 100% Aglianico by the famous wine making brothers, Mario & Luciano Ercolino. Truly stunning wine. As far as we know only available in the UK through ourselves or Harrods. We took a bottle to our friend's superb Italian restaurant to sample together, to make sure we weren't just being biassed. It was delicious, big powerful fruit balanced by strong alcohol and beautifully smooth tannins. Incredible length. But then, after our first glass, we consumed the rest with food and it was magnificent. I couldn't stop remarking at how the food kept refreshing the flavours. We waited three months for this wine to arrive from Italy and it was well worth it. When it finally arrived it was in bottles weighing 1.1 kg, even more empty than a normal bottle of wine when full! So the Ercolino brothers really value this wine to spend so much on the bottle! We only have a very limited amount available.

Eral Bravo YBS 2008 75cl

Just moved onto 08 - Argentine Wine Awards Silver Medal. The 2007 won Argentine Wine Awards Gold Medal and Decanter Bronze Medal, 2005 was awarded IWC 2007 - Gold Medal, Wines of Argentina 2007 - Gold Medal, Hyatt Best Wines - Gold Medal. What a wine for showcasing what Argentina can produce. YBS stands for Year's Barrel Selection, and is the personal selection of winery owner Matias Sanchez. It's a blend of the year's best three barrels, 60% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah, blended to perfection then barrel aged. The wine is big and powerful, wonderfully smooth, well balanced with a really long lingering finish. It's gaining a reputation in the Uk and demand is soon likely to outstrip supply.
