Gladstone Sauvignon Blanc 2014 75cl

Gold Medal TheFiftyBest.com April 2016

Silver Medal International Wine Challenge 2015

Gladstone is a fantastic boutique winery in Wairarapa in the Martinborough region, at the bottom of North Island up in the hills to the east of Wellington. Wairarapa is very possibly the biggest success story in "boutique New Zealand" in the last ten years, as it's soil and microclimate produce outstandlingly concentrated fruit. The wineries here are mainly family affairs producing great wines with real passion and flare.

Christine and David Kernohan - both originally from bonnie Scotland - have been making wine here since 1996. Minimal intervention is the key, letting the fruit do all the talking. Although it is coupled with expert dedicated winemaking of course. They are in conversion to organic, which is straight forward for them as they have always minimised additives and intervention anyway.

This Sauvignon from their flagship "Gladstone" range is fantastic. Extensively lees aged for body, complexity and longevity. It is full of tropical fruit yet with a real mineral streak on the back palate. It is very good indeed.

Gladstone Pinot Gris 2014 75cl

This is their flagship range Pinot Gris, not to be confused with their junior "Jealous Sisters" or "12000 miles" ranges. There are quite a few reviews and awards dotted about for the Jealous Sisters 2014 but I can't find any reviews for this wine as it is much more limited. It is very good however.

Clear and bright with legs sticking to the glass. Swirl it around and a lovely nose opens up. It has a full and creamy palate with rich citrus fruit flavours and a long finish.

The wine is very well made and the free SO2 has remained free so we advise anybody with a sulphite allergy to avoid it, but we highly recommend it to any Pinot Gris fans not super sensitive to sulphur.

Benegas Don Tiburcio 2013 75cl

As you're probably aware I have been a big fan of Federico Benegas's wines for a few years now. When the first vintage (2004) of his flagship Meritage landed in the UK, I tasted it and immeduiately bought the lot. Federico was delighted and asked to meet me so we met up in Londn for a bite to eat. He has since invited me out to Argentina to help him blend a vintage! However I think he has plenty of people with more skill and experience than me to help him - I will stick to just selling it!

"Don Tiburcio" was Federico's grandfather, the godfather of wine production in Mendoza in the late 19th century, and he has fittingly named this wine from his super premium range after him.

Text from Federico's website states:

Varietal composition:

50% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% PetitVerdot, 5% Merlot.

Grapes Origin:

Malbec: Finca La Encerrada, Gualtallary, Uco Valley. Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Merlot, Petit Verdot: Finca Libertad, Upper Bank of Mendoza River, Maipu

Harvest time:

Malbec: Last week of April. Cab Franc and Cab Sauv: 2nd fortnight of April. Merlot: End of March. Petit Verdot: 2nd fortnight of March

Winemaking process:

Cold pre-fermentative maceration. Tank fermentation at 25 C . Post fermentative maceration during two weeks. Racking and natural malolactic fermentation in the oak barrels with indigenous yeasts of second use.

Ageing:

Ten months in French oak barrels of 2nd use.

Tasting notes:

Colour: intense deep red colour with ruby hues

Nose:The complexity of the varietal composition of this wine shows in the nose aromas of red and black fruit, spices like white pepper, clove and cardamom. Herbal notes of eucalyptus, thyme and rosemary. The wood ageing rents notes of cocoa and vanilla.

Mouth:A wine with great presence since the entrance. It reaches all its volume with a high impact in the middle mouth, exhibiting round tannins as the result of the five varietals. Long and lingering finish with a slight herbaceous note in the end.

Ageing capacity :

10 years

This is the beautiful Bordeaux blend from their second tier range "Catalpa". Atamisque is a relatively new winery founded in 2007 by a French couple with family wine connections in Burgundy, aiming to produce exceptional wines in a natural manner. The winery was designed on a gravity feed system and all grapes are handpicked, two systems for minimising chemical intervention.

35% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot, 15% Malbec and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in Frencjh oak for 12 months and a further 12 months in bottle prior to release. It is a great wine and excellent value.

Marcello Pelleriti Coleccion Plata Malbec 2012 75cl

Marcello Pelleriti is one of Argentina's finest winemakers, in fact he is the only one to date to have received a 100 point rating from Robert Parker. But he isn't just an Argentine winemaker, he makes wines in Pomerol too, as the season in France is directly opposite that of Argentina. Sounds like a lot of hard work to me, jetting back and forth every six months!

His vineyards are in the Uco Valley district of Mendoza, one of the very best areas in all Argentina. He works traditionally without pesticides, all grapes hand harvested, then bunch sorted and even sorted by individual grape. The winery works on a gravity feed system, enabling him to make wines naturally with absolute minimal intervention and manipulation.

This Malbec is excellent and superb value for money.

Tapiz Las Notas de Jean Claude 2012 75cl

This is something very special!

A collaboration between Bodega Tapiz and Jean Claude Berrouet, winemaker at Chateau Petrus for 25 years (1982 -2007). Jean Claude is regarded as one of the finest winemakers the world has ever known, and a world leader with Merlot. Under his direction Chateau Petrus became one of the most expensive and sought after wines in the world.

It comes as no surprise then to find this blend is heavily dominated by Merlot. I've copied the Tapiz wine information below. I tasted it at Barrulo and was really impressed. This is a stunning wine, very silky and elegant. It was late on at the show by the time I tasted it so I didn't even attempt to make my own tasting notes by that stage, so be guided by the official ones below. But trust me, this is something very special from Argentina!

VARIETAL COMPOSITION

91% Merlot

3.5% Petit Verdot

3.0% Cabernet Sauvignon

2.5% Cabernet Franc

ORIGIN

Single Vineyard from San Pablo Estate, Uco Valley, Mendoza

VINEYARD

San Pablo Estate

ALTITUDE : 4430 feet (1350 meters) above sea level

FEATURES : Characterized by cold nights due to the proximity of the mountains and altitude, it gives wines of great intensity in color, aroma and structure, destined for premium and aged wines.

FERMENTATION PROCESS

Fermented in stainless steel tanks for approximately 12 days at 28ºC. Use of selected yeasts.

100% malolactic fermentation

TASTING NOTES

This specimen expresses the maximum intensity on the nose, finesse, elegance and harmony generated by our terroir . On the nose: notes of fresh red fruits, raspberries, cassis and truffles accompanied by delicate spicy hints. Its oak aging brings aromas of coffee and chocolate amalgamated with fruity notes typical of this varietal of San Pablo Estate . The palate is intense, with sweet and elegant tannins . A long finish , hard to forget. A wine that represents the art of precision from the vineyard to the glass.

Herederos 1808 Valcavada Semi Crianza D.O.C. Rioja 2014 75cl
A fantastic new wine from this superb boutique winery in Rioja.

As it is so new, no images exist of it yet - I took this image on my phone and cropped it.

The wine itself is beautiful. Plenty of body, super smooth and integrated as all Herederos's wines are. Like their other wines it is low in sulphites and additives as they farm biodynamically and use absolute minimal additives or manipulation.

Great value. We predict this will be a big seller.

Valtonar Crianza D.O. Ribera del Duero 2010 75cl
Valtonar is an excellent small family winery run by the father and his two sons, although one of them only works there part time. They own 30 hectares consisting of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. They farm organically but refuse to go for certification, as it is expensive and they don't believe they should have to pay to make wine properly - and I fully agree with them, as EU Organic certification rules are very lax and it's no longer a guarantee of a natural healthy wine.

They harvest everything by hand and ferment the grapes with only their natural yeasts. They don't filter the wine either, instead they move the barrels outside overnight where the drop in temperature clarifies the wine through a natural process. They make wine traditionally and use virtually no additives.

97% Tempranillo & 3% Cabernet Sauvingon, aged 14 months in French oak barrels. Here are Valtonar's tasting notes:

"This wine is made with Tempranillo vines situated around Anguix, Roa and Pedrosa de Duero, in the heart of Ribera del Duero. Dark cherry red with garnet highlights. Intense dark fruit aroma (wild blackberries, blueberry jam) with smoky and roasted (coffee) notes against a wonderfully elegant oaky backdrop. A serious wine with juicy tannins, velvety and round thanks to the perfume of oak aging (dried plums)."

My tasting notes say:

Very deep ruby, almost opaque. A nose of fruit, cream and vanilla. Lovely big black fruits on the palate. It's a big wine, full bodied and smooth with a savoury finish.

My tasting notes from some months ago state:

Deep ruby in colour with big legs. Black fruit with some vanilla. Soft mouthfeel like "dusty plums", very smooth and balanced.

La Selva Organic Tinsvil Spumante Brut 75cl

Organically certified by ICEA, Naturland and NOP

This is a new wine for us from La Selva. It's a "blanc de noir" - a white sparkling wine made from the red Sangiovese grape. We love their still Sangiovese Bianco and it sells realy well for us. We expect this to do similar. Obviously, like all their wines, it's fully organic and extremely low in sulphites (just 8mg/l free SO2). Below is text from their website.

Taste:

Balanced and elegant, beautiful liveliness, dynamic, complex and creamy, fine and persistent, driven by a good perlage , with pleasant floral note and yellow fruits , bread crust and almonds , good flavor and freshness.

Fermentation:

At low temperature, vinificated in steel tank.

Aging:

6 months "sur lies" and at least 3 months in bottle before release.

I'm delighted to announce we have the latest vintage just arrived. It is full and buttery with good fruit. Well structured and somehow fresher and cleaner than ever. I was so impressed by the clean feel of this wine (which is difficult to achieve in a barrel fermented white) that I asked Denise if she had a new winemaker. No, she hasn't. But she did say it was fruit from a new vineyard.

I know the first vintage 2012 was from a new vineyard back then, so I presume she may have planted at least two and is only now beginning to use fruit from the second one. Either way this is a great wine, and anybody who likes barrel fermented chardonnays is going to be impressed at this price.

No awards as yet with it being new, but I personally rate this wine highly.

Sauvignon Blanc Collio DOC Livon 2014 Linea Classica 75cl

This is a fantastic sauvignon from the excellent Livon winery. The region of Friuli produces some of Italy's best white wines, in a very fresh, cooler climate style, and this sauvignon is no exception. Coming from the Collio hills DOC at an altitude 250m which borders Slovenia.

Very pale in colour with green and gold highlights. Legs sticking to the side of the glass showing some body. Lovely big green fruit flavours with good acidity cleansing the palate. It's deliciously crisp and refreshing, very clean and natural in style with only minimal additives.

For anybody who hasn't discovered Friulan white wines I highly recommend trying this. "New world fruit with old world heritage!".

Friulano Collio DOC Livon 2014 Linea Classica 75cl

Friulano is the local name for the grape which is also called "sauvignon vert" in other regions. No surprise then that this wine is similar in style to their Sauvignon Blanc being clear, almost waterlike in appearance. Again good body. More subtle flavours, more like a hybrid of their excellent Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc. Again very clean and natural, wine made properly by a passionate producer, so you know you are drinking a wine which is healthy and good for you.

Vey well balanced natural acidity and a long clean finish. I think this wine would be very well received by fans of good Chablis and similar quality old world dry whites.

Cara Sur Bonarda Sebastian Zuccardi 2015 75cl

A superb wine from Sebastian Zuccardi and friends. No awards yet for this vintage but previous vintages have scored 93 points from several top critics, and for me personally this is one of the most exciting wines I've discovered this year. I tasted it at the London Wine Fair and it was the standout wine of the show for me.

It's very small production, only around 2000 bottles! And that is a significant increase on the previous 2014 vintage which was just 600 bottles. Fortunately the Zuccardi family are very successful so they can fund this kind of perfectionist winemaking without needing to make it pay for itself.

Produced at Barreal in Calingasta Valley, Province of San Juan, Mendoza, at 1500 metres. Clearly this is a special vineyard site, planted with 50 year old Bonarda vines, so I'm not surprised it has produced such a superb pure wine.

As our regulars will know, we are all about purity, minimal intervention and absolute minimal additives in our wines. This wine was fermented in concrete eggs, roughly the size of a man, which allow the wine to "be stirred" by the gravitational pull of the moon. We've seen the same system used by Boekenhoutskloof to make their ultimate wine "the Journeyman". It's an expensive technique of course only used by really passionate winemakers seeking to produce exceptional wines. Only the grapes' own natural yeasts were used too.

I didn't make any notes! But it is a beautiful, natural tasting wine, medium bodied and silky smooth. Fruit and pepper, wonderful balance, natural acidity. This is classy winemaking and this wine will keep for decades. But it is already drinking now. It would be fascinating to lay a few cases down and see how it develops over the years.

As this wine is young it is still tight of course so needs aerating or decanting. Give it an hour in a decanter and it opens up and changes quite dramatically, with the fruit showing and the texture becoming velvet-like. It doesn't have huge tannins though so once it peaks enjoy it, rather than leaving to aerate for too long.

Gambero Rosso 2017- Tre Bicchieri for this 2014

Gambero Rosso - Tre Bicchieri for 2013

Just moved onto the 2014.

What a great find this was at Vinitaly! I've been a fan of Livon wines from the far north eastern Friuli region but I didn't know they owned a boutique winery in Tuscany! So at the end of a long day when they sat me down to a tasting - a seat is really hard to find at Vinitaly! - then brought out a selection of their delicious crisp whites and a platter of sausage and cheeses, I thought it couldn't get any better. Then, wow! Two superb Chiantis.

This Classico was awarded Gambero Rosso's highest award of Tre Bicchieri - very rare for a red retailing at only £13.99.

95% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo. Made from handpicked grapes, fermented in wood. It's got a bit of spice to it, plus plenty of fruit. Very very smooth with good acidity cleansing the palate. This is excellent wine and superb value!

Vini D'Italia 2 Glasses

Vinibuoni D'Italia 2016: 2 Stars

100% Sangiovese matured in wood for 12 months. This is very good wine with plenty of flavour. 2012 was an unusual year in this region with very little rainfall which resulted in the early ripening of the grapes and the earliest harvest of Sangiovese in memory. The grapes had plenty of natural sugars of course but Celli have balanced the wine with great integration of wood and tannins.

Celli are actually a bit further east in Emilia Romagna but we have included them in Tuscany as we have no Emilia Romagna section, and of course they are working with Sangiovese.

Badia di Morrona Bianco dei Poggi IGT Toscana 2014 75cl

Badia di Morrona is a small estate owned by the Gaslini Alberti family, a highly passionate producer focussing on quality. Their holdings are reasonably large by our standards, around 1500 acres with a little under 300 planted with vines, around half being Sangiovese. The rest is olive groves and farmland. They have restored the old farmhouses for guests and have a restaurant and even a monastery dating back to the eleventh century.

Their wines are well made blending both traditional methods and state of the art technology. They are great quality at affordable prices. Their dedication to producing high quality wines is earning them a reputation and they've been hotly tipped as a winery to watch out for in the near future.

This is a blend of Vermentino, Trebbiano and Chardonnay, fermented in stainless steel for freshness. It's fairly full and round in the mouth with floral and citrus notes. It's a great summer wine, particularly to enjoy with food. Good value.

This Rosso is a blend of 85% Sangiovese and some unstated grapes, fermented in stainless steel for freshness. It's soft, round and smooth with berry flavours. Very easy drinking and particularly suited to Italian cuisine of course.

Ideal to partner with a bit of cold meat and cheeses.

Cristina Menicocci Biodynamic NAS Stamnos 75cl Sulphite free natural wine

A "no added sulphur wine" from this tiny family winery. Claudio founded the business in 1970 and now helps his daughter Cristina run the daily operations while she is also training to be a vet. His son, Fabrizio, handles the marketing, and mother Maria lends a hand everywhere else. They draft in a bit of extra labour at harvest time as they have 30 hectares of vineyards in the Cimini mountains north of Rome, surrounded by a further 25 hectares of olives, hazelnut trees and natural forest.

In 1987 they converted to organic farming and winemaking. They use no chemicals whatsoever and are certified Biodynamic by Demeter. Cristina takes it a step further and the whole winery is built around a natural philosophy, with the wines being certified Vegan, and the land around the vineyards given over to nature and the animals. They practice sustainable agriculture and sustainable living in general. And of course there is no added sulphur in the wines either.

This "Stamnos" is 100% Merlot. Soft, fruity and lovely with flavours of red fruits on the palate. I picked up an almond/hazelnut taste on the finish which I found really pleasant. Is it coincidence that Cristina has a hazelnut orchard on the edge of the vineyards?

This is a very nice sulphite free wine.

Angulo Innocenti Malbec 2013 75cl

A small family winery in La Consulta, Uco Valley, Mendoza. Pedro Angulo moved to Argentina from the Basque country in the 19th century where he met and married Angel Innocenti, an immigrant from Tuscany. They married and started farming grapes. The winery is still going today operated by their great grandchildren Mariano and Maria Innocenti.

Deep ruby in colour. Red fruit on the nose, with subtle legs. Big typical Malbec flavours of red fruits and spice with subtle oak on the finish. It's on the sweeter side having so much natural sugar in the grapes. Smooth and medium bodied. It's not a big hitter like so many Argentine Malbecs, more of a food wine.
