"Since 1769 when Giovanni Follador received the Wine Quality Award from the Doge of Venice, Alvise IVº Mocenigo, the Follador family has humbly followed their passion, setting the standard for Italian wines made with great care and devotion. Gianfranco Follador, Giovanni’s descendant, has been responsible for the winery’s change in direction toward sparkling wines.

In 1970, Gianfranco FOLLADOR founded FOLLADOR Spumanti, one of the first producers of sparkling wines in the area of Valdobbiadene. With the heritage of his ancestors in mind, and the best of modern technology, Gianfranco has developed the traditional art of winemaking into a more genuine, effective and productive art form. Follador is a long established family winery producing some of Italy's best Proseccos. This "Torri di Credazzo" is their premium wine, and is very limited and only available in the UK through ourselves. Follador have a host of awards for their Proseccos, but none for this one as it is so rare they don't see the need to enter it for any competitions.

As well as having their wines in many of Italy's top hotels and restaurants, Follador are the official supplier to the Italian National Gallery and the BMW Italian Golf Open.

A delicious Chardonnay with fruit, oak and power. The grapes were sourced from three different vineyards in the Meeanee district of Hawke's Bay, noted for producing strong fruit aromas and flavours. Each parcel was vinified separately in barrel with a third of the wine also undergoing malolactic fermentation to give a richer, creamier style. The entire parcels of wine were then further barrel aged for ten months before final blending.

We took a bottle to Carlo's restaurant last night, where I decided it had to be a Welsh Black T- Bone to do this wine justice. The wine was fantastic - opulent, full of juicy fruit with a little spice from the Malbec. Full and round in the mouth with soft tannins, very smooth with a long satisfying finish. I was very impressed. Interestingly I just tasted another Merlot Malbec from Te Awa winery this morning, also made with grapes from the Gimblet Gravels area, and it was nowhere near the quality of the Mills Reef! I can see why Mills Reef has the reputation for producing New Zealand's best Bordeaux blends, it is well deserved indeed.

Mills Reef Reserve Syrah 2010 75cl

The grapes for this wine were sourced from their superb 4 hectare "Trust" vineyard which produces outstanding Syrah from very low yielding vines. The harvest was completed in one day (May 6th 2010). The grape must was cold soaked for four days to extract colour, flavour and tannin then was fermented in stainless steel and subsequently aged in American and French oak for eleven months. It's bright ruby in colour. On the palate there's plenty of ripe fruit with a little spice and noticeable oak and vanilla on the finish. It's round and very smooth but not too heavy, being more medium bodied. Good stuff.

Owned by Gerard de Villiers, with viticulturist Alberto Antonini of Tuscany having substantial input into the grape growing, and Gunter Schultz actually making the wine.

We're delighted to have got our hands on a few cases of their exceptionally limited Viognier. It's so rare there isn't even any left in South Africa. It's on a very strict allocation globally as they make so little. The grapes were hand picked and fermented with only the natural yeast. The wine has flavours of peach and apricot with full body and a lively acidity. Delicious with food.

Teillery No Added Sulphite Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 75cl
We've just retasted this wine after a few months storage in our warehouse. It's decent wine and if you have a sulphite allergy you'd be delighted to be offered a glass of this. In our opinion it isn't as good as the fabulous Solo Navitas or any of the other reds from Domain Viret, but then we prefer a more earthy natural style. This wine is a little more mainstream in style and would appeal to fans of new world reds. It also leaves you in no doubt that you've just drunk a natural, wholesome product as you find your body naturally craving more - good natural wine like this has many health benefits including actively combatting heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Please note these wines are bottled unfiltered to retain the wine's natural full flavour. There will be some sediment (completely harmless grape particles) so you may want to decant or pour carefully. The wine has a slight fizz to it when first opened from a mild secondary fermentation in bottle, which quickly dissipates when left to breathe for 10 minutes.

Please note, due to this wine's lack of sulphites combined with it's light, fruity style, it needs to be consumed within a couple of hours of opening as it will react quickly with the air. If you want a more robust sulphite free red wine which can be kept a little longer once opened, opt for one of the Domain Viret wines instead. They are bigger and heavier with more alcohol and tannins to protect them.

Julicher is a boutique winery on the Te Muna Terraces on the outskirts of Martinborough, built by Wim Julicher. They specialise in producing distinctive hand crafted wines and released their first vintage in 2002.

The 99 Rows is a blend of 5 different clones of Pinot Noir from different rows of the vineyard, all hand harvested. The wine was blended then aged in French oak (15% new) for 10 months. Pale ruby in colour. Intense strawberry flavours on the palate, medium bodied with a really long finish. This is excellent wine.

Julicher Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc 2009 75cl
Julicher is a boutique winery on the Te Muna Terraces on the outskirts of Martinborough, built by Wim Julicher. They specialise in producing distinctive hand crafted wines and released their first vintage in 2002.

This Sauvignon was hand harvested and whole bunch pressed - two techniques which reduce the need for added sulphur - then cool fermented to retain maximum freshness. It's pale in colour with a very prominent nose. Full of flavour yet light and floral with crisp acidity on the long finish. Good stuff.

This is a tiny production wine. Bernard and Petro Immelmann bought a property to run as a very small boutique hotel between Stellenbosch and Franschoek, which happened to come with 4.5 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc vines. Being avid Sauv Blanc fans anyway, they began producing this wine - which is excellent! The hotel has a spectacular setting and caters for small weddings - check out their website for some beautiful pictures. The wine itself is cool fermented, producing a crisp, fresh sauvignon with strong tropical fruit flavours. It's very good, earning a 4 star rating from Platter.

The Three Graces is the flagship wine of the estate. Predominantly Cabernet with equal amounts of Shiraz and Merlot. All three grapes were vinified separately then aged in barrel for 14 months. The wine was then blended and returned to barrel for another 8 months.

It's deep ruby in colour with a fabulous nose of black fruits. Rich and powerful with concentrated fruit flavours, supremely smooth. It's melt in the mouth gorgeous with a remarkably long finish. This is an exceptional wine.

Another fantastic boutique wine from Deumayen in the Lujan de Cuyo region of Mendoza. After fermentation one third of the grapes were aged in 1 year old French oak, another third in brand new French oak. It's very deep ruby in colour. There's great fruit on the palate with big tannins and noticeable oak. It's very well balanced and incredibly smooth. Superb wine.

A great wine from the Chalchaqui Valley in Salta in the far North. The wine is a deep purple in colour with a big nose and strong savoury flavours on the palate, perfumed with wild flowers, violets in particular. There's good fruit, a little spice and a velvety texture. It's very smooth and will continue to improve for years to come. This wine is "unoaked" letting the purity of the fruit do all the talking.

A superb Bordeaux blend from Tupungato in the Uco Valley in Mendoza. This is the flagship wine of the estate and consists of 50% Malbec, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot. The winery was designed on a gravity system to avoid the use of pumps. The grapes from the low yielding vines were hand harvested into small boxes to avoid damage then underwent a rigorous selection at the winery. The wine was subsequently aged for 14 months in new French oak. It's a full flavoured, elegant wine, very smooth with a very long finish.

A superb wine from a new winery, Bodega Cielo y Tierra, in Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza, producing a total of less than 20,000 bottles between it's three wines. The winery is a new concept from Gustavo Santaolalla, the oscar winning film composer from Brokeback Mountain amongst other notable films. He has a collection of awards including 2 oscars and 15 Grammys. His philosophy is about always striving for excellence, and he together with his wife have transferred their search for perfection into their new wine making venture. The presentation is fantastic, as you would expect from such an artistic person, in a big heavyweight bottle with a simple but beautiful label.

This wine is quite spectacular. Very deep ruby in colour with a big nose of vanilla. It's a big but elegant superbly structured wine. Black fruits intregrated with oak and sweet tannins with strong vanilla on the supremely long finish. The overall balance between fruit, alcohol, power, oak and tannin is just superb. Fantastic wine.

Tapiz have seven vineyards all at altitude between Lujan de Cuyo and the Valle de Uco in Mendoza. This is a spectacular Chardonnay, the best I have ever tasted from Argentina. Pale gold in colour with wonderful big flavours of vanilla and peaches. It's rich and full bodied from some oak ageing with superb balance and a really long finish.

Palo Domingo Yacochuya 2003 75cl
NEW WINE - just arrived

Palo Domingo is the ultimate wine from Domingo Hermanos, a family owned winery in the Cafayete region of Salta in the far north of Argentina. Salta vineyards are all at altitude, and Domingo Hermanos have three vineyards between 1700 and 2200 metres which provide optimum fruit. It's a blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat, all of which are ideally suited to the Salta growing conditions. It's a big, meaty, fruit driven wine, powerful yet very smooth with amazing length. It is quite exceptional. It's very limited, and unusally is packaged in a wooden case of just four bottles, all inside their own woven bag - as seen in the picture. The bottle itself is very impressive too - a huge heavyweight individually numbered bottle with a big dimple! There's a leather label on the front, the same as on the bag, leaving the drinker in no doubt that Domingo are extremely proud of this wine, and rightly so.

Susana Balbo Zohar Tannat 2009 75cl
New Wine

A great example of Tannat for those who may be new to the grape. It originated in the south of France where it was usually blended to make big tannic wines, hence nobody had really heard of it as a grape in it's own right. However it's ideally suited to the sunshine and altitude of Argentina where it flourishes and produces some exceptional wines. It's a strongly flavoured wine, big and powerful with chewy tannins. Have it with a steak or BBQ. If you like powerful wines it's a great buy.

This is a superb Cabernet from Susana. Ruby in colour, rich and full on the palate. There's lovely fruit flavours balanced by some oak on the finish and a great overall balance of fruit, oak, tannin and acidity. Have it with food, or enjoy on it's own.

Mendel is a boutique winery in the Lujan de Cuyo sub district of Mendoza. They produce exceptional hand crafted wines from old vines at an altitude of 1000 metres. Virtually everything is done by hand from bunch sorting the grapes, to low volume fermentation in small tanks followed by ageing in French oak. A superb wine, yet again, made from 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in French oak for 16 months. Big, powerful fruit with black cherry and plum flavours, followed by dark chocolate. It's a meaty, powerful wine but also elegant and finely structured, very smooth with great overall balance. Very long finish. This wine really benefits from breathing - or preferably decanting and leaving for an hour before drinking, as it really opens up. Have it with food ideally, preferably roast meats.

A truly remarkable wine from initial concept right through to the finished article. Sansonina was created by Carla Prospero, and Nadia Zenato - wife and daughter of the late great Sergio Zenato. They bought a 12 hectare estate in the Lugana region, famous for white wine of course, which also had some old Merlot vines. They planted new Merlot and set out to prove that two women could make a powerful, elegant wine to rival any in Italy, and possibly the world.

Naturally everything is done by hand with dedication and passion. The grapes are collected in small boxes and soft pressed to avoid extracting too much tannin. The wine is aged in small oak casks for 18 months then further bottle aged prior to release. It is a stunning wine. Ruby in colour with a rich, complex nose. On the palate it is both powerful and elegant, complex with an array of flavours of red fruits, jam, cocoa and slight mint and vanilla. Full bodied, extremely smooth, supple and elegant with a really long finish. This is a very special wine. Jane absolutely loved it!

Another stunning wine from El Porvenir. I first tasted this wine last year and have been eagerly awaiting it's arrival in the UK ever since. I'm a huge fan of all the El Porvenir wines, and the Amauta II Cabernet Merlot blend has always been both a favourite of mine and a benchmark to judge other quality Argentine wines against - although not many stood up to it. This Cab Malbec is fantastic. It's a full, powerful wine, supremely smooth with superb balance and length. 6 months in French oak. Give it a try, it is delicious!

This is the flagship wine from El Porvenir, a blend of Cabernet, Malbec, Syrah and Tannat. Only 10,000 bottles produced. I'm a huge fan of El Porvenir - they're Laborum wines are stunning, and this is even better. It's a big, powerful wine but also structured and refined. El Porvenir is the highest quality winery in the world, and that altitude lends certain characteristics to the wines which make them some of the very best in Argentina. The altitude produces wines with sweet tannins and good body with plenty of acidity which is essential for making top quality balanced wines. The soil also contains greater mineral and salt content which influences the wine's flavour. It's a superb wine, with big fruit flavours, sweet tannins, backbone and structure. It's full in the mouth and wonderfully smooth with great overall balance - new to the UK market. Fantastic wine!

This is one of Italy's greatest sparkling wines and is quite spectacular. Consisting of 75% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Bianco and 15% Pinot Nero, all vinified separately. These wines were then aged for 8 months in tank then blended together along with reserve wines from the cellar - the same process as in Champagne where different reserve vintages are back blended to achieve the required quality and style. The wine is then further bottle aged prior to release. It's pale gold in colour. On the palate there is a delightful fizz as the wine almost evaporates on the tongue, with a very fine mousse. Delicious flavours of peaches and biscuits. Supremely balanced with fantastic length. I can't praise this wine enough - it is well worth splashing out on a bottle. Presentation is fantastic too with the dumpy bottle (each bottle comes wrapped in gold celaphane).

A superb sparkling wine from one of Italy's very best producers. La Scolca wines tend to have "Italian" presentation - their reputation is so impressive the wines sell themselves so the presentation isn't so important to them! Just as well, but please don't be put off by the appearance, it's a great wine, far better than many Champagnes. Made from 100% Cortese grapes, fermented in the bottle! It's very pale in colour with a wonderful full flavour. Superbly balanced with great length and a crisp finish. La Scolca wines command a high price and rightly so as they are amongst Italy's best white wines.

A delicious Prosecco from Cantina Colli del Soligo, a co-operative of around 700 growers, in the heart of Prosecco country. It's very pale, almost clear in colour with strong fruit flavours. There's real Champagne body and depth to the wine. Lovely flavours and mouthfeel, well balanced with a long dry finish. Great wine.

This is a great Prosecco at a very affordable price. Almost clear in colour. There's an instant fizz on the tongue on first sip and the wine almost evaporates in the mouth. It's lively and full flavoured. A delightful refreshing sparkler ideal as an aperitif or just to enjoy on it's own. We've always stocked Domiziano's Frizzante Prosecco so we were delighted to discover this full Spumante one. It's a cracker. Presentation has also been upgraded a bit with silver foil around the neck and gold writing on the bottle so it looks great.

2010 vintage just arrived. John Platter 4 Stars, Wine Magazine South Africa 4 Stars for 2009.

A five way blend from Ernie Els's winery. Predominantly Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon with some Mouverdre, Grenache and Viognier. It's deep ruby in colour with strong fruit and vanilla on the nose. On the palate it's warm and slightly spicey with strong red and black fruit flavours. Very smooth, and very well balanced with smooth integrated tannins and perfect acidity. It was designed to be instantly approachable, easy drinking wine, and I think they've hit the mark perfectly. It's very very good.

John Platter 4 Stars, Veritas Silver Medal

An excellent Merlot! They blend 8 different clones of Merlot, each of which adds slightly different characteristics to this wine which also receives some oak ageing to add body and complexity. It's deep ruby in colour with a nose of red fruits. Swirl it in the glass and the big legs sticking to the side of the glass tell you this is no lightweight! Intense flavours on the palate of both red and black fruits, sweet initially but beautifully balanced by the oak kicking in at the end. Again, like all his other wines, the overall balance of this wine is fantastic with cleansing acidity refreshing the palate.The finish is very long with silky vanilla flavours. There aren't many straight Merlots that I would usually buy as I like my wines to be big and powerful, and many Merlots can be fairly light - but not in this case. It's a full flavoured, powerful wine with body, complexity and style. Great wine.

Personally for my own tastes, I believe this is their best wine. It's a six way blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all vinified separately then blended and aged in oak for 15 months. Very deep ruby in colour, again with great legs. Just reviewing my tasting notes here, I described it as "spectacular....incredibly smooth.....wonderful weight and balance....great length (dry finish)....black fruits....perfectly balanced". As you can tell I was very impressed by it!

It's very smooth and silky, again with great overall balance and a really long dry finish.
