Sequerciani Organic Aleatico Passito 2016 375ml Sulphite free natural wine

Organically certified by ICEA and Demeter

A truly magnificent dessert wine! Aleatico is a grape native to Maremma.

Half the crop is harvested at perfect ripeness and the other half left on the vine to wilt to concentrate the natural sugars, the same system used in Germany with Auslese etc. The harvested crop is fermented with it's natural yeasts in stainless steel. After the wilted grapes are harvested and crushed the two wines are then blended and left to macerate in teracotta amphorae for four months. Nothing is added, nor is anything taken away. The wine is then bottled in the first half of March.

I love Reccioto, a high end red dessert wine from Veneto, and this to me is even better due to it's naturalness. Beautiful huge sweet flavours, yet pure and clean. This wine is very special indeed.

Total sulphites 12 mg/l (all naturally occurring of course) so it is fine for anybody even with a severe sulphite allergy.

"grapes, sun and earth - that's it"

Please note this is a haf bottle (375ml)

Gold - Veritas 2013

Top Dessert Wine - Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards 2013

Platter 4.5 Stars

This wine is something special - don't let the presentation fool you!

Delicious flavours - the Boplaas tasting notes below are very accurate. I got the candied citrus orange/peach//pineapple flavours. Good full body with weight on the palate, yet light and clean at the same time. Tremendous length, certainly 30 seconds plus on the finish. This is seriously good wine, and excellent value as this is a full 75cl (most premium dessert wines tend to be 500ml).

Text from Boplaas website:

Alcohol (%): 15.6 %

Maturation Potential: Drink now and next 30 years

Wood Aging: none

Vinification

Crafted from a patch of vines planted in 1979 by Boplaas patriarch Oupa Danie Nel, the Boplaas Heritage White Muscadel 2012 perfectly reflects the character of the gnarled low-yield Calitzdorp vines from which it is borne.

Tasting Notes

Intense citrus, candied pineapple, ginger honeysuckle and plump apricot greets the taster, while the palate is full and lengthy, yet lifted by bright acidity and rounded off with a spice notes.

Food suggestion

Deserving of careful cellaring over the next few decades and paired with traditional Cape Malay favourites, comforting Cantonese or simply chilled on its own. A mere 3300 bottles of the 2012 Novare SA Terroir Awards 2013 medal winner for the Klein Karoo region were bottled.

Boplaas Cape Chocolate 2012 375ml

Gold medal - Michelangelo International Wine Awards 2012

Due to a bilateral agreement between the EU and South Africa this wine is no longer permitted to be marketed as "port". It is however made from Portuguese varietals using traditional Portuguese methods and aged in Portuguese oak - just in South Africa not in Portugal!

Text from Boplaas below:

Wine of Origin: Western Cape

Cultivars: Tinta Barocca (70%) Touriga Nacional (30%)

Residual Sugar: 93.6 g/l

pH: 3.72

Total Acid: 5.1 g/l

Alcohol (%): 17.38 %

Maturation Potential:

Now - Next 20 years (exceptional drinking in 2 years). New trend under the young people is to drink Vintage Ports very young, but the Port can also last up to 20 years.

Once opened drink within a week.

Wood Aging:

Tinta Barocca was for 12 months in Portuguese Oak Barrels. No wood aging for the Touriga Nacional.

Vinification

Harvest the grapes at 26ºB with a yield of 6 ton/ha. Young Touriga Nacional Vines planted in ’97 and Old Tinta Barocca Vines planted in ’68. The grapes were crushed and fermented in an open fermenter with punch downs 24 hours a day. The wine is than fortified at 11ºB.

Tasting Notes

This is a dark, purplish black port with flavours of dark chocolate, plum and spices. This is a full-bodied port with big ripe tannins and integrated alcohol, with a long and luscious aftertaste.

Food suggestions:

This complex Port should be accompanied by a fine selection of cheeses, cured meats, nuts and dried fruits, and fine coffee and cigars. Chocolate is sensational with the Chocolate Port, as are dried fruits and nuts.

Winemaker’s notes:

Made in a Vintage style. The quality selection is better than Cape Vintage and almost as good as the Cape Vintage Reserve.

Please note this is a "half bottle" 375ml.

Top 100 SA Wines

Due to a bilateral agreement between the EU and South Africa this wine is no longer permitted to be marketed as "port" (despite the EU not keeping to their part of the agreement!). It is however made from Portuguese varietals using traditional Portuguese methods and aged in Portuguese oak - just in South Africa not in Portugal!

Text from Boplaas below:

Wine of Origin: Western Cape

Cultivars: 80% Touriga Nacional, 18% Tinta Barocca, 2% Souzão

Residual Sugar: 91.3 g/l

pH: 3.8

Total Acid: 5.6 g/l

Alcohol (%): 18.79 %

Maturation Potential: 30 years

Wood Aging: 24 months in Oak Barrels

Vinification

Harvest the grapes at 26ºB with a yield of 5 ton/ha. Young Touriga Nacional Vines and Old Tinta Barocca Vines planted in ’68.

Notes from the winemaker:

Best way to make world class ports is to learn form the best. That is why we learn from the best of Portugal and taste there ports frequently, from the old ports to the new styles as well. The other things is know your vineyards and use the best Portuguese varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Souzão that are suited for SA climate and soils.

Tasting Notes

The 2010 growing season was very dry and hot, perfect for Cape Vintage Port. The port is concentrated and viscous, dense dark fruit, with cassis and chocolate nuances on the palate. Flavours of cherries, plum, blackberries, and violets on the nose. Peppery and grip from firm yet ripe tannins with integrated spirit and a long and luscious aftertaste. Delicious now and have the potential to age and will gain additional complexity for years to come.

Food suggestions

This massively complex wine should be accompanied by a fine selection of cheeses, cured meats, nuts and dried fruits, and fine coffee and cigars. However, it can be paired with hearty traditional fare such as Karoo lamb pottjies, Springbok pie, Eland fillet and coq au vin substituting the chicken with Guinea fowl or Cape Francolin and using Touriga Naçional as the vin!

Boplaas Cape Ruby 75cl

Vitis ViniFere Awards - Gold medal 2014

Best Cape Ruby @ Cape Port and Wine Challenge 2014

A superb ruby full of fruit. Unlike mainstream ruby ports available in the UK, this is a hand crafted wine with gentle natural acidity. It is delicious, very smooth with no heartburn inducing rectified acidity and very little in the way of additives either, so no dreaded "port hangover" - so long as you don't drink the whole bottle in one go of course!

This is "ruby port" as it should be, not the mass produced plonk that floods the supermarkets at Christmas.

Give it a go, it is very good, and of course a gold medal winner.

Boplaas White Mucadel 2014 75cl

Another world class dessert wine. This is a little lighter in body than their Heritage White Muscadel, and a little fresher and crisper - or would you say not quite as viscous and luscious? You need to taste them back to back like I did to spot this difference though.

This wine is delicious and seriously good value for money - once again look past the presentation and concentrate on what is in the bottle. Beuatiful flavours, great balance, serious length. And only £14.99 for a 75cl bottle!

We don't have many and don't expect it to last past Christmas.

Text from Boplaas website:

Vintage: 2014

Wine of Origin: Calitzdorp

Cultivars: Muscadel

Residual Sugar: 217.2 g/l

pH: 3.52

Total Acid: 5.7 g/l

Maturation Potential: Now - Next 15 years

Wood Aging: None

Vinification:

Harvest the grapes at 28ºB with 6 ton/ha yield of 35 year old Muscadel vines.

Tasting Notes:

Rich gold color with delicate honeysuckle and jasmine bouquet. Lovely quencher with a block of ice and slice of lime in summer.

Food suggestions:

Served ice cold over crushed ice accompanied by a slice of lime and a few strawberries in a martini glass, while watching the sunset is a perfect way to end off the day. Alternatively served with desserts or served chilled with Indian and Thai curries.

4 star Platter Wine Guide

Tasting Notes

Dark red centre with pomegranate pink edge. Raspberry, tart cranberry, mulberry and rooibos tea intermingle with ripe Muscat and hints of spice greet the taster. The bouquet follows through onto the palate and is joined by Turkish delight, honeyed notes and more bright spice. The luscious palate is lifted with a zippy acidity and this is definitely one to lay down for a few years.

Best enjoyed well-chilled with traditional Cape Malay fare, exotic Asian cuisine, an array of desserts or as a mixer in cocktails. Careful cellaring over the next half decade or more will generously reward your patience.
