Sequerciani Organic Libello 2016 75cl Sulphite free natural wine

Organically certified by ICEA and Demeter

A beautiful wine from this amazing tiny natural wine producer! Paolo helped me out on this price-wise which I'm passing on to our customers. This is great wine and should be a lot more expensive!

80% Sangiovese is blended with 20% Ciliegiolo and both are fermented wih only the grapes' natural yeasts. The wine is left to macerate on the skins for four months in concrete tanks and teracotta amphorae. No sulphites or any other additive is used, nor is anything taken away by fining of filtering - as Sequerciani's tag line states " grapes, sun and earth - that's it"!

The wine is full and silky, with big red fruit flavours with a slightly nutty finish. Very natural in style (obviously) and a long finish. It's fantastic either on it's own or with virtually any Tuscan food - please try a bottle to get our sales up and running and help Sequerciani get their wines to the UK market. They literally make about 10,000 bottles per year in total, all completely by hand of course with real passion and dedication to organic natural production. I predict this wine in particular will be a massive hit for us.

Sequerciani Organic Foglia Tonda 2015 75cl Sulphite free natural wine

Organically certified by ICEA and Demeter

Foglia Tonda is an old Tuscan grape dating back to the 1800s. Similar to Sangiovese, although later ripening, but producing significantly more grapes per plant, hence Sequerciani crop the plants back dramatically in July leaving only the best bunches to ripen.

Everything is done by hand of course. They do an early selective first pick (as you can't leave ripe grapes on the vine or they start fermenting) before the main harvest. The grapes are then fermented using their own natural yeasts in large tubs for seven days, then the must is separated with part aged in teracotta amphorae, the rest in oak barrels. The wine is then blended and bottled, then further bottle aged for 6 months prior to release.

It's a rich flavoursome wine, soft mouthfeel with a little spice, blackberry flavours and some vanilla on the finish - to me it was very much like good Aglianico. Again completely natural with nothing added and nothing taken away.

Sequerciani Organic Pugnitello 2015 75cl Sulphite free natural wine

Organically certified by ICEA and Demeter

Pugnitello is also an old Tuscan grape that was thought to have disappeared. Now a handful of dedicated small producers (half a dozen) grow a tiny amount as it isn't really commercially viable being a low yielding grape. However it is also very thick skinned protecting it from pests which makes it particularly suited to biodynamic farming, so the Pugnitello which is available tends to be all natural wines. Our Pugnitello from La Selva is a beauty as is this wine.

This wine is something special. Big, full flavoured and super smooth. Initial fruit then a more savoury note comes through on the very long finish. This is a very classy wine.

Sequerciani Organic Aleatico Passito 2016 375ml Sulphite free natural wine

Organically certified by ICEA and Demeter

A truly magnificent dessert wine! Aleatico is a grape native to Maremma.

Half the crop is harvested at perfect ripeness and the other half left on the vine to wilt to concentrate the natural sugars, the same system used in Germany with Auslese etc. The harvested crop is fermented with it's natural yeasts in stainless steel. After the wilted grapes are harvested and crushed the two wines are then blended and left to macerate in teracotta amphorae for four months. Nothing is added, nor is anything taken away. The wine is then bottled in the first half of March.

I love Reccioto, a high end red dessert wine from Veneto, and this to me is even better due to it's naturalness. Beautiful huge sweet flavours, yet pure and clean. This wine is very special indeed.

Total sulphites 12 mg/l (all naturally occurring of course) so it is fine for anybody even with a severe sulphite allergy.

"grapes, sun and earth - that's it"

Sequerciani Organic Vermentino 2016 75cl Sulphite free natural wine

Organically certified by ICEA and Demeter

We had to wait for this to be bottled - they make just 600 bottles per year! Naturally it's all hand picked and the grapes are femented with their own natural yeasts only.

It's a beauty but please note it is a natural unfiltered white wine, so nothing like mass produced wines. It will be cloudy as it was neither fined nor filtered - that isn't a fault, that is the natural goodness from the grapes left in there. If you don't want a natural white please don't order this wine as it is supremely rare and we want it to go to people who appreciate this style.

Some of the grapes were fermented in teracotta amphorae, while some were fermented in stainless steel then transferred to barrel to age. The wine was then bottle matured for a further two months before release.

Big powerful fruit flavours with a long nutty finish. I loved it!

Tokara Reserve Stellenbosch Chardonnay 2014 75cl

93 Points Tim Atkin

91 Points Stephen Tanzer

Tokara is a large high profile winery on the Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and Franschoek. Miles Mossop is their winemaker, and very talented and well respected he is too. Although Karl Lambour formerly of Grande Provence has recently moved there in a managerial role. No doubt he will have some influence in their future winemaking, particularly for their Chardonnays.

Tokara make some larger volume wines by our standards but I was impressed by their Reserve range so we have chosen to list some.

This Chardonnay impressed me. I found it hugely round with some citrus and pineapple flavours, and some almond on the finish.

Cape Chamonix is a quality winery on the eastern slopes of the Franschoek Valley. They do delicious platters and have a lovely tasting room with outside seating and very friendly staff. They make some good wines too.

This is a great Bordeaux Blend. New world fruit with a slight heat typical of top SA reds. Very smooth with a long finish. Well worthy of it's five star rating in my opinion.

I had to taste this as it was awarded Plater 5 Stars which usually goes to less than 100 wines per year out of over 10,000 tasted.

It's pale gold in colour. Rich and buttery with some citrus on the long finish. Good wine.

They don't offer this wine for public tasting, but being trade I was able to taste a large glass while we ate a platter of cold meats and cheeses in a balmy 30 degress. And I'm delighted I did. While the standard Chardonnay also received five stars, to me this wine is in a different league altogether.

Gold in colour, full mouthfeel with big concentrated fruit flavours. Very well integrated oak. It's classical in style with all the elements in harmony, not overpowering as some barrel matured Chardonnays can be. For me personally this knocks the socks off Jordans Nine Yards.

The Grande Provence 2014 75cl

Platter 4 Stars

"Grapes for the TGP are hand harvested from vineyards overlooking the Grand Provence Estate. The well drained, decomposed sandstone soil is ideal for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. Special vinification methods are used to obtain low vigour, slow ripening grapes, perfect building blocks for this iconic Bordeaux-style blend.

A perfectly balanced, full-bodied and multi-dimensional red-style blend. The nose and palate are made up of layers of plum, mint, dark chocolate, spice and cigar box aromas. The mouth feel is soft, well rounded with an elegant and lingering finish.

Merlot 70%, Malbec 10%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%, barrel aged for 36 months in small French, first-fill barrels. It is important to let the wine breath for 1-2 hours. Enjoy now or cellar for 5-7 years".

Grande Provence Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 75cl

Platter 3.5 Stars

Yet another fabulous vintage. Made from Franschoek fruit. This is another example of the Platter ratings being unreliable. This wine certainly deserves at least 4 Stars in my opinion.

The wine has some caramel on the nose which comes through on the palate with the plum and berry flavours. It's well balanced, round and full in the mouth, with strong concentrated flavours and a long finish. Grande Provence say there is a hint of mint on the finish which has always been a hallmark of their Cabernet, although I personally didn't record this in my tasting notes, although when tasting a lot of wines one after another it is not easy to get every detail right. I look forward to retasting it in the UK and making some more detailed notes.

The image is not correct, we still have the older presentation on this 2012.

Rainbow's End Chenin Blanc Stellenbosch 2016 75cl

A brand new wine from Anton who, as a new up and coming winery, has been making some of the best reds in Stellenbosch for the last few years. In fact he has a remarkable 4 wines nominated for Platter's highest rating of 5 stars this year! Usually only about 60 wines out of over 10,000 achieve 5 stars!

Ths wine is so new it isn't even on his webste yet. Apologies for the amateur photo. As it's a brand new wine I had to take this myself on my phone! It looks much better in real life with a classy high quality paper label and quality heavy weight bottle.

Bright and clear in the glass. Big round and full on the palate with lovely flavours. Plenty of body and a long lingering finish. This wine is low in additives, made properly with passion and expertise. It's a long way from the mass produced Chenins found in the UK. Bags of flavour, full and mouthfilling yet clean and fresh on the finish. This is very good wine and I'd heartily recommend it, particularly for any Chardonnay fans to try .

The Grande Provence White 2015 75cl

Platter 4 Stars

"56% Chenin Blanc from 32 year old vines, hand harvested and gently pressed is then fermented in old large French oak barrels for 1 year. 44% Viognier from high on the slopes of the Franschhoek mountains is whole bunch pressed and aged in new and older French Oak barriques for one year. Perfectly blended to create a sublime blend of two classic varieties".

This wine is beautiful. Big, rich and full bodied. Round on the palate with concentrated flavours and a creamy mouthfeel with a very long finish.

This wine is made in tiny quantites so availability is extremely limited to just a few cases for the UK market.

The Grande Provence Amphora Chenin 2015 75cl

Platter 4.5 Stars

"There something to be said about following in the footsteps of ancient Greek and Roman winemakers who embraced this “technology” thousands of years ago, using clay hewn out of the earth to cradle and nurture a living liquid. The journey of the Grande Provence Amphora wine began when the winemaker decided to import two 400 litre clay amphorae from Manetti Gusmano and Figli from Florence, Italy, with seven generations of experience in crafting their superb vessels. A small block of really old Chenin Blanc (34 years old) in Franschhoek were selected and only the very best yellow, sun-exposed bunches were picked to maximise the health, flavour and aromatic expression of the wine. The grapes were de-stemmed by hand, left to ferment naturally on skins and remained topped in the clay amphorae for 7 months, without sulphur.

The wine is a blend of mostly Chenin Blanc, from one of the oldest blocks in Franschhoek and a touch of Muscat D’ Alexandrie. Pressed Viognier skins were also added to the blend for added texture. The wine was racked, fined and settled for a month in an old 500 litre barrel before bottling.

The wine is fresh and extremely aromatic. Upfront flavours of mandarin and citrus on the nose that carries through beautifully onto the palate, complemented by hints of perfume from the Viognier. An elegant and complex wine with integrated layers of differential textures. Serve slightly chilled.

We understand now that tannins from seeds and skins help preserve the wine naturally. We know that using vessels made from clay allows the wine to “breathe” during ageing therefore needing less sulphur for stability. With careful winemaking and allowing the fruit to express site authenticity, this wine is full of fruit purity and intense aromatics.".

A stunning "natural" wine fermented with it's own native yeasts then left on the lees in the clay amphora for seven months. As a huge fan of natural wines I believe you can really taste the life in this wine! Full bodied with intense flvours and a slightly nutty finish. I pleaded with Suzanne not to let the winemaker add any sulphites at bottling as I felt the wine didn't need it, but they couldn't take the risk, so a very small amount was added. The amounts are very low though so this wine is fine even if you have sulphite allergy.

Grande Provence only made 600 bottles, and as you can imagine from the description it is time consuming and expensive to produce, so availability is extremely limited. I have literally 36 bottles for the UK market and thisat £40 is at a subsidised price!

Beautiful wine! And in my opinion this is the best vintage yet.

The secret to making great Sauvignon Blanc in Franschoek? Use coastal fruit. The fruit for this wine was all sourced from Durbanville and the Coastal Region up above Cape Town where the Atlantic winds create big temperature differences between night and day, which is perfect for cool climate varieties like Sauvignon.

Great fruit with that typical Sauvignon nose. Green fruit yet soft in the mouth with full body - I suspect some lees ageing. Very clean and crisp with a very long lingering finish. This is perhaps the finest SA Sauvignon I have tasted.

Grande Provence Viognier & Chenin Blanc 2016 75cl

Platter 4 Stars

"Our Chenin Blanc is harvested from 30 year old vineyards in the Franschhoek area. Grapes were picked early morning during February and displayed concentrated fruity flavors. The Viognier, from the same area was harvested early March after a slower ripening period and at a slightly higher balling, to ensure that these delicate grapes keep their unique flavor during the winemaking process.

This unwooded, white wine has an elegant nose of peach, flowers and perfume. The palate displays layers of fruit flavors including dried apricot, apple and ripe pear. A well balanced blend where the tropical aromas of Chenin Blanc and the floral notes of Viognier come together to create a fantastic tasting experience."

I found it very fresh, delicate and aromatic with some citrus undertones. Acidity is kept in check and it's not too dry on the finish making it a very easy drinking pleasant wine suited to almost any occassion whether enjoying with food or just to sip on a sunny afternoon. Not too strong at 12% either.

Grande Provence Chardonnay 2015 75cl

Gold - The Sommeliers Selection Awards

Platter 4 Stars

A long time favourite of mine. The grapes for this wine come from the best vineyard in Franschoek for Chardonnay at Robertsvlei above the dam, which has lowered the overall temperature allowing Grande Provence to produce the best Chardonnay in Franschoek (in my opinion).

I went to Chamonix before my meeting at GP where I tasted their Platter 5 Star Chardonnay 2015 which was very good. I also, being trade, was able to taste their Reserve Chardonnay 2015 which aslo got 5 stars from Platter. This wine was excellent. However they both paled in my opinion compared to this one from Grande Provence which just seemd to have more layers and more complexity. Here at GP's notes:

"The Chardonnay grapes come from the valley of Robertsvlei in Franschhoek, known for its cooler climate and ideal for the cultivation of this prestigious variety. Open canopies allow for lots of sunshine supported by moderate rainfall. A longer ripening period resulted in grapes filled with concentrated fruit flavours.

An elegant, full bodied wine with outstanding fruit and wood integration. Experience citrus, almonds and creamy flavours on the nose and palate, with nuances of vanilla. The wine has a soft and well balanced mouth feel with an elegant, lingering finish.

Matured for 11 months in 60% first fill and 40% second fill, French oak barrels. Enjoy this wine now or mature for 2-3 years from vintage".

Personally I think this wine will improve with some bottle age over the next few years.

Grande Provence Rose 2016 75cl

A stunningly good new wine! Obviously as this is the first ever release there are no awards but it certainly deserves some.

Beautiful pale copper in colour. It's full and round in the mouth with bags of flavour. Crisp natural integrated acidity so it finishes clean and dry with a long finish. This is very good wine. Grande Provence's notes state:

"Made from free run juice from our very best Merlot and Cabernet grapes with the merest hint of blush from minimal skin contact. The juice was settled and cold fermented to capture the ripe and vibrant fruitiness of the two varieties. This wine is aged in tank for a brief duration of 6 months to allow for harmony between the components and then bottled early to present a fresh, fruit forward wine.

A pale pink, delicately fruity wine with nuances of apple and fresh berries with a dry and crisp finish. Perfectly balanced, this is a wonderful quaffing wine for a warm summer`s day".

Rainbow's End Rose Stellenbosch 2016 75cl

This is Anton's brand new Rose - please excuse the photo it isn't entirely accurate, as no photos exist yet. This wine is a beautiful pale copper in colour, very similar in appearance and style to good Cotes du Provence - it is beautiful!

On our recent trip to the Cape Anton had invited us up for a braai on the Sunday. We had the daughter and her friend with us. Anton's partner is a well known food blogger and chef in SA known as "the kitchen vixen" so we knew we were in for a treat. Anton, being a South African man, was in charge of the meat of course and the Kitchen Vixen rustled up some stunning starters and side dishes.

It was a hot day so naturally I was looking forward to a glass or two of Anton's Chenin Blanc which is one of my very favourite white wines. However he produced this new Rose which I hadn't even heard about, and it was superb. Great flavour, very natural and fresh in style. I stayed on it while the girls all had the Chenin, and we whiled away a few hours on the stoop with the occassional dip in the pool to cool down. Naturally I had to have some Family Reserve (2013) Red Blend with the braai, and that was just sensational too. But I was very impressed with this Rose. It's rare to find one so delicious, fresh and low in additives, so I heartily recommend you try it. In my opinion it is worth more than £8.99 but we want to pass on Anton's good price and get it out to our customers for this summer.

Famiglia Cielo 1908 Appassionatamente 2015 75cl

According to their website, Famiglia Cielo was founded in 1908 when great grandpa Giovanni fell in love with a small estate overlooking the Romeo and Juliet castles in the Berici Hills in Veneto.

They produce several ranges of wines including Prosecco. This is their premium wine of which they are very proud.

Text from their website states:

"Passionately with our vine growers we have created a great venetian red, masterful blend of our territory and winemaking expertise"

Colour: Intense red with garnet

Bouquet: full and fragrant with typical hints of ripe red fruit and light spicy notes

Taste: full, large and round, with ripe red fruit notes

It's a blend of Merlot, Corvina and Sangiovese, presented in a big heavy weight bottle. It's a lovely wine and wouldn't look out of place at £20 so for £11.99 it is a bargain!

Marcelo Pelleriti Cuvee Especial 2012 75cl

Marcello Pelleriti is one of Argentina's finest winemakers, in fact he is the only one to date to have received a 100 point rating from Robert Parker. But he isn't just an Argentine winemaker, he makes wines in Pomerol too, as the season in France is directly opposite that of Argentina.

His vineyards are in the Uco Valley district of Mendoza, one of the very best areas in all Argentina. He works traditionally without pesticides, all grapes hand harvested, then bunch sorted and even sorted by individual grape. The winery works on a gravity feed system, enabling him to make wines naturally with absolute minimal intervention and manipulation.

This is a blend he produced for Gaucho Restaurants so it's composition is secret and it isn't even on his website. We've been offered some at a good price and as it's excellent wine we've bought some. In Pomerol Marcelo works mainly with Merlot and indeed at the vineyards of Chateau La Violette where he scored 100 points from Parker for the 2010, they grow only Merlot. I suspect this wine is Merlot based with some Malbec and Cabernet Franc but I don't know for sure!

It's very deep ruby in colour with a nose of black cherry and coffee. It has mid weight on the palate with soft natural acidity. It is incredibly smooth, very natural in style. Flavours of coffee, black cherry and dark chocolate with a long lingering finish.

Very rare opportunity to get some of this wine at a great price.

Undurraga Aliwen Reserva Pinot Noir 2015 75cl

Vina Undurraga is a fairly big quality winery dating back to 1885, now practicing sustainable farming. They make different tiers of wines including some single vineyard offerings. In general they tend to be good quality and fairly low in sulphites for factory produced wines. We have selected some of their Reserva and Gran Reserva wines which we feel are good value.

This Pinot Noir is from their Reserva "Aliwen" range.

Pale ruby with a cherry nose. Very soft and fruity in the mouth with light oak. It's light and silky and very enjoyable. Certainly one of the best quality to price Chilean Pinots I've discovered.

60% Lomas de Leyda Estate, Leyda Valley,40% Codigua and Santa Ana Estates, coastal area of the Maipo Valley.

After a rigorous selection process, the clusters were destemmed and the grapes were delicately crushed.

Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of between 25oC and 27oC for 5-7 days. The wine remained in contact with the grape skins for an additional 5 days after the fermentation was complete.

Aging: The malolactic fermentation took place in second- and third-use French and American oak barrels, in which the wine was aged for six months.

Undurraga Sibaris Gran Reserva Pinot Noir 2014 75cl

Vina Undurraga is a fairly big quality winery dating back to 1885, now practicing sustainable farming. They make different tiers of wines including some single vineyard offerings. In general they tend to be good quality and fairly low in sulphites for factory produced wines. We have selected some of their Reserva and Gran Reserva wines which we feel are good value.

This single vineyard Pinot Noir is from their Gran Reserva "Sibaris" range, and comes from the Leyda Valley.

Deep ruby in colour with good legs and a dusty nose. Big raspberry and cherry fruit which isn't overpowered by the oak. In fact it has fairly light body for a Gran Reserva. It's very smooth with good acidity, all components of the wine in perfect balance which is not necessarily common with Chilean Gran Reserva wines. Very good wine for the price, and my favourite of their Sibaris range.

The grapes were hand-harvested into 12-kilo bins. The clusters and individual grapes were sorted on selection tables. The grapes were then gravity-fed into the vat where the fermentation was to take place. The grapes were destemmed and gently crushed and then underwent a cold pre-fermentative maceration at 7°C for 3 to 5 days.

Fermentation: The temperature was increased to 15°C and selected yeasts were injected into the must to provoke fermentation at a temperature of between 24°C and 26°C for a period of 5 - 7 days. Punching down and smooth pump-overs were used each day to gently submerge the skins in the fermenting juice in order to extract colour and volume. Once the alcoholic fermentation was complete, a post-fermentative maceration took place for a period of between 3 and 10 days. Then the wine was matured in oak The soils are of granitic origin and contain varying amounts of clay. The vineyards are situated on gente slopes with differing levels of exposure.

The vineyard is situated just 13km in a direct line from the sea, so the climate is significantly influenced bye the Pacific Ocean. During the ripening period, the mornings are often damp and the afternoons and evenings are cool with moderate maximum temperatures. This helps ensure slow ripening, safeguarding the fruit's aromas and flavours and the resulting wines are particularly fresh.

Undurraga Sibaris Gran Reserva Carmenere 2014 75cl

Vina Undurraga is a fairly big quality winery dating back to 1885, now practicing sustainable farming. They make different tiers of wines including some single vineyard offerings. In general they tend to be good quality and fairly low in sulphites for factory produced wines. We have selected some of their Reserva and Gran Reserva wines which we feel are good value.

This Carmenere is from their Gran Reserva "Sibaris" range, and comes from the Colchagua Valley.

The grapes were hand-harvested. Then they were destemmed and gently crushed. 30% of the grapes were left whole, without crushing. Finally, the must was chilled and macerated with the skins prior to fermentation, at a temperature of 5º C for 3 to 5 days.

Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at temperatures which varied between 28ºC and 30ºC for a period of 7 days. Then it was macerated with the skins for an additional 10 to 14 days. All of the wine was aged in French oak barrels for 12 months in order to improve its structure and make the tannins softer and more complex.

The Carménère variety originated in Bordeaux, France, disappeared in the nineteenth century and has now been rediscovered in Chile. This wine is made from grapes from our vineyards in the Colchagua Valley. This wine has a deep violet-red colour. Exuberant aromas of black cherries, ripe plums, wild berries and blueberries mix with spicy notes, such as black pepper, rosemary, boldo and bay laurel. On The palate is soft, concentrated and complex, with a pleasant silkiness and notes of spice and fruit, and offers a delicate yet persistent finish. This wine is an ideal accompaniment for red meat, poultry, pasta and fish. It is also excellent with typical Chilean cuisine, such as sweetcorn pie, sweetcorn parcels and meat pasties.

Deep ruby/purple. Good legs and a nose of red fruits. Full and velvety in the mouth with red fruit flavours, some oak and a little pepper on the finish.

The grapes were hand-harvested from 25-year-old vines into 500-kilo bins. They were then destemmed and gently crushed. The must was cooled and macerated with the skins prior to fermentation, at a temperature of 5º C for a period of 3 to 5 days.

Gladstone Sauvignon Blanc 2014 75cl

Gold Medal TheFiftyBest.com April 2016

Silver Medal International Wine Challenge 2015

Gladstone is a fantastic boutique winery in Wairarapa in the Martinborough region, at the bottom of North Island up in the hills to the east of Wellington. Wairarapa is very possibly the biggest success story in "boutique New Zealand" in the last ten years, as it's soil and microclimate produce outstandlingly concentrated fruit. The wineries here are mainly family affairs producing great wines with real passion and flare.

Christine and David Kernohan - both originally from bonnie Scotland - have been making wine here since 1996. Minimal intervention is the key, letting the fruit do all the talking. Although it is coupled with expert dedicated winemaking of course. They are in conversion to organic, which is straight forward for them as they have always minimised additives and intervention anyway.

This Sauvignon from their flagship "Gladstone" range is fantastic. Extensively lees aged for body, complexity and longevity. It is full of tropical fruit yet with a real mineral streak on the back palate. It is very good indeed.

Gladstone Pinot Gris 2014 75cl

This is their flagship range Pinot Gris, not to be confused with their junior "Jealous Sisters" or "12000 miles" ranges. There are quite a few reviews and awards dotted about for the Jealous Sisters 2014 but I can't find any reviews for this wine as it is much more limited. It is very good however.

Clear and bright with legs sticking to the glass. Swirl it around and a lovely nose opens up. It has a full and creamy palate with rich citrus fruit flavours and a long finish.

The wine is very well made and the free SO2 has remained free so we advise anybody with a sulphite allergy to avoid it, but we highly recommend it to any Pinot Gris fans not super sensitive to sulphur.

Benegas Don Tiburcio 2013 75cl

As you're probably aware I have been a big fan of Federico Benegas's wines for a few years now. When the first vintage (2004) of his flagship Meritage landed in the UK, I tasted it and immeduiately bought the lot. Federico was delighted and asked to meet me so we met up in Londn for a bite to eat. He has since invited me out to Argentina to help him blend a vintage! However I think he has plenty of people with more skill and experience than me to help him - I will stick to just selling it!

"Don Tiburcio" was Federico's grandfather, the godfather of wine production in Mendoza in the late 19th century, and he has fittingly named this wine from his super premium range after him.

Text from Federico's website states:

Varietal composition:

50% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% PetitVerdot, 5% Merlot.

Grapes Origin:

Malbec: Finca La Encerrada, Gualtallary, Uco Valley. Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Merlot, Petit Verdot: Finca Libertad, Upper Bank of Mendoza River, Maipu

Harvest time:

Malbec: Last week of April. Cab Franc and Cab Sauv: 2nd fortnight of April. Merlot: End of March. Petit Verdot: 2nd fortnight of March

Winemaking process:

Cold pre-fermentative maceration. Tank fermentation at 25 C . Post fermentative maceration during two weeks. Racking and natural malolactic fermentation in the oak barrels with indigenous yeasts of second use.

Ageing:

Ten months in French oak barrels of 2nd use.

Tasting notes:

Colour: intense deep red colour with ruby hues

Nose:The complexity of the varietal composition of this wine shows in the nose aromas of red and black fruit, spices like white pepper, clove and cardamom. Herbal notes of eucalyptus, thyme and rosemary. The wood ageing rents notes of cocoa and vanilla.

Mouth:A wine with great presence since the entrance. It reaches all its volume with a high impact in the middle mouth, exhibiting round tannins as the result of the five varietals. Long and lingering finish with a slight herbaceous note in the end.

Ageing capacity :

10 years

The winery was designed on a gravity feed system and all grapes are handpicked, two systems for minimising chemical intervention.

35% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot, 15% Malbec and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in Frencjh oak for 12 months and a further 12 months in bottle prior to release. It is a great wine and excellent value.

Marcelo Pelleriti Coleccion Plata Malbec 2012 75cl

Marcelo Pelleriti is one of Argentina's finest winemakers, in fact he is the only one to date to have received a 100 point rating from Robert Parker. But he isn't just an Argentine winemaker, he makes wines in Pomerol too, as the season in France is directly opposite that of Argentina. Sounds like a lot of hard work to me, jetting back and forth every six months!

This Malbec is excellent and superb value for money.

Tapiz Las Notas de Jean Claude 2012 75cl

96 Points & Best Merlot - Descorchados 2017

94 Points & Editors Choice - Wine Enthusiast

94 Points - The Wine Advocate

This is something very special!

A collaboration between Bodega Tapiz and Jean Claude Berrouet, winemaker at Chateau Petrus for 25 years (1982 -2007). Jean Claude is regarded as one of the finest winemakers the world has ever known, and a world leader with Merlot. Under his direction Chateau Petrus became one of the most expensive and sought after wines in the world.

It comes as no surprise then to find this blend is heavily dominated by Merlot. I've copied the Tapiz wine information below. I tasted it at Barrulo and was really impressed. This is a stunning wine, very silky and elegant. It was late on at the show by the time I tasted it so I didn't even attempt to make my own tasting notes by that stage, so be guided by the official ones below. But trust me, this is something very special from Argentina!

VARIETAL COMPOSITION

91% Merlot

3.5% Petit Verdot

3.0% Cabernet Sauvignon

2.5% Cabernet Franc

ORIGIN

Single Vineyard from San Pablo Estate, Uco Valley, Mendoza

VINEYARD

San Pablo Estate

ALTITUDE : 4430 feet (1350 meters) above sea level

FEATURES : Characterized by cold nights due to the proximity of the mountains and altitude, it gives wines of great intensity in color, aroma and structure, destined for premium and aged wines.

FERMENTATION PROCESS

Fermented in stainless steel tanks for approximately 12 days at 28ºC. Use of selected yeasts.

100% malolactic fermentation

TASTING NOTES

This specimen expresses the maximum intensity on the nose, finesse, elegance and harmony generated by our terroir . On the nose: notes of fresh red fruits, raspberries, cassis and truffles accompanied by delicate spicy hints. Its oak aging brings aromas of coffee and chocolate amalgamated with fruity notes typical of this varietal of San Pablo Estate . The palate is intense, with sweet and elegant tannins . A long finish , hard to forget. A wine that represents the art of precision from the vineyard to the glass.

Valtonar Crianza D.O. Ribera del Duero 2010 75cl
Valtonar is an excellent small family winery run by the father and his two sons, although one of them only works there part time. They own 30 hectares consisting of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. They farm organically but refuse to go for certification, as it is expensive and they don't believe they should have to pay to make wine properly - and I fully agree with them, as EU Organic certification rules are very lax and it's no longer a guarantee of a natural healthy wine.

They harvest everything by hand and ferment the grapes with only their natural yeasts. They don't filter the wine either, instead they move the barrels outside overnight where the drop in temperature clarifies the wine through a natural process. They make wine traditionally and use virtually no additives.

97% Tempranillo & 3% Cabernet Sauvingon, aged 14 months in French oak barrels. Here are Valtonar's tasting notes:

"This wine is made with Tempranillo vines situated around Anguix, Roa and Pedrosa de Duero, in the heart of Ribera del Duero. Dark cherry red with garnet highlights. Intense dark fruit aroma (wild blackberries, blueberry jam) with smoky and roasted (coffee) notes against a wonderfully elegant oaky backdrop. A serious wine with juicy tannins, velvety and round thanks to the perfume of oak aging (dried plums)."

My tasting notes say:

Very deep ruby, almost opaque. A nose of fruit, cream and vanilla. Lovely big black fruits on the palate. It's a big wine, full bodied and smooth with a savoury finish.
