R H Phillips Chardonnay 2002 75cl

13.5% abv. Part barrel fermented for body and toasty flavour, the remainder fermented in stainless steel to retain freshness and flavour. This is a delicious wine, bigger and heavier than most Chardonnays. Very full in the mouth, with long lingering flavours, enhanced by the oak but not overpowered by it. If you enjoy a strongly flavoured Chardonnay this wine is a delight. Great presentation too.

Zevenwacht Tin Mine Red Stellenbosch 2004 75cl

IWSC Silver Medal. 14% abv. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Primitivo. Zevenwacht, owned and run by Denise & Harold Johnson, is an independent estate of 500 hectares with 200 hectares under vine, mostly noble varieties. Their winemaker, Jacques Viljoen, takes a bold approach to winemaking, using modern technology as well as traditional cellaring techniques to produce elegant premium wines. I spoke to him at length in London recently where he enthused about his wines - and so did I. They were fantastic. We'll shortly be taking on a range of his varietals, as they were so good.

This wine is delicious, powerful fruit, with good tannic structure, full bodied, smooth and lingering. We thoroughly enjoyed it on it's own, but this would be a good food wine too. It's refreshing to see a winemaker, in a country dominated by varietals, blending grapes to produce a wine of such elegance and quality. Highly recommended.

Pendarves Estate Hunter Valley Verdhelo 2004 75cl

13.5% abv. A relatively small estate of 20 hectares under vine, owned and operated by Dr Phillip Norrie who is well known for his research into the relationship between wine and health. The estate produces several varietals but it is Verdhelo and Shiraz for which they are best known and regularly win trophies at the Hunter Valley Small Winemakers Show. Verdhelo has pride of place, occupying the best sites in the vineyard. This wine is deceptively pale in colour with wonderful big fruit flavours, and great length. It's probably the best Verdhelo I've ever tasted and makes a great alternative to Chardonnay. Due to it's full body, it's well suited to food, even strongly flavoured like Chinese or Thai dishes, or delicious to while away a sunny afternoon on it's own.

Hacienda Del Rey Merlot 2005 75cl

13% abv. A very aromatic nose gives way to soft ripe fruit on the palate. The tannins are balanced beautifully by the fruit to produce a delicious easy drinking Merlot. While this wine goes well with food, it's even better savoured on it's own. A step up in quality from the Camino. Highly recommended at this price.

Sollione Negroamaro IGT Salento 2006 75cl

13% abv. From the 'heel' of Italy. The hot weather combined with modern techniques is transforming the once 'too hot' Southern Italy into a premier wine producing region. This is a soft and fruity, easy drinking red with vanilla flavours produced from the local grape Negroamaro. Great value and delicious to drink on it's own or equally good with food.

Gougenheim Malbec 2006 75cl

Winner 'Best with Beef Award' & Decanter Silver Medal. 13.5%abv. The Gougenheim winery is located in the foothills of the Andes mountains, where the 'terroir' of the vineyards is slightly cooler, producing plenty of ripe fruit characters whilst retaining acidity in the grapes. This wine has soft rich fruit upfront and strong vanilla flavours with nicely balanced tannins. It's delicious and can be drunk straight away without needing to breathe. We were very pleasantly suprised at just how good this wine is.

Patricio Gouguenheim took the time to explain to me how he keeps his production costs to a minimum, producing top quality wines at a very affordable price. Recent tastings of his latest wines have encouraged us to take on more of his range as they are so good. They'll be arriving shortly. In the meantime both this Malbec and their Cab Sauv are highly recommended.

Vina Encineda Valle Mayor Rioja DO Cosecha 2004 75cl

13% abv. The small bodega of Valle Mayor call this wine a 'semi Crianza'. It's a beautiful wine from Rioja Alta made predominantly for the Spanish market. The wood aging has mellowed the fruit flavours to create a delicious , soft wine with vanilla and oak on the finish. It's one of the best Riojas I've tasted. Great presentation and individual bottle numbers. A great bottle of wine.

Solane Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso DOC Santi 2005 75cl

Decanter Bronze Medal. 13.5%abv. I love this wine. A great Ripasso, plenty of fruit supremely balanced with the tannins and alcohol. Very smooth and very drinkable. Ideal with food or delicious just to savour on it's own. Not as big as the Zenato but equally delicious in a slightly lighter style. With Italian wines increasing in price this wine is excellent value for money. Recommended.

Forrest Estate Marlborough Pinot Noir 2004 75cl

14% abv. A stunning example of Marlborough Pinot Noir at it's best. The Marlborough region has a long slow ripening season, due to more sunshine hours than anywhere else in New Zealand. It also receives about the same amount of heat in a season as Burgundy, but this is spread over a longer period of time so each day is a little cooler. This is great for retaining acidity in the grapes while bringing them to full ripeness. Forrest Estate is a family owned winery with the emphasis on quality rather than quantity. Don't be put off by the price thinking it's too cheap to be good, this is a fabulous wine.

Valpolicella Superiore 'Ripassa' Zenato 2005 75cl

13.5% abv. Most producers from Veneto make a Ripassa., but this one from Zenato is widely regarded as the best. The Valpolicella is passed over the Amarone pomace, which creates a secondary reaction resulting in an increase in colour, flavour and alcohol. The result is a full flavoured, beautifully smooth, lingering wine, better than many co operative produced Amarones. I personally love this wine, as do the wine magazines in both Italy and the UK. I've kept the price as low as possible as I believe everyone should try this fantastic wine! Previous vintages have been awarded 'Due Biccheri' 2001, Winespectator 89 points 1999, 88 points 2000/1, Decanter panel tasting 4/5 2003.
