Famiglia Cielo 1908 Appassionatamente 2015 75cl

According to their website, Famiglia Cielo was founded in 1908 when great grandpa Giovanni fell in love with a small estate overlooking the Romeo and Juliet castles in the Berici Hills in Veneto.

They produce several ranges of wines including Prosecco. This is their premium wine of which they are very proud.

Text from their website states:

"Passionately with our vine growers we have created a great venetian red, masterful blend of our territory and winemaking expertise"

Colour: Intense red with garnet

Bouquet: full and fragrant with typical hints of ripe red fruit and light spicy notes

Taste: full, large and round, with ripe red fruit notes

It's a blend of Merlot, Corvina and Sangiovese, presented in a big heavy weight bottle. It's a lovely wine and wouldn't look out of place at £20 so for £11.99 it is a bargain!

Marcelo Pelleriti Cuvee Especial 2012 75cl

Marcello Pelleriti is one of Argentina's finest winemakers, in fact he is the only one to date to have received a 100 point rating from Robert Parker. But he isn't just an Argentine winemaker, he makes wines in Pomerol too, as the season in France is directly opposite that of Argentina.

His vineyards are in the Uco Valley district of Mendoza, one of the very best areas in all Argentina. He works traditionally without pesticides, all grapes hand harvested, then bunch sorted and even sorted by individual grape. The winery works on a gravity feed system, enabling him to make wines naturally with absolute minimal intervention and manipulation.

This is a blend he produced for Gaucho Restaurants so it's composition is secret and it isn't even on his website. We've been offered some at a good price and as it's excellent wine we've bought some. In Pomerol Marcelo works mainly with Merlot and indeed at the vineyards of Chateau La Violette where he scored 100 points from Parker for the 2010, they grow only Merlot. I suspect this wine is Merlot based with some Malbec and Cabernet Franc but I don't know for sure!

It's very deep ruby in colour with a nose of black cherry and coffee. It has mid weight on the palate with soft natural acidity. It is incredibly smooth, very natural in style. Flavours of coffee, black cherry and dark chocolate with a long lingering finish.

Very rare opportunity to get some of this wine at a great price.

Undurraga Aliwen Reserva Pinot Noir 2015 75cl

Vina Undurraga is a fairly big quality winery dating back to 1885, now practicing sustainable farming. They make different tiers of wines including some single vineyard offerings. In general they tend to be good quality and fairly low in sulphites for factory produced wines. We have selected some of their Reserva and Gran Reserva wines which we feel are good value.

This Pinot Noir is from their Reserva "Aliwen" range.

Pale ruby with a cherry nose. Very soft and fruity in the mouth with light oak. It's light and silky and very enjoyable. Certainly one of the best quality to price Chilean Pinots I've discovered.

60% Lomas de Leyda Estate, Leyda Valley,40% Codigua and Santa Ana Estates, coastal area of the Maipo Valley.

After a rigorous selection process, the clusters were destemmed and the grapes were delicately crushed.

Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of between 25oC and 27oC for 5-7 days. The wine remained in contact with the grape skins for an additional 5 days after the fermentation was complete.

Aging: The malolactic fermentation took place in second- and third-use French and American oak barrels, in which the wine was aged for six months.

Undurraga Sibaris Gran Reserva Pinot Noir 2014 75cl

Vina Undurraga is a fairly big quality winery dating back to 1885, now practicing sustainable farming. They make different tiers of wines including some single vineyard offerings. In general they tend to be good quality and fairly low in sulphites for factory produced wines. We have selected some of their Reserva and Gran Reserva wines which we feel are good value.

This single vineyard Pinot Noir is from their Gran Reserva "Sibaris" range, and comes from the Leyda Valley.

Deep ruby in colour with good legs and a dusty nose. Big raspberry and cherry fruit which isn't overpowered by the oak. In fact it has fairly light body for a Gran Reserva. It's very smooth with good acidity, all components of the wine in perfect balance which is not necessarily common with Chilean Gran Reserva wines. Very good wine for the price, and my favourite of their Sibaris range.

The grapes were hand-harvested into 12-kilo bins. The clusters and individual grapes were sorted on selection tables. The grapes were then gravity-fed into the vat where the fermentation was to take place. The grapes were destemmed and gently crushed and then underwent a cold pre-fermentative maceration at 7°C for 3 to 5 days.

Fermentation: The temperature was increased to 15°C and selected yeasts were injected into the must to provoke fermentation at a temperature of between 24°C and 26°C for a period of 5 - 7 days. Punching down and smooth pump-overs were used each day to gently submerge the skins in the fermenting juice in order to extract colour and volume. Once the alcoholic fermentation was complete, a post-fermentative maceration took place for a period of between 3 and 10 days. Then the wine was matured in oak The soils are of granitic origin and contain varying amounts of clay. The vineyards are situated on gente slopes with differing levels of exposure.

The vineyard is situated just 13km in a direct line from the sea, so the climate is significantly influenced bye the Pacific Ocean. During the ripening period, the mornings are often damp and the afternoons and evenings are cool with moderate maximum temperatures. This helps ensure slow ripening, safeguarding the fruit's aromas and flavours and the resulting wines are particularly fresh.

This Carmenere is from their Gran Reserva "Sibaris" range, and comes from the Colchagua Valley.

The grapes were hand-harvested. Then they were destemmed and gently crushed. 30% of the grapes were left whole, without crushing. Finally, the must was chilled and macerated with the skins prior to fermentation, at a temperature of 5º C for 3 to 5 days.

Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at temperatures which varied between 28ºC and 30ºC for a period of 7 days. Then it was macerated with the skins for an additional 10 to 14 days. All of the wine was aged in French oak barrels for 12 months in order to improve its structure and make the tannins softer and more complex.

The Carménère variety originated in Bordeaux, France, disappeared in the nineteenth century and has now been rediscovered in Chile. This wine is made from grapes from our vineyards in the Colchagua Valley. This wine has a deep violet-red colour. Exuberant aromas of black cherries, ripe plums, wild berries and blueberries mix with spicy notes, such as black pepper, rosemary, boldo and bay laurel. On The palate is soft, concentrated and complex, with a pleasant silkiness and notes of spice and fruit, and offers a delicate yet persistent finish. This wine is an ideal accompaniment for red meat, poultry, pasta and fish. It is also excellent with typical Chilean cuisine, such as sweetcorn pie, sweetcorn parcels and meat pasties.

Gladstone Sauvignon Blanc 2014 75cl

Gold Medal TheFiftyBest.com April 2016

Silver Medal International Wine Challenge 2015

Gladstone is a fantastic boutique winery in Wairarapa in the Martinborough region, at the bottom of North Island up in the hills to the east of Wellington. Wairarapa is very possibly the biggest success story in "boutique New Zealand" in the last ten years, as it's soil and microclimate produce outstandlingly concentrated fruit. The wineries here are mainly family affairs producing great wines with real passion and flare.

Christine and David Kernohan - both originally from bonnie Scotland - have been making wine here since 1996. Minimal intervention is the key, letting the fruit do all the talking. Although it is coupled with expert dedicated winemaking of course. They are in conversion to organic, which is straight forward for them as they have always minimised additives and intervention anyway.

This Sauvignon from their flagship "Gladstone" range is fantastic. Extensively lees aged for body, complexity and longevity. It is full of tropical fruit yet with a real mineral streak on the back palate. It is very good indeed.

Gladstone Pinot Gris 2014 75cl

This is their flagship range Pinot Gris, not to be confused with their junior "Jealous Sisters" or "12000 miles" ranges. There are quite a few reviews and awards dotted about for the Jealous Sisters 2014 but I can't find any reviews for this wine as it is much more limited. It is very good however.

Clear and bright with legs sticking to the glass. Swirl it around and a lovely nose opens up. It has a full and creamy palate with rich citrus fruit flavours and a long finish.

The wine is very well made and the free SO2 has remained free so we advise anybody with a sulphite allergy to avoid it, but we highly recommend it to any Pinot Gris fans not super sensitive to sulphur.

Benegas Don Tiburcio 2013 75cl

As you're probably aware I have been a big fan of Federico Benegas's wines for a few years now. When the first vintage (2004) of his flagship Meritage landed in the UK, I tasted it and immeduiately bought the lot. Federico was delighted and asked to meet me so we met up in Londn for a bite to eat. He has since invited me out to Argentina to help him blend a vintage! However I think he has plenty of people with more skill and experience than me to help him - I will stick to just selling it!

"Don Tiburcio" was Federico's grandfather, the godfather of wine production in Mendoza in the late 19th century, and he has fittingly named this wine from his super premium range after him.

Text from Federico's website states:

Varietal composition:

50% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% PetitVerdot, 5% Merlot.

Grapes Origin:

Malbec: Finca La Encerrada, Gualtallary, Uco Valley. Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Merlot, Petit Verdot: Finca Libertad, Upper Bank of Mendoza River, Maipu

Harvest time:

Malbec: Last week of April. Cab Franc and Cab Sauv: 2nd fortnight of April. Merlot: End of March. Petit Verdot: 2nd fortnight of March

Winemaking process:

Cold pre-fermentative maceration. Tank fermentation at 25 C . Post fermentative maceration during two weeks. Racking and natural malolactic fermentation in the oak barrels with indigenous yeasts of second use.

Ageing:

Ten months in French oak barrels of 2nd use.

Tasting notes:

Colour: intense deep red colour with ruby hues

Nose:The complexity of the varietal composition of this wine shows in the nose aromas of red and black fruit, spices like white pepper, clove and cardamom. Herbal notes of eucalyptus, thyme and rosemary. The wood ageing rents notes of cocoa and vanilla.

Mouth:A wine with great presence since the entrance. It reaches all its volume with a high impact in the middle mouth, exhibiting round tannins as the result of the five varietals. Long and lingering finish with a slight herbaceous note in the end.

Ageing capacity :

10 years

Tapiz Las Notas de Jean Claude 2012 75cl

96 Points & Best Merlot - Descorchados 2017

94 Points & Editors Choice - Wine Enthusiast

94 Points - The Wine Advocate

This is something very special!

A collaboration between Bodega Tapiz and Jean Claude Berrouet, winemaker at Chateau Petrus for 25 years (1982 -2007). Jean Claude is regarded as one of the finest winemakers the world has ever known, and a world leader with Merlot. Under his direction Chateau Petrus became one of the most expensive and sought after wines in the world.

It comes as no surprise then to find this blend is heavily dominated by Merlot. I've copied the Tapiz wine information below. I tasted it at Barrulo and was really impressed. This is a stunning wine, very silky and elegant. It was late on at the show by the time I tasted it so I didn't even attempt to make my own tasting notes by that stage, so be guided by the official ones below. But trust me, this is something very special from Argentina!

VARIETAL COMPOSITION

91% Merlot

3.5% Petit Verdot

3.0% Cabernet Sauvignon

2.5% Cabernet Franc

ORIGIN

Single Vineyard from San Pablo Estate, Uco Valley, Mendoza

VINEYARD

San Pablo Estate

ALTITUDE : 4430 feet (1350 meters) above sea level

FERMENTATION PROCESS

Fermented in stainless steel tanks for approximately 12 days at 28ºC. Use of selected yeasts.

100% malolactic fermentation

TASTING NOTES

This specimen expresses the maximum intensity on the nose, finesse, elegance and harmony generated by our terroir . On the nose: notes of fresh red fruits, raspberries, cassis and truffles accompanied by delicate spicy hints. Its oak aging brings aromas of coffee and chocolate amalgamated with fruity notes typical of this varietal of San Pablo Estate . The palate is intense, with sweet and elegant tannins . A long finish , hard to forget. A wine that represents the art of precision from the vineyard to the glass.

Valtonar Crianza D.O. Ribera del Duero 2010 75cl
Valtonar is an excellent small family winery run by the father and his two sons, although one of them only works there part time. They own 30 hectares consisting of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. They farm organically but refuse to go for certification, as it is expensive and they don't believe they should have to pay to make wine properly - and I fully agree with them, as EU Organic certification rules are very lax and it's no longer a guarantee of a natural healthy wine.

They harvest everything by hand and ferment the grapes with only their natural yeasts. They don't filter the wine either, instead they move the barrels outside overnight where the drop in temperature clarifies the wine through a natural process. They make wine traditionally and use virtually no additives.

97% Tempranillo & 3% Cabernet Sauvingon, aged 14 months in French oak barrels. Here are Valtonar's tasting notes:

"This wine is made with Tempranillo vines situated around Anguix, Roa and Pedrosa de Duero, in the heart of Ribera del Duero. Dark cherry red with garnet highlights. Intense dark fruit aroma (wild blackberries, blueberry jam) with smoky and roasted (coffee) notes against a wonderfully elegant oaky backdrop. A serious wine with juicy tannins, velvety and round thanks to the perfume of oak aging (dried plums)."

My tasting notes say:

Very deep ruby, almost opaque. A nose of fruit, cream and vanilla. Lovely big black fruits on the palate. It's a big wine, full bodied and smooth with a savoury finish.
